ok the Unit guide lists them as swords and the Cafe24 tool has them as spears. What exactly are they? Do they get a rank bonus and formation bonus or should I leave them on engage at will?

they do get rank bonus. You should treat them as pumped up peasants. I would heavily recommend against using them to eat a cav charge as they have pathetic morale and would break.

in anything frontal, they die like flies, rank bonus or no rank bonus.

use them to flank or rear and I would just use their fairly good charge to do dish out the damage in probly wedge formation. Thus, engage is usually what I use.

They are NOT spears and don't get rank bonus. Checked the the raw txt file with gnome editor. Slav warriors are pictured with spears, but for the game engine they have swords. kinda like how gallowglasses are shown with two-handed swords, yet are treated as axes (with armor piercing) within the game engine.

edit: and they get no supporting ranks, as well as no attack/defend bonus vs cav, which is a spear unit bonus.

edit2: i agree that they're pumped up peasants. when i can build them, i use them in place of peasant garrisons, especially near border provs since in a pinch they can fight better than peasants.

They actually do pretty well when chasing archers, since they are fast and carry a huge shield. Plus they're cheap

I *think* that they get very minimal anti-cav bonus, cause they use short spears, but I'm not sure.

There are only four anti-cav bonuses. They are for spears, camels, halberds, and pikes. Slav Warriors do not get any of these bonuses.

True, but there are other things that do very well against cavalry anyway, javlins for example. Even chivilric knigts and the like will fall en mass to a volley of javlins, meaning slaz javlinmen have their place aswell.

Slav warriors make good governers, they may holds the line or fare well againt vanilla spears, but not much more than that. Even so, for a basically 'peasent' unit to do well against spears is a great achievement, and the 100 size unti means they hold for alot longer than UM.

actually you should never depend on them. They just serve as good garrison troops in having same numbers and upkeep as peasants. they would be slightly better in battle.

don't use them frontally at all unless against maybe peasants. do a frontal attack against a professional force then be ready for a good laugh.
