Due to my lady friend who did some overzealous housekeeping, I lost the MI manual and had a question about running...

If Cntrl-R makes the unit run does hitting it again make the unit shift back into low gear ? It may be the lag of bigger games thats messing me up, but lately I cant get my units to run when i need them to, and useing the double-click method only gets me in trouble.

No MajorDump hitting again won't make them walk (remain running). I always have problem making my unit runs. I have no problem in SP but in MP, sometimes its the lag (units run like after 3-4 sec of hitting ctrl+r), but sometimes they didnt even respond. double-click works fine though. Whats wrong with your double-click?

Whats wrong with double click is i'm a moron and quite famous for:

1)DBL CLK just in front of the enemy and then having my unit stop and get torn to pieces while I'm managing other untis
2)DBL CLK behind the enemy and having a unit bolt past all the action and become useless for me or, my personal favorite, to actually break thru a hole in the enemy line and keep going http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Major,

I'm also having considerable difficulty getting units to march quickly in online battles. It seems to work at times, and not at other times. Lag is definitly a factor, but I will often have a unit start marching quickly, and then drop back to marching on it's own on flat maps, and the unit is not exhausted. There is something funky going on with the run command.

In a laggy situation I've gone to holding CTRL-R down for several seconds before releasing it. I've also redifined CTRL-R to be a single key which saves time hunting for the keys because you have to give that command so often now to overcome the problem. When lag is bad, it's hard to get the double click to work.

Regarding infantry tactics, it's fine to advance a line as a group, but, as your line closes with the enemy, go down the line and give individual attack commands to get the benefit of whatever charge bonus your units have. Of course, you have to hold off on attacking with units that have an opportunity for flank or rear attack until they are in position. Right now I do a lot of double checking of units to make sure the run or attack order worked, and reissue it if it looks like it didn't.

this didnt show up as a problem until 1.02. i'm thinking that since they fixed the fatigue thing in 1.02 that it also affected the run command. since we know that units were messed up before as to run-walk-charge speeds, i'm thinking that their fix is tied into that and that something else wasnt spotted until after the patch was released. it's fairly common in coding to 'fix' one thing and then to have something else related get messed up. i think that's what's happened here. we just didnt catch it in time to ask CA to fix that part also.

AAAAARRRRRRRRG

It waa only a 1v1 game....I deploy far back as attacker and decide to move in slowly on a soft flank and then rush, my only missle are h1 guns i keep in the rear....I get in position, I go, I hit Cntrl-r and they run for about 2 seconds, then they start marching again. I repeat. They repeat. Mind u the whole time im getting picked to shreds by muskets. I lose a good 25 percenmt of my men by the time they break the line and I have a damn good encompassing attack, but i rout because i simply got shot to shreds on the way there. I'm not saying I would have definitely won had my men run properly, but I had high honor Dachi, Monks, Yari and a super ashi with cav on the flanks and the opponenet had 4 guns and three archers. my melee troops were far superior.

Same sh*t happen in single player games as well. Sometimes the units just enjoy the "walk-in-the-park" thing just too much.

I gave up using CTRL+R a long time ago - long love the double click!

P.S.

In STW when you pressed ctrl+r the units marched very quickly, now they don't even march quickly LOL! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/confused.gif

Even double clicking on the ground has problems with marching instead of marching quickly. It's mostly a problem when moving many units at once, but I don't think it's grouping that is the culprit. It happens even if the units are not grouped. Commanding individual units to march quickly seems to work better, and double clicking on an enemy unit seems to work most of the time. It's strange because you can get the double arrows on the unit icon, but the unit may still only be walking. At least I think it's walking because that's what the text reports when you put the cursor over the unit.

Terrain may also be a factor. Maybe they just CAN'T run on whatever ground they happened to occupy when you looked. I dunno. That's what I'd always assumed. =X

Well I just played a 3v3 on Ise, and I had no problem getting my grouped units to march quickly even up the hills. So, I don't know what's going on. Sometimes it works for me, and sometimes doesn't.

Could it possibly have anything to do with the units getting bunched up, such as three units overlapping each other once they start to run so they slow down again?
