I seem to remember that it adds 1/2 point to attack per for every point of armor the unit has above 3 if it's a cav. And +1/2 point for every point of armor above 4 if it's an infantry unit.

I'm not 100% sure though.

dont worry about Aelwyn and how he does it. Back at the castle, he class's and keeps every post by date, topic, who started it, by dept number... it's quite sickening actually... but it's stronger than he is... so we just let him be.. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

From FBE's guide:

Quote[/b] ]Appendix 4: Armour piercing formula
Again this section is with help from Kraxis.

The formula for working out the armour piercing bonus against a specific target is as follows:
(target armour - 1)/2 = bonus added to attack.

That means that AP gives a bonus of +1 to attack at enemy armour of 3-4, +2 at 5-6 and so on. Upgraded armour is affected by this, effectively making added armour only half again as effective as it was supposed to. Cavalry armour affected by AP starts at 4 due to the horse/camel itself being a point of armour and still a soft squishy thing.
So really while AP units are more effective against heavily armoured units it doesn't mean they will do poorly against unarmoured units, they just don't get the bonus.

The bradybooks stratguide says shields aren't included for calculating a target's armor.

edit: the AP formula stated in the FBE's guide is the formulat good since 1.1 MTW. If you're playing unpatched 1.0 it's (target armour - 3)/2. And the bonus is rounded down to the nearest integer.

Against infantry:

Armour: attackbonus
1-2: +0
3-4: +1
5-6: +2

Against cavalry

1-3: +0
4-5: +1
6-7: +2
8-9: +3

Shield does not count for armour for armourpiercing weapons.
