OK, I'm after some info on the Communist Party in Italy. I know that they've always been a significant "minor" party, if you know what I mean, to the extent that in the 40s & 50s the CIA made sure they didn't win any elections.

Did this continue throughout the cold war?

Did Russia/China ever get involved with them?

Are they still a factor today?

Please, this is a request for information, not a vehicle for US/USSR, CIA/KGB bashing, who was right & wrong etc. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-argue.gif So please try to keep it civil. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Facts not opinions people

Thanks

This information is classified. You will note the black helicopters within the next ten minutes. Do not attempt to flee, several members of your immediate family are already in protective custody.

Yes, but mainly through the local secret services and political-industrial complex, including the all-powerfull Italian Masons. Heavy funding of the rest of the parties (and especially the Christianodemocrats and the so-called Socialist) high-level collaboration between all the non-communist parties etc. blocked the way of the communists to power. Later, they tried to defame the communists by linking them to the terrorist organizations like Brigade Rossa and others.

China, no, never AFAIK. Italain C.P. had very early on dismissed it's ties with Moscow and gained independency and pursued a "special route" towards socialism. Moscow tried to profit off them (politically) but never controlled them.

As a "socialist" party nowadays their power is not any more significant.

You can find loads of data about those facts if you google a bit. You speak Italian?

Then google the name "Enrico Berlinguer" (I am not 100% sure for the spelling) and see what comes up. He is the incarnation of the history of the Italian communists in the 60s, 70s and 80s. The man who has stood up in the meeting of the CPs in Moscow and openly said the USSR that they were straying from the ways of the Revolution, and the man who invented the "Euro-communism" concept.

In Sicily, when Salvatore Guiliano was around, they used to kill communists. Just some trivia there.
