whats there furthest you've got a green non-hero general upto?
taking a 0-command unit and taking them to the top, getting him some good v's and keeping him away from bad v's?
if you havent ever rly done this, you should try it, its fun. It feels like this unit has some personal attachment to you, not because he is a king or a prince, or even a super general. Also when he gets to the high ranks you can say he's earnt it.
I've got a good one goin now. A berserker on Viking map (vikings) from a 0 to 3 with risk and skilled attacker.
have fun

I actually roleplay my generals all the time. Until I can build Ghulam Body Guards, or equivalent unit, to use for a decent starting unit I fight with my king.
When GBG become available I select one with good v&v´s and start training my new general. Usally I´ll marry one of my daughters to him. Appoint a title or several that raises his values as a commander and use him in every offensive move I make.
In my current game my shield-brother Lord Gunnbjorn is a 9 star, expert defender, expert attacker, brave beyond belief and has a fairly high dread (which I don´t want to go higher since it will affect him negatively). This is the highest rating I´ve ever reached in any game. I don´t know how many battles you have to fight to get this high but I´ve been playing this game every day for 6-8 hrs since last friday and I´m only 90 years into the game. I decided to roleplay my Viking faction and limit them to settle in little land per king and do a extreme amount of raiding.
During my first king I just conquered Manau, Domon and the Orcades. My secon king just raided. My third king took all of Ireland. My fourth king (current) have taken Scotland down to Cyil and Fib and Lord Gunnbjorn is about to embarque on a devastating raid on the powerful Mercians and Saxons with his 5-7 valour jomsviking army, he he

hola there, welcome
yeah, any type of victory gathering and hits and misses will dole out and mold through good generals, and then well u can just keep using them and keep making more,
the only time this will not happen naturally is when u are losing badly

One thing I really miss from shoggy is the win/loss ratio statistic that was accessible for each general. Sometimes all you needed was another victory or two, and voila, you got a 4-star general. But in MTW I can't be bothered to track my generals, as I have no idea how far away they are from promotion.

From command 0 to command 9, took some 15-20 yrs, mostly was fighting crap rebells tho.

Hmmm, It was a Jannisarry Heavy Infantry unit, that went upto about 7 command, if I remember right. I managed to increase his rating because of necessity. He had to hold off French invasions about 3 times his size several times with a small army ( I was unable to send relief forces). He had Blood Lover but also Expert Defender and some others.

What i usually do is sending a 3-star general to train him on the pope, and then raid the pope´s provinces...Its quite worth it.

I always try to distribute titles among my best generals frist (Though its sometimes necessary to give a title to anyone so the place doesn't rebel). To the really good generals I give my daughters - The greatest gift a king can give
PS I live in the place that's called Manau in the game - Actually called the Isle of Man. Man, I want to conquer my own island so bad I'll give the general who gets it my best-looking princess http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
with title of constantinople and constables, that's +4 stars right there and it's quite doable to get a 0* to a 5* by battles alone, ie not die of old age before that happens.
@axeknight. BTW, that's cool. you actually live on that island? If I did, I would want to conquer it badly too. It's a nice province wiht good income and strategic position regardless.
