View Full Version : Newbie question on modding names

I've purchased the battle collection last January, and the last two months I've enjoyed playing the byzantines (although I haven't stepped up to another level then easy yet).
Recently I've downloaded a very apprehensive guide on Adding new factions (I believe it was Duke John's Guide?), which helped me modding the forenames and surnames used by the different factions to my own flavour (found a url linking to a website with medieval greek names somewhere on this forum, so I decided to change the latinized byzantine names into greek names).
So I've also changed the names of the popes (I found the original names used by the game a bit too restrictive), but I noticed that the game uses these royal pope names (such as Bonifatius, Gregorius and so on) also for the Papist generals and agents.
I know that this is not really a major problem, but I'd like to restrict the names specified as royal to name the popes only, and not his generals and agents.
Anyone knows how I can do so?

(btw, noticed that the game linked the royal Sicilian names to the Scots forenames list, which gave me Sicilian kings such as Arcill I and Aed II rather than Roger, William and Tancred. Anyone changed this too?)

PS. MTW really IS awesome (I can't believe that I didn't buy this game earlier) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-blush.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-blush.gif

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Welcome to the Org Tricky Lady. Welcome to the ever growing MTW-is-a-great-game club. Don't worry about playing on easy, everyone plays the game to their own level of challenge and enjoyment. I'm sure you will continue to get better and move up the difficulty scale in time. I (and a multitude of others) highly recommend Lady froggy's A Beginners Guide to Total War (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=9203) to help you improve your game.

As for the name thingy, I'm not a modder so I won't pretend to be able to help you with that. I'm sure someone else will though.

yeah, the beginners guide to total war is really very good... I spent some time putting all the text in a PDF file and added some small screen shots of the units. Helped me visualise everything a bit more. Is anyone interested in this... maybe I can host this PDF file somewhere on the net?
anyway, i am not calling myself a modder. Doing that would be a bad insult for all the real modders out there http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

do you have VI? the information is in the heroes file. Also, the restriction to the royal names is done through the numbers next to the lists that indicate how many names there are in total and how many are restricted to the royals.

ie. the first number IIRC indicates the number from the start of the list that are royal and hence can't be generals names.

you may notice some overlap of names since these can be either generals or royals' names.

the lordz, the makers of NTW, made a heroes or names editor untility which is very handy and useful and can help you avoid some of the mess of DIY

good luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif and welcome to the forums http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

tnx for the welcome...
yeah, I have VI.

Indeed, I checked the Default_Heroes.txt (or whatever that file's named), and changed some stuff here and there. In the guide I downloaded there was this small explanation that the first forenames are royal (and that part works fine in my new game; now I have popes Victor and Byzantine emperors named Isaac http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif ) but it seems that the game also uses the first 'royal' names as general names (so they don't seem to be unique). It's a pity, but it's not important anyway...

Something rather strange that I happened to find in my new campaign: there are now Sicilian and English generals whose name is Stephen (Could not translate) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif Wicked times, wicked names...

Guess I should stop messing up my files http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Gotta find out what I did wrong

back to reading the txt files

if you browse the list, you will see second instances of royal names and those are to show that they can also be for generals.

I think that is the case for say Richard in the English game so you could have prince Richards but also random Richards that are generals.

if you changed the second instance to Bob, then you no longer get general Richards, only prince Richards.

have you checked the Lordz tool? it's really good.

BTW, you should always backup your files before you mod (advice that I sometimes don't follow myself only to realize I messed up the game, DOH http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-blush.gif )

mmmm... can't seem to find the hero tool... (maybe I should check a bit more carefully?). Anyway, I cannot download the file from the 3Ddownloads server: it downloads 200 kb and then Download accelerator says download complete whilst the file is (of course) incomplete. Well...

I checked the txt files again (loc/eng/names) and over there the name stephen was apparently not defined. I guess that's the reason why I got these silly names.
So in fact, the problems are solved (fchouw) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

Concerning the princes' forenames that are defined as general's forenames: I checked it, but for the Papist faction the prince forenames are not repeated in the general list. That's something I still find quite strange. But anyway, it's not important. At least I got rid of these generals called Stephen (Could not translate). That's already something http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif And the game still runs fine.

thnx for the help http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif
