The Battle of Chicken Run
=========================
Chicken Run refers to the alley in Chikuzen through which many an attacker is forced to flee through. Chikuzen is predominantly flat, but dominated by an imposing hill in the far right corner: Mount Chicken.
THE SIDES
The attacking forces were a motley union of clan armies, lead by LinkSlice, ElmarkOFear and Shogun So. The defenders were largely unknown.
Since I cannot recall the defenders' names, I will refer to them by their colors -- Blue, Green and Red.
THE CAUSE
Elmark, Shogun and Slice had set about to have a nice picnic, with plenty of sake and chicken legs to feast on. But, knowing that Chikuzen was famous for their chickens, they set about to obtain some poultry from this notorious province for their little get-together.
But, the reigning powers in Chikuzen mistook their intentions for an invasion, and immediately captured and killed Elmark's envoys to the village to collect chickens. This enfuriated the 3 amigos, who now combined their forces to teach the hapless rulers of Chikuzen a lesson in provincial affairs.
This would prove to be a day long remembered by the dwellers of Chikuzen...
DEPLOYMENT
Slice started out in the left-flank, while Elmark had the center and Shogun had the right. Red was deployed on the imposing right hill, while green was at the foot of the hill red was on, and blue was opposite Slice on the far left.
Slice told his allies that he expected all 3 defenders to climb onto the hill and await our attack.
THE FORCES
Slice's forces included only 2 musketeers and 3 cav archers. But, his lack of missile power allowed him to field an impressive monk and nodachi force, which included 5 monks and 2 nodachis. The remainder of Slice's force was yari cav and yari samurai.
The defenders fielded muskets and arquebuses with typical sohei and nodachi backing.
THE BATTLE
Upon the start of the battle, Slice immediately sent his entire army charging towards blue, who as expected, immediately set about a forced march to join red and green on the hill. Elmark's forces followed closely behind Slice's through the center.
Slice's cav archers were allowed to proceed quickly to engage the retreating blue's forces. As blue marched toward the center hills enroute to the ominous right hill, Slice's cav archers rained death on his marching sohei, who suffered high casualties along the march.
Meanwhile, Shogun approached red's front and launched a frontal assault. Greens force was marching up to engage Shogun's flank, thus endangering his position. If green could hit Shogun's flank or rear, the defenders would quickly eliminate one of the 3 attacking armies. To prevent this, Elmark abandoned the flanking manuever Slice was leading and turned on green's forces at the foothills of Mount Chicken. Between them, Shogun and Elmark managed to precipitate a mass rout of green's forces.
Seeing green on the run, blue decided it had better sacrifice some men to ensure that their forces reached Mount Chicken in sufficient strength to offer a defense. To do that, blue positioned all but one of their musketeers and archers on the small ridge opposite Mount Chicken to attempt to cover their retreat up the hill. This decision was based in part to the fact that blue discovered -- a tad too late at that -- that Slice's entire army had marched to within yari distance to the edges of his retreating formations, and that his formations had their rears exposed to Slice's army.
Slice waited for the bulk of blue's forces to cross the valley and start up the slopes of Mount Chicken before launching his assault on the force they left behind. Blue's muskets and archers ran like whipped dogs at the mere sight of Slice's yari cav; the 4 monks and nodachis he sent to support the yari cav merely had to clean up, and in short order, almost completely annihilated blue's routing forces.
Slice then regrouped his men behind the small hill in front of the imposing Mount Chicken to protect them from the musketeer volleys coming from blue's remaining musket unit atop the mountain. He marched his own musketeers, one of which was badly depleted now, to engage blue's lone gunner unit. They would trade fire for some time, but Slice's larger numbers were slowly whittling blue's musketeer numbers down.
Meanwhile, Elmark and Shogun had both been routed while attempting to break red's lines. But, red was hesitant to pursue their forces because of the threat that Slice's static army posed. Red feared a counter-attack by Slice while he gave pursuit woulg guarantee Slice the crest of Mount Chicken. As a result, Shogun and Elmark were able to rally their forces each time they were routed. Their combined forces rallied about half a dozen times; each time, they regrouped and launched another frontal assault on red's lines. Shogun's and Elmark's forces were approaching exhaustion. Seeing this, Slice reorganized his front by moving some of his monks and nodachis out to the center to possibly assist Elmark and Shogun against red. He also moved his yari unit that had taken the most damage to support them.
At this point, blue's musketeer unit broke and ran like whipped dogs. This left the left-most slopes of Mount Chicken without any defender missle units to cover. Slice seized the opportunity and launched an all-out attack with all his monks and nodachis -- including those from the center -- on the forces of blue. Slice's main assault came from the hill opposite the left slopes of Mount Chicken, with Sohei and nodachi in the lead and yari sam in support. The monks and nodachi in the center were vectored in at an angle towards the tree grove that separated blue's forces from those of red. This route would provide some cover to Slice's center force from the guns of red. Lastly, Slice sent the damaged yari sam out towards the center slopes, in a feign towards a hapless flank attack on red, should he decide to assist blue.
Fortunately, Elmark still had a nominal force left, and pushed one last attack onto red's forces. Red did not come to blue's assistance right away as a result -- and the thought that Slice's center force would invariably turn on him at some point during their march.
Slice's forces reached the crest of Mount Chicken unopposed, where they clashed with blue's bewildered forces. The center forces reached the tree grove unopposed as well. Soon, blue found that his monks were losing badly to Slice's monks. Part of this was due to the fact that blue's Sohei had been decimated earlier by Slice's cav archers. Blue launched a surprise attack with a yari cav he had kept in the far left of the map, but they were destroyed by Slice's rear yari sam and Slice's general -- another yari sam unit; blue's yari cav was sandwiched between 2 of Slice's yari units and cut to pieces within earshot of blue's resilient forces on the crest of Mount Chicken. Slice's fresh troops were no match for blue, who soon caved in after seeing their last hope die with their approaching yari cav. Red even attempted to hit Slice's flank by advancing his best units into the tree grove to attempt to save blue from total annihilation. But alas, they too were sent into flight.
As blue's forces routed through Slice's lines, they were cut to pieces. Barely a man escaped from the blue's forces. Slice then siezed the peak of Mount Chicken as his forces dispatched the last of the blue army. He regrouped his men, who were now looking down onto red's lines. Then, Slice launched an attack downhill into the rear of red's lines, who were exhausted from Shogun's and Elmark's repeated attack. The mere sight of Slice's fresh and impetuous Sohei charging downhill at them from the commanding heights of Mount Chicken was all that was needed to precipitate a mass rout of red's remaining forces.
EPILOGUE
Victory had been acheived, and the defenders were forced to flee along the infamous alleys of Chicken Run for a change. Slice's forces suffered fairly low casualties -- only 400 or so. But, Slice racked up almost 800 kills over the course of the battle, a feat matched by both Elmark and Shogun.
After the battle, the victorious forces collected all the chickens they could eat and set about having their picnic. The finest geishas in the province were ordered to serve and please them; Slice would take 250 geishas with him to populate his harem in the lands of Chain, and another 500 for his fellow Chain generals.
Elmark and Shogun reveled in the Slice's awesome charge that lead to complete victory. Slice on the other hand, reveled in the resilience of their forces in keeping red in check despite so many routs.
The chicken and sake tasted all the better atop Mount Chicken. The counting of heads would last another two weaks!
