View Full Version : Crusade Size
Is there anything other than zeal that influences how many troops a new crusade will start with? In my current campain as the Spanish/high, my first crusade was great...2 KS, 2 OFS, and 2-3 fanatics. Next crusade 1 KS, 4 fanatics. Next crusade 5 fanatics. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
What can I do to ensure I am getting more of my +1 valor knights of Santiago and OFS in my new crusades?
well, zeal of province, and possibly piety of your King may have something to do with it... it does seem random, though
Thanks,
I haven't done that much crusading so I was just wondering will they get better again, or just continue to get worse? Is their anything I can do to influence this? Does my kings piety matter?
Also, to the happy buildings effect the new crusade units giving them better moral?

King's piety does seem to matter a great deal in my experience, at least in terms of maxing your "good" units like KS and OFS (though in the desert they both suffer a lot...don't send from provinces with armor bonus). 4 Piety seems to be a minimum to getting a crusade that's worth your while in terms of OFS and Order Knights content, no guarantee about fanatics (they are affected by Zeal more I believe). Every successful crusade boosts your king's piety by 1, so if you start him from an early age and take your GA crusade provinces (you should even if you're not playing GA, they're rich as hell) using your normal armies plopped into a crusade, soon your crusades will generate whole armies of their own.
yeah all upgrades such as morale, weapons and armor in originating province apply to the starting units in the crusade.
if you raise the zeal of the province and also get higher piety high/governor should give you more good units like knights.
Also, try a different province. sometimes crusades from the same province in a row tend to produce more fanatics and less high tech troops.
maybe the province only have so much to offer.
I make very sparing use of inquisitors to raise zeal but not serious inquisitions which would be disastorous.
also, using 0* inquisitors on your king or governor sometimes improves his piety as long as you don't actually fry him.

Hey I made a horse unit avaliable to the papacy for crusades will I now be able to train them later or like the fanatics no?
check under the build requirements. this is column 17 IIRC in gnome editor.
Thanks Everyone.
I launched a couple of crusades beefed up with my own troops, and raised my kings piety a couple of points. After that my next two crusades gave me, 2 ofs and fanatics, then 1 KS and 1 OFS. Not great, but much better than just fanatics.
I'm launching so many crusades because I am playing the game under self imposed restrictions similar to those in the French and Italian PBM posts. I think those rules are great ane really make the game more fun and realistic to a certain degree. The Pope keeps calling for crusades against the Turks, who keep shrinking by the way, and the Almo's attacked me so I sent a punative crusade against them. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif
