HELP I just got walloped while invading Valencia. I brought in over 16 units via several stacks, and the computer randomly (?) picked 16 units to start the battle. I couldn't substitute any starters, before the battle began (I guess b'c I was attacking? I've done pre-battle swaps while defending before...) nor could I figure out how to make any mid-battle replacements

I'm sure it can be done. Can some one please give me a step by step on how its done? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-help.gif

Hi,

the AI selects yout best units and your general as starting troops - you can swap them using an icon on top of your screen but you have to do that before pressing begin battle - there you can see the order in which replacements will come in. Unfortunately it is hard to get the order as you like it as there is no function to set an order.

For midbattle replacements: you can only have 16 units on screen, so you have to withdraw or rout one (or get one killed) to get the replacement button active. As soon as you see an empty slot in the bottom right you can bring another unit in.

hope that helped

What version are you playing? With VI it is easy to select your starting army and order of replacment, but pre VI is a different story.

This feature alone is well worth the upgrade in my opinion.

Espeically when you enter a battle with over 50 units.

Thanks all - I'm playing pre- (non- ??) VI; kinda figured I'd play the game abit before getting yet more game options. But if it helps with this, then I'll get it

As my troops got whupped, I'd already given up on solving the reserves problem. Now I'll try to bring them on as units die/withdraw.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Welcome aboard Obadiah.

In plain old MTW, you can change which 16 start the battle. In the deployment screen along with the usual buttons is a button with some men on it and a curved arrow - this is a swap button. I can't remember if the button is on the top or bottom of the screen.

If there is a unit in your starting 16 that you want to replace, simply left-click on that unit then click on the swap button. The unit is replaced by the first unit in the reinforcements queue. Keep clicking this button and it will cycle through all the reinforcements. Continue through this until you get the unit you want. Then you can move on to the next unit to replace. This is a bit of a pain compared to VI, but it works. If you really have the patience, you can use this method to control the order of the reinforcement...but I doubt it is worth the effort.

No, from what I remember (and I am playing the older version now) you can't control what comes on for reinforcements. You can choose to have a unit leave the battlefield (before it is available to command), but then you lose that unit for that battle. If you really are hoping to get another unit (not that peasant unit the computer wants to give you)then you might risk passing up a unit. Sometimes depends on the situation. If you have a lot of units that were killed or routed, any unit out quick is sometimes better than nothing

But certainly, checking your units before the battle starts is essential. The computer likes to give you the highest valor troops, but these may not be full units or the right combination of troops that you think you need.
