View Full Version : While waiting for Rome
First allow me to share some of my gaming experience. I started playing computer games back in 85 or so, on a ZX Spectrum 48k.
Back then i became a fan of the work of a certain RT Smith.
He did war-games, namely WWII war games like Arnhem, Desert Rats and Vulcan.
Then he started a project called Encyclopedia of War. The First Chapter was named Ancient Battles. There was never a second chapter. His games are still among my favorites ever.
18 years later i'm reading through the credits of M:TW and what do i read? RT Smith is on the team. I even wrote CA and asked if he was the same, and yes he was.
I was very happy to realize he was still involved in my favorite games.
Ancient Battles is a very ambitious rendition of ancient warfare. You can pick any army from Ancient Egypt to Late Roman Empire, and pitch them on the battlefield. There is no campaign, if my memory serves me well, but you can stage tactical battles at your leisure. Units and names seem very historically accurate, so if you want to learn about things you are going to use in R:TW this would be a nice place to look.
You can find RT Smith works (including a DOS version of EW: Ancient wars) in abandon-ware sites like www.the-underdogs.org.
Wow sounds great I can't say I am of the same era but will definately try some of his games http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Hello Britannico. Welcome to the Entrance Hall. I do believe you have the distinction of being the first person I've ever meet who has been to Zambia...eh, not that this is a honour worthy of putting on a job application. Afterall, Was first person Gregoshi met who has been to Zambia would look rather silly on a resume.
In case you haven't figured it out yet, these lame attempts at humour are what I do while waiting for RTW. And I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say I'm hoping for an early release... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I'm waiting for it too
I love the romans, and study roman history.
I've studied there military tecnics and evolution till the end.
RTW seems really good, and I do hope that it would be historicly real to play.
Just to get an idea I would love to see the fear tecnic used by the romans: the ones that the german anti-protest police use (silence while hitting with the gladium the scudum all together, like a drum, and marcing heavly all together), not to talk about epic battles with over 10 000 soldiers.
Well, these are my dreams :)
Hehe. There are who dream a harem of women, and who dream of living in the roman times as a Tribunum and advancing with his mighty army.
^___^
Sutdy roman history?? Darn I have probobly lost my position in the org and totalrome.com forums as the Roman History Guy
As for the ancient battle game by RT it is a bit wierd I still dont quite understand other than that is going to b bloddy annoying clicking on each soldier to move them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I'm actually finishing Compiuter Science in Italy. :)
But as a hobby I collect books and study Roman history and tecnics.
I started this hobby when I was 12, and now I'm nearly 23 ^_^
As for the battles I hope that we can still command formations.
The nice thing about the roman army was that the macro organization was the same as the micro one.
10000 soldiers moved the same way as ten, with the same tatic, and inside the group of ten we could find a group of five, with the same tatics.
They where so dam cool.
Sigh...*sob*
its a pitty that they are no more, even thow some historicans, looking at the history from 'the outside', say that the modern europe is nothing else that the continue of the roman empire.
Sorry if it feels awkward Scipio, i haven't tried it recently.
I forgot to mention it was a purely turn based game, so it plays a bit like chess, something our real-time brains seem to have forgotten http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif
