One of the reasons why most of Rage gave up comp many moons ago... myself and the great RageExecutioner lost 9 points after one battle.....and we won....4 from me and 5 from him.

It must be said though that you are more likely to get a better battle in a friendly.... people are more willing to express themselves both tactically and army wise.

The comp is also another way for players to exploit a paticular system they use.... and in truth does not require great skill after 50 battles on the same map with the same koku and set up in the same position.

The only true way to measure who is actually a 'great' or the 'greatest' player is to-

Play at least 50 different maps/different terrain
Play with varied armies
Play with differing koku
attack and defend
Win more of those then anybody else

The only players who actually do this are people who play alot of 'friendly' games.

Not taking away anything from certain high scoring guys (because it does take alot of game to get there) but for example (and no offence intended, just an example)....Lord Ted is the master of the low koku..... and his chosen maps..and paticular koku level.

For about 2 months Rage only ever attacked and we picked the hardest maps we could find... Fear would also do the same..... Magyar and Kocmoc would also take battle to any map with varied koku/terrain etc....you will find alot of the vets doing this...because I can say without doubt....that myself and RageExecutioner won 50 games defending Totomi without loss (apart from drops) and became bored... I am sure those who were here remember the Danes.... one maps-big hill-same set up, all = system.

so if and when I am back from my 'castle' move...... a challenge will be set... I will ask who I beleive to be the best players and ask for people to challenge them .. make offers of different types of games.... and we will se who can actually command an army or who is an 'arcade' gamer that has mastered a system.

Basic idea-

I will pick certain honoured players- 2v2 teams, 1v1 players, friendly players and comp fighters.

maybe 5 2v2 teams who are considered good and 10 single players.

If they take the challenge they will be challenged by anybody who has the nerve to take them on.

I will take e-mail challenges on their behalf...I will also pick 10 maps and randomly issue koku from 5000 to 1000 for those battles....the teams will also have to change their armies to certain degree each battle (without messing up their basic style).

Only known names will be able to enter.... the people who take the challenge will be able to enter and fight the other guys who are taking part.

all games will be set on friendly.

So each of the chosen will play atack and defend on 10 maps (of differing terrain) so in all 20 battles...using different koku and armies.

The battle results will be recorded and so will the kills.....not sure yet but maybe-
5 points for mountain attack win
4 points for hill attack win
3 points for attack win (flat)
3 points for defence win (flat)
2 point for hill defence win
1 point for mountain defence win

1 extra point for every 100 kills you get over the enemy (win or lose, so those masive mountains are not a waste of time).

You will have to change your army.

Limit to 4 max
I will also work on a rule so each type of unit is use (apart from ninja).

lots of work......

So if you are chosen.....will you take the challenge....because I will post your name in every forum....and if you dont take the challenge (without good reason) all will know your just a one dimensional, system using, no skill.....points monkey!

Well Monsta, unfortunately this post came 2 years late... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif Good idea that should have replaced the honour system

I have already proved myself many times in comp games, I don't need that "number", but on MI many think that if you don't have the "number" you're not good, so they seek any way to get that "number".

Anyway, I can hardly play my MI tourney games, so I'll stay out of any competition for now.

I like the idea Monsta.. Willing to play both the 1 vs 1 and the 2 vs 2. I am a better player with a team, but I might do okay 1 vs 1.

YEs Tera, you have proved yourself over and over again. Your men have been following mine off the map for many months now, I believe you have garnered a place in Shogun history right next to mine! LOL :P I love playing 2v2! That way I have someone to blame when we lose!! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Good idea Monsta.

ok heres some names I would consider..nothing is final and I am sure there are a few others who will qualify..with your help I will be able to add or remove some....lol.....maybe its time I visit the top 100 listings.

Kocmoc
Amp
Lord Ted
MagyarKhan
Satake
RageDevil
Paolai
DRBninja
Elite--- (all round good players)
Global--- (seem to be gaining those points)
Sp00n
San
Takiyama (Mizu)---

will update more with research...no doubt a few people will be named twice because they have used other 'nicks' while collecting honour points...some will be named who you wont see in the top 100...because they are 'good' players but stay with the friendlies. If you know of anybody worthy let me know...we may even have to make it a voting issue if the numbers grow to high....this 'challenge' will not conflict with any of the other noble 'tourneys'.

I know I've harped on about it before but without a satisfactory answer. The Golden Axe ladder seems the perfect system to replace the honour rubbish. The score you were awarded was relative to whether you attacked or defended and the level of opponent. You chose to challenge anyone in the ladder by official means.
It never seemed to take off which is a shame.
Anyway, it's a good idea Mr Monsta. Have fun with it.

I only play about 4 games a month these days but would be happy to challenge anyone for a laugh. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

when i was playing railroad tycoon II we had a fellow on there that devised a web page with a ladder system for the game, as the game had no ranking system whatsoever. how we did it was somewhat an honor system and somewhat a cross-verification system. you'd play your game then go to the web page and post your results, adding in all the players in the game and who came in first, second, third and so on. then, you'd come back to the chat and let the others from the game know that it had been posted. they then went and posted a verification of your post. it was all done in asp or cgi, i forget, but it was quite slick and kept track quite nicely of the wins and losses and standings. there was a rating to the system and you moved up or down the ladder accordingly. i forget all of the details of the thing, but i do remember that we got quite religious about posting our games on that site.

something like that could be done with shogun, albeit a bit differently, but the overall principle is sound. it might even be able to be done with something from the log files which would semi-verify the results.

obviously this breaks down if you've got a lot of false reports, but the thing that made it work was the fact that everyone in the game had to verify the results before the post would count in the standings. in the case of drops or disputed results there was a panel of 3, i think it was, who would arbitrate these things.

if a person refused to verify the various games he was in he was booted off the ladder and no one would play with him any more.

the web site would auto-update the results posted for that day each day at midnight. this was done to give folks a chance to post verifications in the odd chance they had had to leave or got knocked offline or some other thing like that.

all in all, this system worked out very nicely. rrt2 was a fairly small community, like this one, and we tended to know everyone that played. idiots, cheaters, spammers and jokers just wouldnt get games unless they straightened out. thus, it wasnt just a ranking system, it was also something of an honor/ethics/justice system almost as an aside. something akin to the Amish who use a shunning/ostracizing system to handle folks that cause trouble. it worked rather well.

I would nominate Rath...he liked comp games...was #1 once...so I bet he'll do good there. I am sure NinjaKilla can make it in as well.

I've played comp once but now I do no more...and personally I got exams coming up...so thanks for keeping me out. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Honor system sucks. I mean u need to win many games to get that honor and then a drop or a foul up by an ally or some bad fortune can cost you all that.
I would simply go for win number and looses and ladder goes to one with more wins and less losses. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Simple not so accurate BUT no honor invlolved.
I mean l sometimes play players with very high honor to find out they don't deserve that amount of honor and times when l play a player just a bit 100 honor and he kicks ass.

Don't use only honour, use theforce, too.

sounds like a good idea http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
not to say that it needs it, but you could also have another catigory. select some of the newer players in the field, and team them with the vets, so as to test there addaptability with inexperienced players. this would also involve the newer players, and may help to lead them away from the honor hunting ways, there by increaseing the fun for all.
at any rate...just a thought. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
