Just started a high era campaign as the Papacy. Figured it would be cool, not to worry about heirs and kings and stuff.

Anyway I kept thinking to myself that maybe since its the Papacy I should have started in Early.

Which in your opinion is the best era to start in? the Papacy only have 2 provinces all 3 era's this is why I ask.

~Thanks~

The Pope will need all the help and time he can get. In the Early era you will satrt with a castle and can make some decent units. The surrounding factions wil not have a significant fleet built up and will have fewer troop options. Later on they will and their nave will keep all of your provences in danger AND you will not have a technology advantage. So High will be MUCH more difficult and Late will not give you enough time, even IF you could get off the ground. Also keep in mind that you cannot crusade, you do not get price/generals, or princesses to help forge alliances.

I actually like playing as the pope, I find it a good challange.

cant crusade? the Pope of all people cant crusade? Sure there is a way to make that option available to them in the startpos or crusader files.

You have to mod it. The Papacy can't build Chapter Houses, and thus no Crusades. After that you need to enable the order knights to the Papacy, I gave him all four (which makes his Crusades very powerful), but that might not be much fun when you play him.

Pro:

-The papacy is very challanging

-The papacy cannot be eliminated from not having any heirs

-The papacy cannot be excommunicated

-The papacy will tend to have an easier time killing other catholics b/c their enemies will be excommed.

-The papacy begins the game with a castle

-The papacy is close to 3 wealthy provences: Venice, Naples, and Sicily

Con:

-They cannot crusade

-They have no princesses to help seal alliances and raise general's loyalty

-They have no general/princes

-They have no unique units

-They start with only 1 or 2 provences

-They start with very low influence and it is hard to build up

-The traits recieved by new popes tend to be more random (I think)

- Their neighbors have ships in the begining (not too many) but enough to raid your undefended provences

-They begin the game with practically no income

-If you enable the Pope to build crusades he becomes a warmonger with colonies everywhere and is very hard to get rid of.

Go into the game files and change the papacy from a "minor" to a "major" faction. Its very easy.

you have to make them playable.

u didnt know? u can make every faction in the game playable.

open ur mtw folder and go into the campmap folder.

open startpos.

you should see some files titled early/high/late

u can open one scroll about half way down and fine a list of all the factions. it should look like this. (this is in early)

//========================================
//Active Factions
//which factions are to appear in the game
//and which of these factions are playable
//========================================
SetActiveFaction:: FN_ALMOHAD FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_BYZANTINE FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_EGYPTIAN FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_ENGLISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_FRENCH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_GERMAN_HRE FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_ITALIAN FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_POLISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_SPANISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_TURKISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_DANISH FT_MAJOR

SetActiveFaction:: FN_ARAGONESE FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_HUNGARIAN FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_SICILIAN FT_MAJOR

SetActiveFaction:: FN_NOVGOROD FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_PAPIST FT_MAJOR

Notice how all mine say major. some of urs such as the papacy will say minor. to make them playable simple put in major

u will only activate them however for the given era u opened. say u make papy playable in the early era. u cant play as them in high or late unless u do the same in those files.
