I know this has been discussed before, but bear with me. The other day, I decided to be generous (and pump up my king's influence http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif while at it) and help out my allies the french whose starving garrison was being besieged by drunken spaniards in Granada...

Upon the arrival of my king's army, the spaniards fled to Marocco. The french sent their gratitude AND... a hefty bill for my army's traveling expenses including my king's luxury gondola ride back to Barcelona...

Well, previously it has been argued here that a probable cause of such an unjust turn of events is lack of port (or destruction of it) in the target province or interrupted sea routes. In this case, the port in Granada was INTACT and mine was the only fleet in the waters between Granada and Aragon...

it seems, this really is a bug...

p.s. i was still allied with the french after i paid their bill.

p.s.s. two turns down the road, it happened again. this time my armies were rescuing a french garrison in sinai. in this particular case, not my whole army was captured by my allies but just a lone lancer unit, which came from a different province than the main army. again, the sea routes were uninterrupted and the port was intact in Sinai...

happens to me most of the time

usually im either italian/sicilian.
the byz get defeated all the way to constantinople by the egyptians. the egyptians lay siege to constantinople and i "help" my ally the byz, instead of saying thankyou they instead RANSOM my goddamn king and his army, WTF. needless to say i attacked em next turn and got constantinople myself.

probably a bug.

edit: i seriously do not think helping allies with sieges raises ANY influence, i did that 5 fuckin times and my kings influence didnt raise 1 bit.

helped my king's influence though. I swaer I did nothing else that could have boosted it in a few years and it went up a point i think from lifting two sieges.

lifting allies' sieges by sea is a bad idea. I never lift their sieges except by land so I don't have to pay any ransom.

BTW, this is totally a bug. I especially hate it when I newly bribe a province but it's invaded by my allies with a bigger stack the same turn and we are "fighting" the nonexistent rebels there and alliance wins the day only to have my units captured and ransomed, those that I just bribed It's like having to pay for em twice WTF http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

Hmnm, I don't get this - I have certaibnly done naval relifs like this, and I don't recall having to ransom my men back - what happened is that they all re-appeared in the province from which they embarked.

Is it possible another faction, allied to a foe of yours, moved into a sea thus breaking up one or all of the return routes? That kind of thing might explain why only one unit had to be ransomed in one case above.

No, that's the problem: there were no other naval powers in the waters... :)

I took care of them a bit earlier in the game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

If there WAS a hostile naval power that would explain the issue...

happened to me too, twice, as England, relieving the Italians in Leon. After the second time, which was a test to see if I was up too late or not, I just let them take care of themselves.

This didn't happen before I got VI though I don't think, though I may be wrong. I do know that pre-VI I used to be able to raise sieges by naval connections WITHOUT getting that stupid bill.
