They show up in Khazar and Georgia in 1231.
The Khan will always be in Khazar if you want to kill him right off with assassins.
If there are units in Georgia, a bunch of warriors will show up, however, if Georgia is held by the rebels, then they will become loyal to the Horde, but additional warriors will not show up. This means about 3000+ men less to fight.
I'm beggining to hate the Horde, since I am TRYING to play the Turks in the High period. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-help.gif
man, its better if you dont notice the horde trust me, i had that as turks on high, boy did i get a wakeup call.
kawligia, in my game horde invaded georgia with 10x armies than i did. i let the have georgia and they procedded to armenia, the thing is i left armenia with only 3 units of armenian heavy cav :) the horde only attacked with 4 kataps and 2 horse, i then counter attacked with a bigger army and they retreated, i then put the 4 armenian cav back and then the horde did the exact same time, we did that for a couple of turns till the horde got exhausted then i procceded to mop things up.

I don't think it;s guarenteen to be georgie. The bulk of ther army will arrive in khazar, and if you have time the best way of beating them is to station a large force in Kiev, then they will be attacking over a river. They've shwn up in georgie a couple of times for me, but also in edessa and armeni once or twice.
Having a large fortress in khazar and trying to get them to siege it (The horde usually sieges rather than waits it out). Both these battles will weaken the horde considerably, and they ALWAYS have no heirs when they arrive, meaning you can make them rebels in one fell swoop of an assassins blade (though I prefer to kill him in battle, arbalests ae best for this).
Be VERY wary of auto resolving battles with the horde, though you may not have 5 hours spare to beat them back over the river when they attack with 10,000 troops the auto resolve will lose you that battle, and also with other battles it will take them prisoner and almost always ransom them back automatically. When it;s 5,000 troops you really don't want to have to kill them again, especially if you end up ransoming the khan back.
I think you don't need Khazar. It's also imprudent if you are allied with the russians.
You can always defend Georgia more than easily with 1000-1500 troops (comprising arbalests) and the mongols will transform the main part of Russia into a heartland of rebels, whom you can take easily or just bribe them.
If I'm correct the Golden Horde can also arrive in Volga- Bulgaria and Armenia (I think this one too) aswell.

Yep, I've seen them in both of those provinces. The first time they appeared in Armenia was a real shock to the system, especially as I was still recovering from a civil war two years earlier.
I've been trying to decide whether the combination of start provinces for the horde is completely random or not. When I've been playing as the Turks, they've always appeared in Georgia and sometimes Armenia too as well as Khazar. When I've controlled the Steppes, but nothing in Asia Minor they've generally appeared in Khazar and Volga-Bulgaria, but not Georgia or Armenia. I can't decide whether the horde intentionally appear in position to attack provinces I hold, or whether I'm just being paranoid about the whole thing.
If we'd get historical, we should have a mongol column in Siria, bashing Damascus. CA probably considered it too threatening.
Some say a tip about not to build armor upgrade building in Khazar otherwise the Horde will get that armor upgrade
In VI, the Mongols will also build ships, so you might want to think twice about building a shipyard in Khazar, Georgia, or Crimea.
You can promote the possibility of loyalist or peasant revolt in Khazar by destroying the Border Fort as soon as the GH appears, and build a church and leave priests and spies there after your army retreats or is besieged.
You should fight hard defensive battles against the GH even if you eventually have to retreat or withdraw. You can get a good kill ratio using arbalesters and pavise crossbowmen protected by high morale spearmen (with armor and large shields). That way you can gradually wear down their huge armies. The object in these battles is to allow your missile units to expend all their arrows on the Mongols, then withdraw when they are out of ammunition.
Game Over!!!

I say build the armor upgrade in khazar. For when you kill the Khan with an assassin and all his forces go rebel...you can buy them really cheap and have MHC and MHA with an armor upgrade, not to mention any of those bow holdin' warriors. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

Part of my strategy tackling the Horde a few hours ago involved buying their generals and having them fight each other.
First condition is a strong economy based on trade, because their generals have next to maximum loyalty, which will cost you 65-70,000 per general.
They will often have multiple armies in their provinces. Buy one of them, let him fight others, lose (not before killing at least a few hundred of his compatriots), refuse the ransom. If he wins, don't back up the province; the Horde will instantly attempt to take it back. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Fill up Khazar with clerics. If you're playing a Catholic faction, crusades will help you get rid of them easily. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif In theory, the same is valid for jihadd but I've never done any. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-embarassed.gif
They will have ships, yes, but no more than a couple.
