As the completion of WesW's MedMOD 4.0 nears BETA release, there is the need for the people who are cooperating in the MOD, to gather and discuss info concerning specific matters.

This thread is aimed at the people currently working on the Iberian and Muslim factions. It has the objective of gathering work and info, as well as to allow the sharing of ideas for the solution of problems.

Although with these specific objectives in mind, anyone can share it's thoughts and sugestions, as well as ask info about this specific part of the MOD.

Thank you.

The most important thing now, regarding the research of the several factions involved, is to set certain priorities.

More urgent work (no panic though):

-Portuguese faction Kings, Heroes and names. (done)
-Spanish, Aragonese, Almohad and Egyptian factions Kings, Heroes and names corrections. (in construction)
-Turkish faction Kings, Heroes and names corrections. (paused)

Following work:

-Almohad, Egyptian and Turkish Units: historical descriptions and availability corrections.
-Portuguese, Spanish and Aragonese Knightly Orders: historical descriptions and availability corrections.

Supplemental work:

-Byzantine faction Kings, Heroes and names corrections.
-Byzantine Units: historical descriptions corrections.

As a template for your work, I've written here the list of Portuguese Kings, Heroes and Names. Take into consideration that this list is far more detailed than what is necessary for the MOD. For significant Heroes and Kings you need not include the history of the character, but a simple short description of his achievements. Not necessary for the others. First name for Kings and Princesses. Name and Surname for Heroes. A simple reference to the era when the specific character was alive is necessary. Basic characterists and V&V to be included if of historical significance. Most common names and surnames of the period.

D. Fernando I was a far too ambicious man for his habilities. Although a decent administrator of peace affairs, he let himself be involved in the succession crisis that agitated Castile. Seeing that he had a chance to unify the crown of Portugal and Castile, after the victory of usurpor Henrique de Trastamara, he unwisely decided to start a war with Castile. This bold but stupid move led to a great empoverishment of the realm due to the 3 wars fought during the next 14 years. To add insult to injury, he died without heirs, causing the sucessional crisis that would lead to the Castilian invasions.

1383 - 1385
Sucessional crisis. Portuguese-Castillian War.

Command:4
Accumen:7

Virtues: Highly Educated (+1 Acumen, +1 Command, -1 Piety).
Vices: Ambitious (+1 Dread, -1 Loyalty). Hesitant (-1 Loyalty, -2 Morale).

Very important monarch. The bastard son of D. Pedro I was the Master of the Order of Avis at the time of the sucessional crisis. One of the pretenders to the throne was none other than Juan I of Castile. However, the Master of Avis received support of the emerging burguesy of Lisboa, Porto and many inland cities. Although educated and ambitious, he was an influentiable man. The fortune of the war was mainly decided by the intervention of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira and the insubmition of the Portuguese population.

Although he was a reserved and irresolute individual, he was also highly educated and inteligent. In a time when the Kingdom was depleated due to the uninterrupted wars with Castile and when the plague hit everywhere, he completelly concentrated himself in energic actions for the improvement of the administration of the realm. During his short-lived kingdom, he was responsible for the codification of the legislation, the reorganization of the treasury and tribunals, and the rebuilding of the navy.

1438 - 1481
D. Afonso V "The African"
(born 15 January 1432 Sintra - died 28 August 1481 Batalha)

Dread:3
Command:4
Accumen:3

Virtues: Educated (+1 Acumen).
Vices: Pleasure Seeker (-15% Agricultural output, -15% Trade Income). Absentee Landlord (-2 Happiness, -30% Agricultural output)

A very religious man, he was however vain and easely influentiated by false flatery. His religious beliefs made him launch crusades against North Africa when he should have focused on the administration of the realm. He was, nevertheless, responsible by the capture of Alcácer-Seguer (1458) and Tangier (1471) winning the name of Afonso the African. Earlier, influentiated by greedy noblemen, he was convinced that his uncle D. Pedro, one of the most righteous men in Portuguese History and the regent of Portugal after the death of D. Duarte I, was ploting against him. So, in a bizarre manouver, after letting his acolites insult and humiliate D. Pedro for 3 years, he used the Royal Army to attack and kill his uncle and followers. A very poor choise for a stateman.

I didn’t elaborate the next kings of the 2nd dinasty, due to the fact that they belong to the Renaissance Period and the Age of Discoveries.

Here is all there is for famous kings. The tabs will mess up the alignment, but as you can see, none of them are given very high command capabilities (the third number). I just wish I knew when these guys might appear in the game.

Monarch names of the Seljuk (suitable for early) and Ottoman houses (for high & late) can be found, in proper order, at the following website:

http://www.kessler-web.co.uk/History/KingListsMiddEast/AnatoliaRum.htm

"Kilijarslan" was an especially important figure in the history of the Crusades.

IIRC, the famous kings don't have a certain period when they can appear, only the name and 'number' have to be correct. I think it is possible to have a Henry V as the English in 1250 or a Richard I (lionheart) in 1390. But once again, I'm not that sure about it.

On Turkish units etc..., the following may help:

http://www.net.hu/corvinus/lib/warso/warso01.htm
http://www.net.hu/corvinus/lib/warso/warso28.htm
http://www.net.hu/corvinus/lib/warso/warso05.htm

I know it is a 'bit' (70 years) outside the timeframe, but the extensive use of pike formations or 'ordonnance' units in 1321 isn't also historical correct.

Another site on Ottomans:

http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/history/shaw/classes/111a/98F/lec6.htm

Iconium (Konya) has to be where Antalya stands, while Antalya has always been, and still is, a shore town.

There are other mistakes in that region: The capital of lesser armenia (sivas) should be the capital of Rum. While a proper capital for L-A would be Tarsus (coastal)

Hope it helped a bit.

I am kinda old school academic, so instead of internet sources (often wrong or inadequate), I will rely on books and Turkic history enyclopedia. Though these links are indeed great places to start with.

P.S.: I got a friend who is a semi-pro 3D modeller and also has a great drawing. If needed I can ask him to draw Turkic units to display on the unit info screen. (black/white one).

P.S.: "Main responsable" is too ambitious a title. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-toff.gif Everybody must post whatever information they got, as nobody knows everyhting.

You're absolutely right on your concern, Cebei, but the links I've provided have been "approved" by a genuine Turk (me). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Still not "scholar information" but I think I've found the reason behind the confusion of Antalya:

"Alâiye" (pres. Alanya) was indeed an important town by that era and afterwards and it's recenty in the administrtive area of the "county" or "department" (for lack of a proper word) of Antalya.

What disturbes me about the turks in M:TW is the names.I have sent Wes my suggestion for turkish names. Now I am sending you the same.
The turks didn't have surnames back then. But they had titles like bey and pasha. So I have written these titles as surname(in turkish these titles come after the forename). But that shortens the surname section a bit, so for balance I have added many forenames.

@Aymar,

Nice list... However, I'd spare it for high (Ottoman) era. The early era could borrow some Arabic ones (with moder Turkish spelling). Such as:

Giyâseddin
Izzeddin
Alâeddin

and Persian ones:

Keykavus
Keykubad
Keyhusrev

all being names of Seljuk monarchs.

Kiliçarslan would serve as forename and surname (actually more like cognomen), as it was used.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif Well, bey is a much more common title than the others.

There is a little problem concerning turkish names. As I have told, the surnames are not really surnames, but titles. So when a turkish general named Orhan Bey becomes an amir, his name changes to "Amir Bey", which is something like "Lord Sir".This is a little silly. The only way I found around this problem is, writing every possible
forename-surename combination in the forename section(after deleting SET_SURNAMES:: FN_TURKISH 9 line in
default_heroes).But this method increases the size of names.txt too much.

Commander of the Catalan Grand Company of possibly as many as 6,500 Almugavers (Catalan Light Infantry). The almugavers made themself famous by their ferocity and for their constant pillages and constant search of more booty, (allies or foes made no difference)
After the conflicts in the west mediterranean ended, the company was hired by Bizanc to fight against the turks. Under patronage of the King of Sicily Frederic and the support of French they parted, with the secret mission to seize Constantinople.
The precence of the almugavers however was a bad for the prestige of the Catalan Merchants in Orient and Jaume II seemed to be in knowledge of the Sicilian-frech secret plans for the Company, and he didnt like it.
One of the Almugaver comanders was Berenguer de Entença who probably by the orders of Jaume II made the plan to fail.
Roger de Flor and many almugavers were tricked and massacred near Constantinople, in responce the Grand Company razed and pillaged the region of northen Greece (Thrace, Macedonia, Tessalia). This was known as the Catalan Vengance.
After slauthering 700 knights and 20k infantry-men they gain controled the Duchy of Athens and wanted to stabilish themself there and enjoy the spoils of war.
However they needed to be vassals of a kingdom to be reconized politically (Jaume II was not pleased by the performance of the almogaver in greece and the desprestige they brought was enought already;
Charles de Valois already failed to impose a new leader to the Company),
so they offered loyalty to the King of Sicily who still hoped to take control of the company and use it for his puposes, but the Company mantained their autonomy.
The Duchy of Athens and Neopatria went to fully control of the Aragonese crown only during the reign of Pere III.

SELJUK UNIT ROSTER (start-1299):

Seljuk Light Horse: The majority of Seljuk tribal cavalry were light cavalry armed with a composite bow. Up to 100 arrows might be carried in quivers, bow case and even in boots. Typical garb was a topcoat with a right over left flap. A variety of caps and turbans were worn.

- Armed with bows
- Increased arrow number
- Armored

Turcoman Light Horse: Turkoman auxiliaries made up the bulk of Seljuk armies. Turkomans were a Turkish nomadic group originating from Central Asia who, while hard to discipline, and who generally fought for plunder, were well regarded for their fierceness. They were armed with bow and javelins. They wore topcoats and black fur or felt caps. Turkomans are a quite versatile troop type. Turkomans light cavalry appear in Medieval Syrian, Fatimid, Ayyibid, Mamluk, Khwarizmain, Ikhanid, Timurid, Islamic Persian armies among others.

- Armed with javelins/bows
- Fast
- Poor morale

Askari: These cavalry were the personal troops, known as Askaris, of the Seljuk Sultan and/or the major emirs. Askaris were a full time force paid in cash or with use of land (the iqta'at). They wore armour of various eastern styles and were armed with light lance, bow, sword and shield.

- Armed with bows
- Armored
- Good attack
- Very good defence

Turcoman auxilliary: Due to increasing clashes with the Byzantine army, Seljuk state felt a need for infantry force to protect the cavalry. These Seljuk light foot soldiers are skirmishers, armed with javelins and short swords.

- Armed with javelins
- Good defence
- Poor morale

Turcoman auxilliary archers: Well this was nicely done in MM3.14 no need to alter.

Armenian HC: No need to change. But, I doubt if we should continue using it after 1299. I sense they turn into ordinary Ottoman Sipahi after 1300. Though this is FULLY open to criticisms.

OTTOMAN UNIT ROSTER (1299-1453):

Akinci (appears 1299) Akinci (or raider) cavalry wears a style of buff-leather armor originally introduced by the 13th century Mongols. The circular ear-pieces on his helmet are also of Mongol derivation, while his straight sword is typically Iranian.
- Armed with bow
- Good attack
- Good defence
- Fast

Turcoman Tribal Horseman: (ugrade of Seljuk –pre1299- Turcoman horse) Turcoman horse archers formed the bulk of early Ottoman armies. Most would have been unarmored or have only a leather-lamellar cuirass. Regiment’s leader also wears an iron helmet with an ample mail aventail.

- Armed with bow
- Fast
- Vulnerable to missiles

Ottoman Sipahi: I dont feel any need to alter the exact unit in the game.

Ottoman Baltaci: Now in MM3.14 this is brilliantly done. Its MTW translation is the Ottoman Infantry. It carried an axe and sword and also a large shield, but did not have any bows, so whoever suggested the removal of bows of Ottoman infantry, did very well. Features are the same. Baltaci; were used in assaulting fortifications, its axe could break wooden gates and the shield could protect the infantry from missiles.

Ottoman Deli: These horsemen were very light armored scouts. They were fast and the horses had tremendous stamina. Their job was to scout the battlefield or bring routers back for ransom.

- Their stats can be done the same as hobilars

Tatar cavalryman: (appears around 1400, bonus in Crimea) Tatar tribes from the Crimea who fought in traditional style as horse-archers, were the most effective cavalry in the Ottoman army. They wore iron skull cap under his fur hat, and a (probably) captured Russian mail and plate cuireass under his felt coat. Tatars were not “Ottoman” per-se and the inclusion of Tatars in an Ottoman army depended on the good relations of Ottoman sultan with the Tatar khan.

My research gave me no clue about a specific Armenian-type cavalry in the Ottoman army. They rather rode along Seljuk armies which was pre-1250 approximately.

Yaya infantry: (appears in 1326, bonus in Bulgaria) Yaya infantry looks similar to a 14th-15th century Turkish nomad, typical features being the segmented hat. As a foot soldier, he also has the laced gaiters of an Anatolian or Iranian peasant. Yaya infantry used crossbows (which was a Hungarian influence) and carried a small shield to protect himself from missles. He also has a sword which he can use to protect himself in melee.

- Armed with crossbow
- Shield protects from missle fire
- Good defence
- Fast

Nefer Janissary Infantry: (appears in 1360) Nefers are equipped with a bow and wears a fluted “turban-zirh”, chain mail helmet, and a mail hauberk beneath his coat. His sword is a European import suspended in a Middle Eastern manner. If I am not mistaken, in MM3.14 they got a bonus in Anatolia or Rum. They were traditionally bonusful in the Balkans, so I guess original Bulgaria bonus is more correct. These guys were raised from Christian provinces of Ottomans.

Features same with the Janissary infantry in the game

Zirhli Nefer: (appears 1413) Janissaries who wore full armor were simply known as Zirhli Nefer or ‘armored soldiers’. They were used as assault troops and formed part of the Serdengeçti or ‘head risker’ elite. They had highly decorated gilded helmet with a plume holder on the front, a flexible neck guard, a mail-plate cuirass and thigh and knee protections. His shield is a form adopted from the Ottomans’ Eastern European neighbours, while his tirpan staff has Italian influence.

Features same with the Janissary Heavy Infantry in the game PLUS disciplined, excellent morale and ignore all routers regardless of elite or not

Kesici Silahkarda Müsellem: (appears 1413) Janissary Assault squads also included archers, because the muskets took so long to reload. Kesici archers had longer range and better accuracy than ordinary archers and carried a crude wooden pavise to protect himself from missle fire.

- Features same with the Janissary Archers in the game PLUS a pavise and disciplined, excellent morale and ignore all routers

Yanici Silahkarda Müsellem: (appears in 1440, GAH You can only use them for 13 turns lol) Janissaries’ use of firearms and cannons has always been feared by Ottomans’ enemies. At first Janissaries, so proud of their neat appearance, disliked dirty guns but after witnessing their power in Hungarian wars they accepted the arquebus. Typical Ottoman matchlocks were longer and larger than those of the West and according to a French observer, Ottoman arquebusiers could shot from a great distance, even by holding arquebus with their one hand. Janissaries’ enemies also noted that Ottoman marksmen could shoot accurately by moonlight, while speed and accuracy of Ottoman musketry still amazed the Austrians until the late 17th century. They also carry swords for melee.

- Fast
- Disciplined
- Excellent morale
- Shoot poorly in bad weather
- Vulnerable to missiles
- Ignore all routers
- Good defence
- Missiles very good vs armor

P.S.: These guys were historically the pride of Janissaries and fuelled the expansion of Ottomans to a great degree. They could shoot a massive 80 gram bullets, piercing through 3-4 ranks of armored infantry. When you consider that these guys were trained from infancy, they could achieve extreme accuracy. So I think (keeping in mind that they can be used only for a little time frame of 13 turns 1440-1453) it wont be wrong to program them historically accurate.

Levents: (Appears 1410) Levents were Ottoman “marines”. They conducted amphibious operations like assaults on coastal fortifications and boarded ships. Their arquebuses enabled weakening an enemy formation before charging in with their tırpans. They were not Sultan’s slave soldiers and had relatively independent life, which made them inclined to running away when things go wrong.

- Very strong charge
- Very good attack
- Good defence
- Missiles very good vs armor
- Poor morale
P.S.: Their arquebuses should be weaker than Yanici silahkardas’ arquebuses.

Bostanci Havani: Janissary bostanci corps were responsible for siege warfare and developing extraordinary siege weaponry. This trench-mortar threw 2 grenades and was cocked and then fired by pulling two seperate chords. The grenades are not as destructive as the standard siege cannons, so should be used not against the castle walls but on those hiding behind them.

- Mortar firing two rounds at the same time

Tradable goods in Asia minor

Spices: saffron, cumin, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, mace, pepper, salt, and sugar.
Drugs: opium, balm of mithridate, arsenic, benjamin (the balsamic resin, benzion), mirobolani (an astringent plum-like fruit), and perfumes.
Textiles: silk (green, blue, red), crimson damask, crimson velvet, camlets, cotton, linens, carpets.
Foods: wheat, barley, millet, raisins, olive oil, oranges, lemons, rhubarb, wines (malmsey, madeira).
Dyes: Cochineal (red), indigo (blue).
Luxuries: gold dust, slaves, copper, quicksilver, coral, Chinese porcelain, Lemnian earth, precious stones, pearls, frankincense, sandalwood, alum, gum arabic, glass trinkets, mirrors, wallpaper, furs.

I was unable to find a precise division of these goods into the provinces. These are Ottoman tradable goods in Asia Minor, but the source does not deal with more precise assesment.

- Agriculture-wise the most fertile region under Ottoman rule was the Anatolia and the valley between Euphrates and Tigris. Rum, Nicaea, Anatolia and Lesser Armenia are high income provinces in general.

- All of the Asia Minor provinces have high risk of earthquake.

- Trebizond, Edessa and Nicaea are floodable areas.

What? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif

Those aren't Middle Age names?

Isn't it possible to have genuine Turkish female names of the Middle Ages period? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif

When I looked for the names, I specifically searched for Central Asian original Turkic names. These words were used in the original Turkic dialect even before the Middle Ages. When you say Medieval Turkic name that means original central asian Turkic names molded with Persian, Arabian and Greek names.

I could have gone the easy way and list Arabic-Turkic names like Ayse, Fatma, but I wanted genuine Turkic names. The names in my list ARE Turkic, but no one knows whether they were used as a name during the medieval times. Some of these words are used in modern Turkey as names (like the recent American trend of giving children, names of authentic places like Mali) however that doesnot mean that these words werent used in the medieval times as names.

So these words ARE medieval. However, I listen to advices to omit the ones that sound too modern to be names. Now the list looks more authentic.

For sake of authencity, some Arabic/Persian ones could be used in a blend. The more you get later in history, the less abundant the Turcic ones.

That said;

Bagdad Hatun was an important figure herself, with her ill-fate. Wife of the Celâyirî Sultan, the Mongol Il-Khan sees and wants her. Her husband was executed and she was married to the Khan (Ebu Said Bahadır, son of Oljaytu)...

No need to feel that. The German Religion Geschichtschule in the 19c was the first impetus in the West to take eastern thought seriously and to study and translate their texts. The Germans, once into something, are *ahem* rather thorough, and almost any academic field you choose you ignore what the Germans have done there at your peril. :-)

Fine work btw. The arab names for the Turks were one of the issues in MTW demanding correction.

Yeah, but I would still expect some Turkish historians matching the competence of German historians. While Germans already finished Ottoman history, our big guys are still concentrating on useless issues like whether Abdulhamid II could play the piano.

Quote[/b] ]Fine work btw. The arab names for the Turks were one of the issues in MTW demanding correction.

Yeah I decided to Turkify those names, otherwise the name list would be just like the Egyptian name list, only with different pronounciations.

Secondly, the weight of Greek-Arab-Persian influences on Turkish names change between 1000-1500, so I couldnt have created 7 separate lists of Turkic names each appearing on different trigger years. Instead I decided to create a multi-purpose Turkic name list to fit both Seljuk and Ottoman times. With advices, I trimmed too modern ones; the one right now is right in the sense that all the names were historically used by Turks during the Middle Ages. If I list Ottoman names, they wont fit Seljuk names and same applies to other way.

Vou sugerir a ordem dos Templários para Early e High. hi guys glad the mod is coming along nicely. so i have some spare time this easter and i decided to post this small list of suggested changes for the next version of the medmod, after playing more hours that is healthy or socially acceptable (?) so i put this in consideration, if any of this sounds moderately rational to be included, so be it. oh, and sorry if its off topic, this seemed like the right thread to post it.
cheers

1)lower the cost/construction time of the crusades/jihad. i think their power just hasn´t risen enough to justify its cost. i´ve only seen once a crusade with 2400 men, and countless games passed without a single one. i propose 5years/2000florins.

2)take off the italians ability to build crusader units. as it´s right now, they only have to capture and hold some island or the holy land to gain access to some of the best heavy knights, and this compared to their elite infantry is just unfair, really unbalanced.

3)i still think that the byzantine infantry should be a 100-men-fmaa unit, to diferentiate them from the catholic, muslim and pagan infantry, but maybe i´m a bit parcialized.

4)a change to the mercenary availability. it happened a lot to me that mercenaries are available only for a short time after the construction of the inn, and then i never see any merc again. this happened constantly.

5)take off the ranged cavalry for kings/princes, this makes them easy pickings. i think this has already been solved, so lets move on.

6)a return of the katatanks again, i may be parcialized (the byz are my favourites), but i think that since now all the prince-king units are 40-men units the kata should be of 50, at an increased cost. i also saw a good post of SicilianVespers regarding byz units in the bkb thread http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=27;t=16218;st=325

7)if possible, to take the bows off the modified hybrid units. also, the ottoman infantry is armed with swords, isn´t it? in the unit description it says they have axes, but in the battlemap they swing swords (i think)

8)i think the urban militia should be available to all the factions in conquered territories outside their homelands. think it this way: the ai expands aggresively and leaves their homelands undefended. then another faction attacks quickly and takes them. so they cant recruit more troops (peasants don´t count) and get eventually wiped out. this happens constantly, the ai has not the ability to understand completely the concept of homelands. so, this way, this homeless faction could recruit a semi-useful unit, maybe a few mercenaries and have at least some hope of winning their lands back. maybe the peasants could be eliminated, i don´t know.

9)i don´t think it´s possible, but do something so the ai builds less ships. in a game the burgundians had conquered asia minor, the middle east, north africa and parts of italy and spain, they were the only mediterranean power but they still had almost a full stack of ships in every sea space. i was the only one with med prescence (polish) and was allied with them, and i saved their a$$ quite a few times, because their army was bankrupt due to the heavy support cost of the ships.

10)replace the alan buildable mercenaries for something a little more useful, almost all of the factions have some unit akin to them, or maybe be strengtened a bit.

11)place unarmored swiss halberdiers as buildable mercs, now that switzerland has been eliminated as a region and faction.

12)to strengten the rebels a bit. if you mean to replace them for minor factions, maybe they could have some extra cash to start with.

13)is there any chance for a return of the old hashishin? maybe taking off their bow, 24 instead of 12 men, upgraded stats, hide anywhere, fast, and less construction requirements. and change the actual hashishins for some muslim heavy infantry. this is solely a personal preference.

14)give the biz a few more ships in high (maybe in early). now, if they mean to retake constantinople, they will start a war with the powerful latins. if they had more ships they could cover their backs against coastal attacks.

15)give the germans a few more units (in all eras) so they don´t get hammered so easily from all fronts (maybe giving the emperor more influence)

16)modify the outremer infantry in a sword unit (i´d like some kind of swabian swordsman, but maybe cmaa would be better. i don´t think the crusader need 2 spear unit, and the outremer spearmen are very good. maybe this would be a little unbalancing (now the latins are very powerful)

17)make foundrys/cannons more expensive.

18)eliminate the trebuchet or the mangonel. they´re almost the same. and for god´s sake take out the ballista, it´s VERY useless, leave that to R:TW

19)faction descriptions: need to be done. if noone feels like doing them i humbly offer myself

phew, well thats all i can think of right now

Sure. Suggestions are always taken into consideration. But that doesn't mean that they will be implemented. WesW has total control about gameplay and unit alterations, so, he could and probably will answer better than myself. However, I'll try to see what I can do...

Quote[/b] ]1)lower the cost/construction time of the crusades/jihad. i think their power just hasn´t risen enough to justify its cost. i´ve only seen once a crusade with 2400 men, and countless games passed without a single one. i propose 5years/2000florins.
IIRC, the number of units is directly connected to cost. So, (less cost)=(less units). Number of years can be changed though.

Quote[/b] ]2)take off the italians ability to build crusader units. as it´s right now, they only have to capture and hold some island or the holy land to gain access to some of the best heavy knights, and this compared to their elite infantry is just unfair, really unbalanced.
I was thinking of talking with WesW, about some Italian faction alterations. But that will depend on the future Italian factions to be included in the MOD

Quote[/b] ]3)i still think that the byzantine infantry should be a 100-men-fmaa unit, to diferentiate them from the catholic, muslim and pagan infantry, but maybe i´m a bit parcialized.
I agree. But that is just my opinion. I would also like to rework the names and capabilities of the Byz. But there is more important work to do now. WesW also has final judgement on that.

Quote[/b] ]4)a change to the mercenary availability. it happened a lot to me that mercenaries are available only for a short time after the construction of the inn, and then i never see any merc again. this happened constantly.
That never happened to me... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif

Quote[/b] ]5)take off the ranged cavalry for kings/princes, this makes them easy pickings. i think this has already been solved, so lets move on.
For Siphai of the Porte I don't agree. For Kataphraktoi yes, because in reality they are effectivelly Klibanophoroi.

Quote[/b] ]6)a return of the katatanks again, i may be parcialized (the byz are my favourites), but i think that since now all the prince-king units are 40-men units the kata should be of 50, at an increased cost. i also saw a good post of SicilianVespers regarding byz units in the bkb thread http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=27;t=16218;st=325

No. Axes. I think they have axes in the battle map also. Also, there aren't many multipurpouse units anymore.

Quote[/b] ]8)i think the urban militia should be available to all the factions in conquered territories outside their homelands. think it this way: the ai expands aggresively and leaves their homelands undefended. then another faction attacks quickly and takes them. so they cant recruit more troops (peasants don´t count) and get eventually wiped out. this happens constantly, the ai has not the ability to understand completely the concept of homelands. so, this way, this homeless faction could recruit a semi-useful unit, maybe a few mercenaries and have at least some hope of winning their lands back. maybe the peasants could be eliminated, i don´t know.
Problem is, I think WesW unabled that to make them more protective of their homelands. Enabling that, will make them less willing to defend their homelands. I might be wrong though... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif

Quote[/b] ]9)i don´t think it´s possible, but do something so the ai builds less ships. in a game the burgundians had conquered asia minor, the middle east, north africa and parts of italy and spain, they were the only mediterranean power but they still had almost a full stack of ships in every sea space. i was the only one with med prescence (polish) and was allied with them, and i saved their a$$ quite a few times, because their army was bankrupt due to the heavy support cost of the ships.
Yeap. I personally don't know how to solve that. WesW will answer that better than me.

Quote[/b] ]10)replace the alan buildable mercenaries for something a little more useful, almost all of the factions have some unit akin to them, or maybe be strengtened a bit.
I love AMC. You just have to know how to use them. They are anti-skirmisher and anti-routers cav (with excellent morale), only.

Quote[/b] ]11)place unarmored swiss halberdiers as buildable mercs, now that switzerland has been eliminated as a region and faction.
WesW already has ideas for them... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wink.gif

Quote[/b] ]12)to strengten the rebels a bit. if you mean to replace them for minor factions, maybe they could have some extra cash to start with.
No need to. With so many more playable starting factions, there is no need to.

Quote[/b] ]13)is there any chance for a return of the old hashishin? maybe taking off their bow, 24 instead of 12 men, upgraded stats, hide anywhere, fast, and less construction requirements. and change the actual hashishins for some muslim heavy infantry. this is solely a personal preference.
We aren't going to make fantasy units, OK?

Quote[/b] ]14)give the biz a few more ships in high (maybe in early). now, if they mean to retake constantinople, they will start a war with the powerful latins. if they had more ships they could cover their backs against coastal attacks.
That's a balancing issue. That will probably be made after the BETA is available.

Quote[/b] ]15)give the germans a few more units (in all eras) so they don´t get hammered so easily from all fronts (maybe giving the emperor more influence)
Balancing issue. As above...

Quote[/b] ]16)modify the outremer infantry in a sword unit (i´d like some kind of swabian swordsman, but maybe cmaa would be better. i don´t think the crusader need 2 spear unit, and the outremer spearmen are very good. maybe this would be a little unbalancing (now the latins are very powerful)
Again, we aren't going to make fantasy units. Only Historical ones.

Quote[/b] ]17)make foundrys/cannons more expensive.
Balancing issue.

Quote[/b] ]18)eliminate the trebuchet or the mangonel. they´re almost the same. and for god´s sake take out the ballista, it´s VERY useless, leave that to R:TW
They aren't the same. Try sieging a castle with 4 trebuchets and then with 4 mangonels. You'll see the difference. As for the ballista, WesW probably has already improved it.

Little point: I *love* hybrid units. My Ottoman tactic using 8 hybrid ottoman/turcoman infantry, 6 sipahis of the Porte, and 2 units of saracen infantry is an effective one and is very nice to use. ARROWS are everywhere However, if those hybrids are taken away my missile power will be greatly reduced, as I cannot just take weak archers where flankers are necessary... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

I know, the a.i. doesn't really understand them, but they do work. For example a sicilian army against my byzantines actually used their futuwas like medium infantry after the sicilian knights were crushed. Not only in one battle. And they weren't the only ones. In my games these hybrids do charge But only after all other options are gone, as should be. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I feel you pain. I'm also an avid hybrid unit user. Specially with the Turks. They have lots of those units. It's, in fact, one of the reasons I like to play the Turks so much... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-sad.gif

Problem is: WesW found that the AI uses very poorly the dual habilities. So, it wastes their potencial. He turned those units into a specialized unit.

Example:

Ottoman Infantry - H2H unit: Axe and Shield.

Turcoman Foot Soldiers (now called Turcoman Archers): Archer unit: weaker H2H capabilities.

This one is easy.

Alan Mercenary Cavalry:

Requirements: {HORSE_BREEDER2,SWORDSMITH,INN}

Factions: FN_BYZANTINE, FN_HUNGARIAN, FN_ITALIAN, FN_POLISH, FN_RUSSIAN, FN_SICILIAN

I am pretty sure you also need a Castle (level 7 castle) to build Chapter Houses. This was because Crusades are so expensive.

I would like to leave them in, too, but the AI only rarely uses them correctly for medium infantry. The way I have it now, most archer units have good speed and a decent attack, which I hope will make them good for chasing down routers or charging late into battles to break weakened units.
The money it takes to give them more armour or a higher attack is mostly wasted, since
1) the AI rarely makes use of these attributes,
2) most battles are over or decided before they have used all their ammo, and thus they never engage in melee,
3) in large battles, I have these units retreat so more archers or dedicated melee units can be brought in, again wasting their melee capabilities.

As for hybrid cavalry units, the AI usually brings them up to engage your leader units when attacking, which leaves them to be mowed down by concentrated fire from infantry archers or your own horse archers, firing from a height advantage.
I change my archers to engage the attack units when they come within range, but once melee is joined, I change them back to the cavalry units. Since I choose to attack the heavier cavalry, light, cheap horse archers with the same bonuses to speed and decent attack as the infantry archers make the most sense to me.

Btw, you seem to have missed the Faction Descriptions thread that I posted a month or two earlier. Some of the stuff you listed should be covered in it.

hi guys glad the mod is coming along nicely. so i have some spare time this easter and i decided to post this small list of suggested changes for the next version of the medmod, after playing more hours that is healthy or socially acceptable (?) so i put this in consideration, if any of this sounds moderately rational to be included, so be it. oh, and sorry if its off topic, this seemed like the right thread to post it.
cheers

This is the right thread for comments, general suggestions and opinions, and, later, for play-testing results.
Suggestions for, and the results of, the provincial and factional work and such for the mod need to be posted in the Alchemist Lab threads.
Btw, great work, guys. I am so happy that so many of you have taken this not as work, but as an opportunity to improve the game's historical depth and accuracy. This is what I have been wanting to receive with the requests I have made.

Version three, Total Immersion, took the game to a whole new level of realism, and I want this version to take it several levels further, with appropriate names for all the faction-specific stuff such as titles and names, and accurate provincial information such as trade goods, resources and land values.
The new map, with all its changes, will add a lot to the game's accuracy as well.

The new, much-improved strategic map alone is a lot to do, but it's just the tip of the iceberg of all the version four additions and improvements.

These include;
new factions, new buildings, new units, and a greatly improved Heroes text. Again, these alone would be enough for a major expansion of the mod, but there's more....

I have totally re-worked most everything regarding the existing units, going into excruciating detail, literally. The result is greatly improved, more varied factions with new types of units, which the AI should handle much better than many of the current units, namely hybrids, yet still be carefully balanced with one another... I hope. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-anxious.gif

Homelands have been set for the new map, though I have not yet integrated the new factions and changed provinces into the units text. Would it be too much to say I really, really dread having to get into that?

Ships have been improved, such as allowing the Alomhads to build ships in Leon and Castile, and the addition of a new ship from the VC, the Boat, to the Catholic lineup. I then freed the Carrack to be built by any faction, and gave it the unique ability to go from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Be careful, though, because it's not very heavily armoured.

Game issues have been solved, such as getting Artillery units off the top of the battlefield unit queue.

The projectile text has been over-hauled, with a few major changes to some projectile types, and minor to medium changes made to most of the rest. I have also greatly expanded the descriptions and expositions regarding the settings, including everything from their historical use to the physics of the arrows themselves, which their stats now reflect with great accuracy.

Needless to say, all the charts and readmes have been, or will be, updated or totally re-written, including new readmes to help break up all the varied information that used to be included in the Main Readme. I have tried to take out specific details covered in other documents or the spreadsheet, so I don't think the overall amount of material that you need to read before using the mod is going to be much larger.
The Newby file has been expanded and re-written, mostly because I am bundling the 2.04 version of the Medmod with version four, and am recommending that Newby's try it out some first before attempting to grasp all the version four changes at once.
Again, these parts would be enough for a major expansion.

I have everything mapped out that still needs to be done, it's just that my health problems keep coming back to knock me down, and we are entering full allergy season here. The next two months are always my toughest part of the year, so things will probably be slow as far as my progress. I had hoped to be through with everything by now, but my allergies actually started giving me problems three weeks ago, earlier in the year than I can ever remember, and they are primarily what has slowed me down so much here lately.

There is still a lot for you guys to do, though, if you wanted to, like making the faction titles. I saw that Cebei has included those in his writeup, but the only other ones I have are for Georgia and Armenia, which Sicilian Vespers happened to run across in his research and sent me.
If you want to, you guys can do the same factions that you did before, so there won't be a need for a dedicated thread or volunteering for factions. You can just email them to me when you get finished. These are not needed for the beta, but I would like to have them done sometime, to complete the historical accuracy.
The faction write-ups need to done as well, as dire wolf mentioned, but they will probably have to be done after the beta is out, because I figure you will want to have all the faction info when you are making them, and that won't be put together until everything is done, and even then things will change with the beta play-testing.

Well, I hope this gets everyone up-to-date with the current status of the mod, and myself. This version is entering its sixth month of development, which is more than I ever planned for, but I also had no idea just how much was involved in all that is being added and changed. I have never before had to do the amount of research and planning for an update that I have for this one. It has forced me to develop techniques and disciplines that I have never performed before, which is one of the things that I hope my mod work does for me that will be useful later on in life. And btw, this mod is going to blow everyone out of the water.

This last week didn't had much time for the mod(due to exams), but at last I could get some info on provinces.

borders:

Cordoba --> NewCastille
ARID AT_SOUTHERN_EUROPEAN INLAND HLL2FLT NO_RIVER
To be more realistic there should be a river but I think this way is better to reflect the many years during which the Almohads controlled the territories south of Toledo without many problems and when those were conquered by the spanish the moors raided them constantly without many difficulties.

Cordoba --> Leon
ARID AT_SOUTHERN_EUROPEAN INLAND FLAT RIVER

Cordoba --> Portugal
ARID AT_ISLAMIC INLAND HILLY RIVER

Cordoba --> Murcia
ARID AT_ISLAMIC INLAND MNT2FLT NO_RIVER

NewCastille --> Cordoba
ARID AT_ISLAMIC INLAND FLT2MNT NO_RIVER
I think is the most appropriate terrain, since Sierra Morena was the natural barrier there. The mountain passes were always well defended and previous invasion to that of Las Navas de Tolosa, were usually easily repelled by the Almohads (the Battle of Alarcos). Las Navas de Tolosa was an exception itself, since its said that the Spanish found an unguarded mountain pass and were able to present battle in a more favorable terrain. Regarding the main mountain pass in Sierra morena its said that a thousand men could defend it from the rest of those who populate the world.

NewCastille --> Murcia
ARID AT_ISLAMIC INLAND HLL2MNT NO_RIVER

NewCastille --> OldCastille
ARID AT_SOUTHERN_EUROPEAN INLAND FLT2HLL RIVER

NewCastille --> Aragon, Valencia
ARID AT_SOUTHERN_EUROPEAN INLAND HILLY NO_RIVER

OldCastille --> NewCastille
ARID AT_SOUTHERN_EUROPEAN INLAND HLL2FLT RIVER
In the campaign of the Castillians to take Toledo during the reign of Alfonso VI, many battles were fough by the river Tagus.

Thank you for the compliments. The last couple of times I posted was in the old 3.14 thread, so some of you may not have noticed them.

Basically, my health is getting better, though it still goes in cycles. Some days I can get up and do stuff, and others I cannot. A couple of weeks ago, I consulted with a local herbalist, and he recommended a couple of things that seem to be helping me considerably. I have actually gotten stronger during the middle of allergy season, which is always my toughest time of the year.
Unfortunately, I had to spend my up time this past week getting ready for my trip to Vriginia, which I will begin in two weeks (May 22nd). This weekend I have been back down, but still able to get the rest of the preparations finished, along with a couple of other things that I had needed to do for a while.

In my 3.14 posts, I told how I was able to work about 16 hrs. on the mod two weeks ago, and I got an additional 10 hrs. or so done about 10 days ago. The text work has taken considerably longer than I had anticipated, much of it due to the sorry state in which CA left many of the files.

However, if this week's up days are as good as they were last week, I might be able to finish the beta. I should certainly be able to finish it and perhaps have some time to de-bug before I start my trip, and even then I should have a good bit of time to devote to the mod.

I mention the de-bugging because, with a mod this size, which couldn't be tested one part at a time, I expect to have some long, frustrating hours before the game will even load. After achieving that, I will try and get the Late campaign to load, and complete a test-game on auto before posting it. Even then, no one should expect that the initial version will be one that they can play like a regular game; it will probably be for de-bugging only, so don't get it unless you want to help out with that.

There will undoubtably be many things like those that Norman pointed out. I already know that I need help from someone with more graphics experience than I, for weapons problems with a few units.

So, wish me luck, and hopefully I will be finished with the mod soon.

For Aymar, and those of you on the Muslim Research team, I hope that you received my email last weekend. I need the work from you as soon as you can get it to me. If Aymar has not sent it to me in a couple more days, then he is probably having more computer problems. If so, I will send another email asking for you to send me your work individually.

Good to see that you're recovering. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

I have recieved your mail, but have been unable to finish the work yet. (Stupid PC configs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif is getting me crazy...). However, I will have it as ready as can be, before Friday 14th.

If any of the guys in the group has new data to add, please send it to me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Much of the game is programmed in .txt format. Exemples of this are the unit- and building production files, and most important, the campaign era files.
If you want to mod the game, you have to change at least one of these files, and very likely more than one.
The camapign era files (titled early, high and late) contain all possible info needed to set up the map at the beginning of a game: available trade goods, constructed buildings, units presents, border info, farm income,...
As you can imagine, these files are quite large and not always very structured (the people at CA know how they work, but modders have to discover it).

So, basically Wes wanted to say that he had a lot of work to edit all those txt files.

Well, perhaps I shouldn't have said sorry state, but rather cluttered and dis-organised. I remember ECS, one of the game's programmers, talking about how the files were put together by the programmers with no intention of having to go back into them. Thus they frequently appended new entries onto the end of files as the game was play-tested and de-bugged, rather than integrating them with the original entries. The files are filled with messages stating that this or that should be removed or integrated with the preceeding entries, and obviously no one ever got around to it, I am sure due to time constraints.

I have had to spend many hours trying to get the text entries to where I can understand them and tell what needed to be done for the mod. There are large amounts of code left over from Shogun, for example, in some of the files, and it can be very hard to figure out which is being used and which isn't.
In another example, there were entries for Region titles scattered among several unrelated files. I have tried to gather them together in one file, but it's still a guess sometimes as to which file they belong in.

There are also bits of text and code for ideas which were ultimately scrapped.
The largest amount is for a greatly expanded trade infrastructure, with several new resources and goods, and dozens of new buildings to exploit them.
It seems that CA decided to keep only the Metalsmith/Iron combo, and to use the Trading Post line of improvements for all goods, rather than giving each good its own line of buildings. CtP was absolutely filled with stuff like this; good ideas that the programmers couldn't get to work for some reason.
I am trying to put some of these unused items to work for the mod, and they will be an interesting category to research and debate as the play-testing goes along.

There are also entries that suggest to me that CA had orignally planned to have Border Fort assaults, but decided to simply keep the Castles instead.

IIRC, there were three main concepts that CA added for Medieval; Castle assaults, ships, and the trade network.
The last two were never a priority, which mostly explains their short-comings, and they were not even able to get the Castles working properly before release.
I am referring here to getting defenders onto walls, the automated wall and tower defenses, which surely weren't supposed to be like that originally, and even the screwed up assault auto-calculation formula.

Well, enough ranting. I worked about 8 hrs. last night.
I hope I can finish the Heroes text with a few more hours.
Once Aymar gets me his work, I can finish putting all of your work together and into the game. Even after I get that done, there is still a lot of work to do for the campaign files, but at least I have my list.

After all that, the biggest remaining job will be updating the buildings and units texts for the new provinces, factions, and homelands. This could be a nightmare if I don't watch out. It is going to be long and tedious even if I don't make any mistakes.

Lastly, I will be making the small maps and other faction-related graphics, and forming the file structure ala Vikings. I spent a lot of time researching this a few months ago, and I hope I can go through it without too much trouble. It just might take a long time, though.

Well, this is where things are at the moment. I have postponed my trip to Virginia for a few weeks, so that will not stand in the way. I am still aiming to get this thing out next week. Wish me luck.

I wish you luck, Wes You're taking an awful lot of work on you, that not even a fully healthy person should carry... Im at least sure I would never get such a big project done in time.

I've made my way through the text files myself and I must agree it's a mess, a dirty mess. I can't believe how they where able to work with that... There are even some bifs left for units they never used (CumanMercenaries), there's a left-over scenario where you assault a border fort, and the nummerous faction descriptions they revised but without deleting the old one... It's a jungle out there.

So good luck, I highly appreciate your work, and Im having still loads of fun with the older version 3.14 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

Wes, just a quick question. I read in the thread a tremendous amount of work is being put on Muslim/ Iberian factions. How's your mod looking on the east side of the map? I hate to be biased or patriotic, but I was really disappointed when I first got the game and there wasn't a Bulgarian faction in High and Late. Bulgaria was a major power in the 1200 and was a foe to be considered even in late 1300 before it fell to the Ottomans in 1396. Is Bulgaria in your mod?

cutepuppy
06-03-2004, 09:18
If everything goes OK, Bulgaria will be in (AFAIK).
But they are lacking famous kings and heroes. Maybe you can send Wes a small txt file with some famous bulgarian kings (those for the start of high and late and maybe 1 or 2 others) and heroes (generals, emissaries, bishops, assassins, spies). This file should include:
1)name and number for kings
2)name and birth date for heroes
3)command, dread, piety, acumen and v&v for kings and heroes, and loyalty for heroes.
The only heroes for bulgaria are now Peter and Ivan Asen, which where rebel in MTW.

I received an e-mail from Wes wednesday, and here is a part of it:

As far as famous kings, I have listed below which factions need them, and for which eras. I know that some of you have told me that it is hard to find Heroes and Famous Kings for some of the factions, and that is why I have sent you the Heroes text. You guys need to either come up with historical kings, change a Hero into a King, or just make up one or two guys with average stats and no v&v's. Don't be afraid to have a little fun with this, if nothing historically accurate comes up, but there is a popular legend or something that you could use instead.
A * means that there are presently no Heroes for the faction, either, for any campaign.

Almoravid- E(arly)*
Bulgarian- H(igh) and L(ate)
Chernigovian- E & H*
Cuman- L*
Outremer- H & L
Scottish- all eras
Serbian- all eras

Welsh- E & H

So, if anyone can help, he/she is always welcome. But always keep in mind the three points listed above.

hey wes, i just liked to know if you got the message with the scottish kings i sent you, and if it is of any use. sorry for the lack of imagination in the v&v's but i couldn't remember almost none of them (it wouldn't be a bad thing if this wasn't the game i played for the longest period of time...) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I swear I made a post here Wednesday night answering everyone's questions. I will try and quickly answer them again today.

Lithuania, along with all the other new factions, will be playable. Bohemians are not in, the Vlach are out of the mod, and the Epirians are now the Trebizonds, holding that province in Late, and appearing no where else.
If you like, I know enough about the files to add the Bohemians with only a few hours of work, if you supplied with all the names and details about kings, heroes, faction names and so-forth.

Here is an update of the factions that I need help with:

As you can see, dire wolf, I still need help with the Serbs. And even though I took them off the list, the Almoravid need a lot of help. All I did/have for them is:

Almoravid-
I copied the first three Almohad famous kings for the Almoravid, since they only appear in the Early campaign. The trouble is that the Almohads appear in Early, too, in control of Algeria, Tunusia and Libya. We will have to get Aymara or Faisal or someone to get things historically straight.

Here is the only Almoravid hero that I have:

Ibn, Mardanish, born in 1147, 3C, 2D, 5P, 4A, 6L, no_v,

Hi Wes.
I've missed Bohemian faction in your mod, so I've decided to make it on my own. May I alter it (and add Bohemian faction)? It's cool and missing Bohemian faction was the only flaw.

Is it possible to exceed 256 limit in number of units? It's pretty bloody limit, btw.

cutepuppy
Around 1150 or so they became part (more or less) of the HRE (the king of Bohemia being 1 of the 7 electors for the emperor in the 14th century).

Right you are. But this didn't prevent states in HRE to fight each against the other and take control of other states on their own. Bohemians controlled Poland more often than Polish Bohemia and Bohemian Kings were elected as HRE Emperors for few times. King Charles IV governed from Prague and Premysl II Otakar was so powerful, that rest of HRE was fearful of him.

Wes im playing the 3.14 version and waiting for the next release now i have a small suggestion: if its possible to have different maps for each time period so the positions of faction would be reflected (like the split to two Kiev half cuman half kievan and greece split to four only in high and late) and also if each period would be like an expasion like VI with its own names prod files etc ect that would help alot to the variety...

Well, Bohemia should be a part of the HRE at all times according to the terms presented by MTW regarding the HRE as a faction - if we do as you propose, we might as well make all the other duchies independent.

In a game which more accurately depicts the feudal system, and thus the HRE, Crusader Kings, Bohemia is at all times a vassal state of the Holy Roman Emperor, its ruler the duke of Bohemia. However, a duke of Bohemia is given the possibility to create the title King of Bohemia once he controls 66% of the provinces which encompass the standard demense of the kingdom (historically). Once that is done, it becomes separate.

Since that is impossible, I believe it would be better to have Bohemia be a relatively disloyal province, with the title of King of Bohemia attached to it (it happened quite often in the middle ages that the Holy Roman Emperor granted one of his trustees that title). It should also be a rich province.

Only in the Hussite Wars did Bohemia truly become independent, and only for a few decades...

According to any map of the medieval period, much of northern Italy, with the important exception of Venice, was part of the HRE. But there is still a seperate Italian faction in MTW. I think for the same reason Bohemia should be a seperate faction, as well as for the fact that they were linguistically distinct.

Hi, everyone. As some of you know, I have been at my cousin's house for the last couple of weeks, and will be back home Sunday night.

I have not had much time to work on the mod, but before I left, I finished everything except de-bugging.

I have worked out the process of the de-bugging, but I won't really be able to work much until I get home.

With de-bugging, you never know when it will end, so it's a wait and see game for everyone right now. I should have the beta ready sometime next week.
Actually, maybe alpha would be a more proper term, since it won't really be playable as a normal game until some willing testers help me work the initial kinks out.
I hope those of you who have helped with the research and so-forth in the past, and/or those of you who have been following the mod's development for the past 8 months or so, will be able to help in this effort.

Right now, the Late campaign is the only one I plan to have working when I first post the Alpha. I chose it because it should not need as many things to be completely right, as would the earlier campaigns.

All of the Readme's and other stats and docs are finished, so no one will be going into this blind, so-to-speak, but you'll defintely need to be familiar with the mod and my aims before volunteering, unless you just want to comment on the stats, which is a legitimate option for a mod this large, even compared to version three.

All the other mod threads are somewhere in the Alchemist Lab, if anyone wants to bump them up.

IMPORTANT NEWS

Got mail from Wes yesterday, se quote below, where he informs me of his health and current situation which simply means that MM v4 will be delayed until further notice. He carefully stated out that he has every ambition to finish this mod and are as eager as us all to play it and will continue working with it when his situation allows. At this stage with the mod I really don´t think any offering of help will do either to complete it faster but rather put more pressure on Wes which I personally think would be unwise. I do know he´d appreciate a funny get well card ;)

Quote[/b] ]Private issues have come up which have forced me to move from my current residence earlier than I had anticipated; today, to be exact. Unfortunately, at this time I don't know when I will be able to finish the mod.

Let everyone know that I have not gotten sicker or anything. In fact, my move should be a big factor in helping me heal faster. I will be able to take my computer with me, and I intend to finish the mod now just as much as ever, I just want to let everyone know that a lot of other stuff may have to be done first. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific than that, it's just that this is about all I know right now.

Please post in the Alchemist's Medmod thread and let everyone know that I'll be gone for an unspecified length of time, but that I will definitely return as soon as I can. I want to play this thing as much as anyone.

Hi, everyone. Long time, no see, huh?
Below is most of an email I just sent, where I lay out the present state of the mod, as well as a couple of other things.

I have started working on the mod some more. I have been learning how to convert the original lbm, the one posted in the thread, to the various bifs. It has been rewarding in that I have learned a lot, but I had just as soon learned it on a future project.
I also went into the original lbm and straightened out the Balkans provinces, where before I had grossly misjudged the location of Belgrade, as well as the border between Bulgaria and ... the province to the north, whatever it's called. I had also messed up the way the provinces fit together in that region. I think everyone will now find it much more realistic, and it excites me whenever I can add authentic realism to the game.
Once I get the maps finished, it'll be back to de-bugging. I have already scanned many of the files visually, but it appears that I will have to take the entire mod out of the game, and place it in piece-meal. This will be a real pain, but there isn't any other option that I know about.

As for playtesting, I'll probably just upload it and post an announcement in the mod thread at the Org, for anyone who wants it.

well, well, I don't know if I'm a tad too late, but if you like and want me to:
I studied history, i'm swiss and i know a lot about our country's history (since my final exam work was about medieval swiss politics). I could help you in that regard if needed /appreciated.
Kudos to WesW, great work

Hey Wes...would you by any chance want a set of music to go with this mod...I have a mess of medieval music on my computer, actual songs and such from the middle ages...mostly european, some islamic though...I could work on a replacement music pack to replace MTW's game music https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

Assuming that Wes wants that in the mod.
I have a variety of music that I gathered together.

I just played the 3.14 version as the Hungarians. I can't make szekely cav, even though in the faction description document it says that this faction should be able to make them. I'm just wondering if this is a known problem or maybe the mod didn't install properly on my computer... or something.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread for this post, but it didn't seem worth it to start a new one just for this.

Szekelys are buildable only in certain provinces, and in none of the starting hungarian provs in early IIRC (correct me if i'm wrong). You can build them in moldavia, kiev, and some other provinces.

Hi, everyone. I want to thank all of you for continuing to write to me. I received this email from Aymar recently, and below I have pasted in my reply, which should answer everything.

Wes

Hi, WesW!!

I've written this up because I have been wondering about your lack of presence and posts at the ORG.

Is everything ok? Or have you had an health problem again?

Best wishes,

Aymar de Bois Mauri

Hi, Ricardo. My health problems had gotten very bad indeed by early September, but since then I have been able to stabilize my condition, and it is much improved. Part of my current treatment is to try and stay away from stressful activities, and unfortunately the pressure to get the mod out was weighing on me, so I have decided to postpone finishing it for the time being. I also figured that, since Rome is already out, few people would be interested in playing mods, for the next few months anyway.
I will finish it someday, rest assured, but it has become clear to me that God wants me to rest and relax until my body recovers from all the stress that I have endured this year, and de-bugging is a frustrating activity that can't help but add to a person's stress. I have gotten all of the key components of the mod to appear individually, so I feel sure that it can be completed as envisioned, it is just a matter of finishing the last parts of the mod and then finishing the de-bugging. Depending upon how things go with my treatments, I plan to finish the mod sometime during the holiday season. I still feel that it is going to blow people away, even those who have been playing Rome. Hopefully I will have the mod out at just about the time the new has worn off of Rome, and people are either waiting for the inevitable patch, and perhaps ready to re-visit Medieval, given that there is something out there worthy of re-kindling their enthusiasm. ;)

1) VI not installed (I think that mod requires it),
2) patch for VI not installed (I think that mod requires it link - http://www.mizus.com/Files/k0rgs8gVt/MTW/patches/VI_201_Patch.zip),

Hi guys.
As I'm interested in Byzantine history I would like to share my knowledge.
I've read that Constantinoples were ignorant to warfare (that's why I would disable all units there except mercenary, Varangians and some weaker units) and most important source of military power was Asia Minor and main reason of disappearance of Kataphraktoi was its loss.
So I would restrict them only to Anatolia and eastern provinces (except Trebizond) and tut their stats on par with Chivalric Knights with SBOW or MTLG and with higher prize and upkeep.
I would also put region bonus in Anatolia to all Byzantine mounted units (probably except Byzantine Cavalry who look like Serbian Mercenary so I would put them bonus in Serbia) and richer (as Constantinople wasn't source of high income because of agriculture, it was Anatolia) to make it worth conquering.
I would also remove barrier between Nicaea and Constantinople, but give Constantinople better defences.
It could be better to rename Imperial Kavalerioi (or WTH was its name) to simple Latinikon and replace maces with lances (Feudal or Chivalric Knights models would be more accurate).
I would also disable Crossbowmen for Byzantines as they used them only rarely and they have enough units using bows.
It could be good to decrease agricultural profit of Constantinople and add other goods there.
Vardariots should be renamed to something else (Serbian or Bulgarian Mercenary comes in mind) as this name represents Royal Guards (together with Varangians who served until 1400 at least (according Osprey)).

I hope this helps to make this cool mod even better. Bye.

prenseslerin kendileri yok. viking i hazırlayanlarmı eksik hazırlamış acaba.

her bölgenin arazisini - toprağını - dağını - taşını gösteren askerlerin üzerinde yürüdüğü yerler yok yani oyunun klasörlerinde kayıtlı
oysa ben her bölgenin tek tek haritası varsa bunları bulup

yada diyelim isveç i devlet yapıp oyuna sokmak falan gibi şeyler.

I don't believe Turkish is related to Hungarian or is it? As far as I know the only languages related to Hungarian would be Finnish and Estonian.

Stop bickering please, bozkirsovalyesi cannot speak English. I don't remember that being amongst minimum specs... Plus, do you want me to find out how many non-English messages have been sent to MedMod related threads?

I don't mind (other) people posting in bad English, after all many of us are not native speakers. Posting in other languages may be justified in some cases. Generally, English is understood by most, and I always suspect those posting in other languages of calling me names etc. ~;) Obviously bozkirsovalyesi has a lot of trouble expressing himself in English. It's nice that someone can help him in his own language.
His English posting is hilarious, though. It really is. (he must have put a lot of effort into it, quite touching)
I think it should be allowed to rofl a bit, there's no apparent malice in those posts.

I don't believe Turkish is related to Hungarian or is it? As far as I know the only languages related to Hungarian would be Finnish and Estonian.
I came up with this cruising among my bokmarks and couldn't stop myself from bumping up the thread. ~;) Our respected mods may wish to split-and-move to the Monastry; I see no point in flooding by posting the same thing twice at this time:

The site looks like a big promise about Hungarian history, language, culture and anthropology but unfortunately a big disappointment equally. Many missing objects, broken links and never-done updates...

Enjoy what's there before they're no more...

well, maybe this isn't being supported/developed anymore, that's cool. but, in case you decide to work on it some more, wesw, i thought i'd share a little problem i'm having with you. i've noticed in the several campaigns i've played that the muslim factions never do well, and are almost always wiped out by 1200. so i decided to play as the almohads and see what was up. a few issues (on an MM early campaign):

1. the almohads can't build fleets in the atlantic! i'm not sure if this is a bug or what, but i took castile, leon, and portugal and was unable to build any type of ship from their shipyards. in the mediterranean i could build the usual dhows (sp?), but nothing in the atlantic. now this became a serious problem once sweden and the danes decided they wanted spain. i fought off several armies up there, and was actually doing just fine, but it sucked that i couldn't protect my ports. when i've played as the european factions, i was able to build ships in africa. in other games, i've noticed that the swedes and/or danes usually attack spain if it falls to the almohads, so this seems to be a systemic problem. is there something wrong with my install or is this normal?

2. maybe another bug, and another reason the almohads fail under AI control: my fleets in the mediterranean don't seem to want to attack other fleets about 50% of the time. i've only really noticed this with the byzantines, but i'll drag my fleet onto theirs, confirm the attack, and next turn, nothing happens.. the same fleets are just sitting in the same sea. once (but just once) a byzantine force invaded algeria seemingly through a protected port. i had a fleet there, so did they, but neither of us attacked and suddenly the byz emperor was in algeria? tunisia and morocco were mine, so they didn't come overland certainly..

3. about the early byzantines: probably not a bug, but aren't the kataphraktoi a little over-the-top? i mean, it's rare to see one with less than 7 command, and they seem to breed like rabbits! were all byzantine emperors renowned for their virility or something? :dizzy2: i almost always play on early, and i understand that the byz are supposed to be strong early and weaker late, but the muslim factions (egypt and turks esp) have to deal with seemingly non-stop waves of these panzers.. the byz eliminated both those factions long before 1190 in this current game i'm playing, btw.

part of the problem with playing as muslim factions is that you don't have the papacy protecting you, like catholic factions do. i think this is why the swedes and danes pounce asap on the almohads. but this isn't a problem, b/c that's how it should be.. no pope to protect, no pope to get in the way. if i could build fleets in the atlantic and could attack the marauding byz fleets (so as to send reinforcments to the eastern front!), it'd be just perfect really (i haven't expanded out of spain, so i don't know if it's just those 3 provinces i mentioned).

well, just curious to know if you're still working on this mod, or if you've moved on to other things. it's a great mod, thanks for making it! ~

p.s. does anyone know how i might be able to fix the ship-building problem? i'm no modder, but if it's a simple txt-file edit, i can probably manage it.

Hi, everyone. I had no idea it had been so long since I had posted here.
Right now, I am enjoying Rome, and advising the EB team as they prepare for their beta release. I just went back and looked at my to-do list for version four, and there is still quite a lot to do; more than I remembered. The tasks are scattered around everywhere, too, and vary from implementing finished graphics to adding additional text code and settings, to debugging.
I have spent several hundred hours on v4, in addition to all the work everyone else contributed, so I still plan on finishing it one day, I just don't know when that will be. These things have a habit of working out in the long run, however.

Well,

In anticipation of 4.0 being finished "one day" I just reinstalled 3.14 and I'm getting a "Unknown faction specified-column 20, row 8- Egyptian" message when I try to run it...hmm..

Think I did everything right-i.e. fresh install, VI patched to 2.01, used the installer default, etc. Any ideas??

Anyway, welcome back Wes! I see you've been giving that buggy Rome thing the once over too. If they don't make use of your expertise they should be thrown to the underfed lions.

Hi wes.
I enjoyed your mod greatly. I hope that 4 will be finished soon.
I made installer of your mod (with uninstaller which restores original Medieval).

I've also made addon which replaces Polish with Bohemians.

I have some ideas about Byzantines and Egyptians.

I disabled Kataphraktoi as Royal unit (and replaced them with Paramonai and Varangians). Because after Mantzinkert Byzantines didn't train them anymore AFAIK.
However, I gave them chance to train them, but only in Anatolia, Rum and Lesser Armenia. I improved them (they are recognised to be best medieval soldiers) and increased their cost and they take 3 years to train.

In Constantinople should be only Varangians and Paramonai (and some weaker units) trainable, because Constantinoples were ignorant to warfare.

I also made Anatolia and Nicea Rebells, because Turks didn't took these provinces immediatelly after Mantzinkert.

Egyptians should have some provinces (especially Antioch) rebellious, because arabs didn't have strong government in this region.

Well hopefully if finished the mod DOESN'T follow Belisarivs's idea in getting rid of Poland to make way for a HRE vassal(Bohemia)!By all means have the Czechs in as well, as certainly had they made different historical decisions they may have maintained independence.

I can't believe what I'm hearing from you guys. The Czechoslovakians WERE Bohemians. The Czechs lived in Bohemia and the Slovakians lived in Moravia. Get your history right before altering your game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohemia

And the Poles had way more influence on the Medeival World than the Bohemians did, so you should instead take out some minor faction.

Well, I live in Czech Republic, exactly in Moravia, but I'm not Slovak, and I'm not even of foreign origin AFAIK. I'm Moravian ~D , as is rather usual in Moravia :laugh4: :laugh4: .

And Czechoslovakia was land of Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia. Czech Republic is just Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia.

In MTW is limit 256 of unit types, which is almost reached in MedMod, so I had to remove some nation. I replaced Polish mainly from these reasons:

Their unit style is close to Bohemian.

They weren't weakest faction, but those weaker (or rather less important) factions use same tech tree as other factions which should be kept in game. For example, I would remove Aragonese, but it wouldn't solve anything unless Spanish are removed, too. You certainly realize, that this would be insane as much as removal of British or French.

Polish main colour is also red and that would be confusing (until Bohemians get some other odd colour) but this isn't such terrible. I could live with Bohemians having same colour scheme as in BKB supermod.

I don't hate Polish, I have nothing against them. In fact I like them, I admired film "With Fire and Sword" and also books of Henryk Sienkiewicz (hopelessly I wrote it correctly) .....

If you suggest other faction to replace with Bohemians I'll be pleased and return Polish to my addon.

Belisarivs, I don't know the answer there. Properly speaking, XL has it right: East-Central Europe is defined loosely by HRE+Bohemia vs. Poland + Hungary. (Yes, there are LOTS of exceptions, but the point is that if HRE invaded, one ally cut the support from the other.

You're right, of course, about the Slovaks: they were living inside Hungary at the time. I really need to take a peek at the text files, it's been a while. The problem is, EVERYBODY's right, from their regional standpoints... I want a highly-developed Central Europe and Balkans, other folks want a highly-developed Iberia, others Northern Europe... but certainly for LATE, it'd sure be nice to have Taborites, don'tcha think?

I agree about Hussites.
But I have to say, that definiton: HRE+Bohemia vs. Poland + Hungary is far to be true.

I have to say, that Germans aren't beloved nation in our country. And it isn't only because WWII. In Middle Ages they were usually (but not still) our biggest enemy. We had to fight all of our neighbours (and very successfully, despite fact that our armies were usually outnumbered).

I cannot agree with this.
Polish AFAIK were in Bohemians shadow at east for first half of the Middle Ages and Bohemian Kings ruled in Poland for some periods of time. Bohemian kings were also campaigning in Poland. Bohemian King also repulsed Mongol Hordes afther they slaughtered Polish and Teutonic Knights. Bohemians were the reason why Mongols didn't pass deeper to the Europe.
Under the reign of king Karel IV (son of John of Luxenbourg AKA John the Blind or Blind King of Bohemia) Prague become true mother of cities with first University in Central Europe.
BTW Karel IV (before he became king) on his campaign in Northern Italy built castle which has his name: Monte Carlo.

But in fact after his death only weak rulers followed and as Poland become more unified, roles of both nations altered. Also Hussite Wars didn't help economy.

Honestly I can't agree. Of course Bohemia was important state - in fact I am still suprised why it wasn't an independent faction like Swiss in the vanilla MTW or in VI, but still I wouldn't claim it overshadowed Poland for more than 50 years and in fact I can argue that Bohemia didn't repulse the Mongols, although I have great respect to its army in Medieval times especially - despite the popular image of Czech 'Swejk' army in Poland.
You could say that when the Poles were like Spanish, Czechs were like Dutch - although there were only few wars between Poland and Bohemia/Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia. And I am glad it was not so bad between us.

BTW Belisarivs - I found out there were national Czech units in the 30 years war - Czech Dragoons fighting even in Gustavus Adolphus army - I will add them to PMTW roster instead of the Bohemian musketeers from 1.0 release.
Could you tell me their name in Czech ( Dragoon - plural, singular) ?

Yes, Belisarivs, I understand very well, but there's also a significant quotient of "when" involved. When the Bohemian King was given the honor fo being Imperial Cupbearer? The fact is that Bohemia often *did* act in concert with the HRE prior to becoming one of the HRE's electorates -- however unwillingly on the part of the lower nobility, as the pretenders to the throne used one power or another to help back their claims.

In my source of informations was written, that Vaclav II after battle of Legno garrisoned passages to Bohemia, but alerted by message that mongols captured Meissen, he marched with his army to meet Mongols there. this allowed Mongols to pass through Moravia and devastate it. After this, Vaclav Ii took his army and allies to Austria and when frozen Danube allowed to be passed, he defeated them. After death of Batu Mongols withdrew.
I don't know how much of this text is true, perhaps Vaclav II didn't battle with Mongols near Danube, but certainly didn't allow them to pass deeper to the Europe through our lands (this is from more sources).

And BTW I think, that Bohemian kings ruled Poland more often than Polish ruled Bohemian.

Swejk wasn't example of Czech army. It was man serving in Austro-Hungarian army in WWI, who pretended he is harmless fool by doing his orders exactly as they were given. In that era Czechs weren't very glad that they have to fight for somebody they hate. This led to desertions to especially Russian army where they formed Czech Legion of elite assault troops and dignified themselves in battles on Russian side and after Great September Revolution (which happened in October ~D) they decided to fight through whole Siberia (which was marked as most magnificent action of WWI in news of these days, as conquest of Trans Siberian Railway slowed down return of captured German and Austrian soldiers to reinforce west front) to return home. From these days dates saying: "Rather fight devil than Czech".

You could say that when the Poles were like Spanish, Czechs were like Dutch - although there were only few wars between Poland and Bohemia/Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia. And I am glad it was not so bad between us.
I must agree. I'm glad too. During Hussite Wars Polish didn't choose to attack fellow Bohemians while others did (they were defeated, but this doesn't matter).

First edition for MTW was released in March or April ( release PMTW 1.0 - there were several earlier). At this moment we are preparing 2nd release and of course working with OiM team on PMTW2 ( RTW), but the second mod is much more complicated, you know...

And I really know about the Czech Legion, but you know the popular images. For example in one of the latest novels of popular polish writer Sapkowski 'God's Warriors' there is much about the Hussite Wars and in one of its rewievs it was written that 'Polish reader has real difficulties in trying to imagine a professional, powerful Czech army crushing lousy German forces at the same time when Poland experiences peace and prosperity'.
Sorry, but popular images are rarely completely justified. ~;)

Poles for example are often disgusted with all this 'polish uhlans charging tanks' stuff - still usual in western historical books :furious3: :duel:

Thanks for the translation !

Is there a glitch in MedMod IV v4? 3.14 works just fine for me, but whenever I try to download and install v4 I can't get it to work. Usually I get a missing faction name error. While the game is loading it stops and I get an error window with the following:

07-16-2005, 01:26
He did, over in the Alchemist's topic. He posted just this morning that he'd solved the CTD problems and the beta was up. It works fine so far; although the mod does really strange things to the Early Era and High Era maps, making them unplayable. The mod is only intended for Late Era play, anyway. The map itself is still off, since he had to change the new province names back to the originals while fixing the CTD problem; but it still works.
