View Full Version : The Compass
Well after a fairly long gap, i started playing some total war again, and just had the compass arive in my campagne
now i waited a while to see if anything new would appear (only done one previous early campagne and didnt really bother much with sea) and 10 years later nothing new
now, been looking at the unit stats, and everything that has a requirement for compass, is either Late or High, nothing in early, the compass event occurs about 35 years before the end of the early period, so surely this means the compass doesnt actually do anything? its a pointless requisite/event ?
IIRC, when the campaign enters the High Era then you will be able to build better ships - if you upgrade shipwright to dockyard - like Caravels instead of Barques.

what i meant was that anything that has a requisite for the compass is only available in the high period, so you cant build them until after the compass event anyway (due to the high period requisite)
so it seems to me that the compass event is utterly pointless ?

I m not sure about this but my guess is that it afflicts the muslim nations (or one of them) as they can build deep sea vessels in early and maybe only after the compass event.
just my 2 cents correct me if I m wrong http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Best I can tell, the only ship that requires shipyard 2 that is buildable in early is the bagalla, which is muslim only. Well, pagan too but the horde isn't around for the early period anyway.
the point of having the event in early is that you can build the buildings first and then be able to build those units as soon as high roll around.
same is true for guns. 1260 event occurs so that you can build the buildings which for organ guns and stuff will take you to around the start of the late era anyhow and thus the era restriction isn't much and the event occurring before the era is still useful.

the only buildings that i can find dependent on the compass are the shipbuilders guild and master shipbuilder, both require gunpowder which is after the compass event, so again the compass has no effect on their availability
the only ships that require the compass are :-
Boom (Late only, requires gunpowder)
Carrack (Late only, requires gunpowder)
Cog (Late only, requires gunpowder)
Gun Galley (Late only, requires gunpowder)
War Galley (High and Late, requires gunpowder)
Nothing else requires the compass
so to say it again, it seems like the compass event itself is utterly pointless, it doesnt give anything to any faction, so is just a pointless feature ?
