I know it's frustrating but calm down and tell us exactly what orders they're disobeying?
OT: you're a Miami fan? did you come from Florida or the Miami area or are you just a Yankee that went to Uni there?

dont call me a yankee please :) I HATE the ny yankees with a bruning passion lol I know what u mean when u say it though.
My men are fighting and i tell them to stop, i click away from the battle and they dont leave, they start to but keep fighting, i even tried having them attack others units they just dont listen sometimes.
I'm actually a senior at high school, going to college at CCSU. Anyway I became a Miami Dolphin fan in the Dan MArino age. He never had any running but I love watching him play. Now I'm a big Dolphin fan. The Hurricanes followed becasue when I found out there was a college Miami team I watched em and I love their running style and smash mouth D
People in tight formations do that. Once I was panked by a lousy army of sarahan cavalry, just because one of my saracen infantry row decided to hold cavalry at bay not with their spears but by their butts. Whole army routed because of those idiots. Needless to say the Divine Sultan Caliph (that being me) ordered him to Rum and immediately got the head of that general. Next year I went there with 1500 troops.

try slecting "hold position" (not hold formation) then clicking where you want them to go
i find this encourages them to disengage or alternatively select ctrl-W to order a withdrawl

U might also wonna check if the units in question are impetuous or not , if they are they will ignore orders to retreat.
I think retreating from combat when your already engaged is bad, a unit that retreats from such a situation will have more casualties and will rout 9 out of 10 situations especially when facing heavy cavalry and the like.
Instead let the unit do its job , let it inflict at least some damage and let it hold the enemy in place.U will eventually loose the unit but at least the enemy wont break through your lines to cause havoc to your other troops.

Sometimes units don't respond immediately, so you may need to reissue commands (if you're playing solo, pausing and checking on the status of troops is a good idea periodically). As posted earlier, impetuous troops (often knights) may refuse to disengage or if troops are tired, they may be unable to flee and be better off fighting to the death if need be (to gain time or in to trim down the enemy's unit).

I find that all infantry are really hard to disengage; hard to turn your back to someone who wants to kill you I guess. Cavalry sometimes just won't; they're "impetuous, they're getting slaughtered and they just can't get enough of a good thing I suppose http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif Occasinally results in a "brave beyond belief" v&v.
My pet peeve is suicide skirmishers. Mounted Crossbow seem to be the worst for this; gottem on skirmish, got plenty of room, and they charge to melee within 4secs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-no.gif The only thing out there to save them are more Mounted Crossbow...itching to join the melee http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-party2.gif
Oh well, its a game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

yes, with some units, pulling back after commiting can be bad aswell
I you want to disengage with infantry, you almost always have to have another unit engaging the same enemy. If no one is available to hold the enemy while your troops are moving, they will continue to go back to fighting to avoid being stabed in the back while running off.

Think of a sports stadium full of people, where everybody shouts. Do you think that the players will hear your voice? In the heat of the battle, where everyone shouts and all the attention is directed how to survive and win, the general’s orders might not be heard and obeyed.

then dont move at all u know, they start to and when they end up staying it just messes me up more. lol
To pull out of a fight you have to be persistent.
If trying to pull out cavalry, you will often see that the leader and most of the guys fall back, but a few men stay (they are stuck). If you leave the unit as it is, then it will reengage, it will come to the aid of those last few men. You have to keep ordering the unit away until it has gone rather far from the guys or they have broken free/gotten killed.
Infantry needs someone to help them, and normally from the same side. Meaning a unit of FMAA need someone to engage the enemy where they are fighting the enemy as well. Then you can pull them back, just be careful as the same problem can arise and a few guys gets stuck.
I like this as it shows how hard it really could be to disengage a fight.
I have this problem with Cav a lot too. I order them to disengage so that I can reflank and they can't. If I persist in trying to disengage them they will get slaughtered while trying to so I have learned to just let them kill what they can and move on to the next issue.
