I was getting bored of the relatively easy Catholic games and decided to play as the Turks during High.
All was going well - took Egypt and Constantinople. Then the clock ticked 1230 and whoooooaaa - 10,000 Golden Horde in Khazar, Georgia and Armenia each. Abandoned Gorgia and Armenia straight away, but even with camel and cavalry army units to combat the Golden Hordes Horse and Warrior units I could not defeat all of them.
This is as well as defending numerous crusades to Egypt and Constantinople by the French, English, Spanish and Germans
Ive have tried to play again and was more successful, but only when the Golden Horde JUST invaded Khazar - was able to hold them and the crusades off.
How are you supposed to win when there are 10,000 troops in 3 different regions (10 stacks in each)?????? As well as fighting off the crusades??? I had 3000 troops in Egypt, 3000 in Constantinople and 2000 in Georgia - and that was after defeating Egyptians and Byzantianes.....
Has anyone had this as well??
if you aren't ready to war with them, have an emissary ask for an alliance with the khan. He always accepts. Then disband or retreat all units out of the province the year they appear and raze everything to the ground. This way, you aren't at war with them.
I pulled this off as the russians and got an extra ten year to prepare to eceive them in kiev. this works wonders and frequently they just sit in khazar. As well, see if you can get them to fight the egyptians if you don't wipe them out

A great deal of the horde's army comprises of trebuchets and naphtas, which means you got less units to worry about. Also when they arrive they usually have all trebuchets in one stack, all MHA in one stack etc etc.. So its better to hit them when they come, before organizing their forces. As for crusades, ally with Byzantines and send your imams/alims which has some effect in decreasing the zeal. Probably crusades passing through Constantinople will lose some men on the way alreay.

I'm trying the same thing on high as the Russians, but that ends up a lot easier because of all the bridge crossings. On their first turn, they invaded Kiev, and after fighting to the last Halbardier and losing, I still killed the Khan (he led the fourth charge across the bridge) and that was the end of the mongol invasion.

Thanks for all the advice.
The trying to make peace idea does sound good - may give me enough time to try and take Spain whilst the Golden Horde moves through Eastern Europe
In my campaign as Russian (early start) ,Wes Mod, GA ,invaded me only in Khaazar -15k men, battle lasted 7 hours I was ready for it.
But it wasn't difficult ,(maybe at the end...)but boring.
It lasted so many time-because (BUG?) all had armours from master armourer (I have master armourer there).
I won the battle. But Italians start knoking to my doors in Georgia - 15 k men too.
But it is difference story http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif .

If you wait for them at Khazar, things may not be interesting
Try start at HIGH and you may think twice about where to waiting for them, Khazar or Kiev

The horde counts as a rebellion in terms of how it comes about on the strat map.
As most people know, rebellions tend to vary depending on the size of yours or others troops in the province. If you leave nothing there, the rebellion will probably consist of one or two units, if you have a full 960 men there you will get around 2-3 thousand troops.
So, if you have 3000 of your troops in each province they appeared in (where they appear is slightly random, almost always khazar, often georgia) then you are going to get a bigger horde than before. Try having just the governers the year the horde comes along, and it will be much smaller, but not half as much fun.

I don't think this is entirely true. I've seen massed troops of 40,000 waiting out the horde only to have the GH apear with 12,000. Then other times i've seen almost no units waiting on them and they appear with nearly 20,000.
In my experiences the Numbers of the GH are random.
