When i play i dont hardly ever use crusades, however i was watching my girlfriend playing as the spanish the other day. She had trained up a crusade thingy in castille and selected the target province as antioch. so she moves it into cordoba, ok so far. then she ends turn and next year she cant move the crusade at all, it ends up just staying in cordoba untill they all die or whatever, can someone pleae help and tell me why this is?

the movements will correspond with regular army movements like adjacent land and ports and ships and trading roots and blockaded oceans...things like that

crusades are odd anyway...oh i've done strange stuff working with crusades and jihads...they can sometimes just be odd...

there is an overland route from cordoba to antioch

I think crusades are worth the 1000 gold pluss fee to pope. You get a large amount of units when it starts and can get more from others on the way, thus allowing you to attack the factions who you took units from more easily.

Are yopu sure it can;t move toa province by sea? Crusades follow strange rules reguardding sea movement, including using nuetral boats sometimes. Pick it up and scroll over the entire map looking for highlighted provinces. I once had a crusade go from flanders to livonia. Not the most logical step as it would have been quicker and easier to go through german lands sucking up troops.

I like the way medmod changes crusades. You get more men but they cost 4000. More accurate and it stops the AI from launching crusade after crusade after crusade.

I also like to remove the port or ships from that provence so I can march through other countries and steal their troops. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Thanks sociopsychoactive, we didnt think to scroll around the whole map. i allways thought it was supposed to take the most direct route, i think i read that in the manual somewhere? i`ll tell me missus to look around a bit more. thanks

it can go by the closer sea route or the closer land route.

this allows you to go back and forth between two provinces sometimes as one is closer by land and the other is closer by sea.

once they allow you to pass thorough their lands, you can use their ports and ships

fun to play english and sent troops through HRE lands sucking up troops and then hitching a ride on the italian navy. works nicely when it works. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

sorry to burst your bubble but the polish cannot crusade as they can't build a chapterhouse.
however, with a little modding, it's doable http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
just check the BUILD_PROD_13.txt in your MTW root directory with gnome editor and find the row with chapterhouse and check for the faction availability column and add FN_POLISH to the list and you'll be fine. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif
you may want to give the polish crusader knights but for the sponge effect that is unnecessary.

and, just to make sure the most obvious solution was tried, you actually have to move the Crusade stack by hand each turn, just like any other army stack: province to ajoining province. It won't automatically move to the target province year after year.

lol, im not that stupid servius but thanks. and thanks katank for that handy tip, i might give it a go.

honestly, when I first started using Crusades, I thought they would automatically move themselves across the map. I thought of them as guided missiles, constantly building up low-quality girth by sucking up crappy units from the provinces they moved through, and would eventually land in the target province, hopefully winning through shear force of numbers.

Oh how wrong I was, not least of which in their ability to win their objective without me having to send a secondary organized army stack in on the last move.

yes, that was the way I thought too when first using crusades. When my first overland crusades failed, I learned to use sea crusades along with supplementary armies.

onyl later did I learn about sponge effect by moving through very selective provinces that are super high zeal, loading them up with mercs, and cheesy tactics like shufflling back and forth between high zeal provinces year after year using the movement bug to get tons of units. having 12k men in a crusade does mean that you can win through the strength of numbers stupid egyptian horde runs away at the sight of that massive beast lol

still my pet peeve with crusades is that AIs can launch multiple crusades and I can't. with jihads, it's perfect how I can sent a coupla of em and get my sultan to max influence.

shouldn't I be able to send multiple crusades? that should be allowed since it's more expensive, right? I paid for da right but noooo, I can't. meh. a dozen crusades with kick ass knights landing simultaneously in the holy land would be a sight though.

Wes did have the right idea with his mod in making it a major undertaking, I'm thinking of modding that in.
