Hi there,

I've been playing Shogun for about 3 years now, so I'm not a TW virgin. But I recently got the Battle edition of MTW, and there's some things that confuse me....

Apart from the souls of my people being damned to an eternity in hell, should I worry about being excommunicated ?(sp?)

How do I get 'Recommunicated'?

How many peasants do I need to garrison somewhere so it won't rebel? Rebellions aren't ever a major threat to my highly trained armies, but they are annoying and force me to divert troops from the front. Places were so much loyaller to a conquering army in Shogun...

I am playing as the English. Its 1225 ish. I control mainland UK (Scotland, Wales, Wesssex, Northumbria, Mercia), and France (+Flanders). Do I go west into Iberia (now controlled by the Almohads), south into Italy (I have Genoa and Milan already), or east into Germany? My armies are quite small, but well equipped and battle-hardened with some great generals (2 valour 6 and loads of 3, 4 and 5 valour generals).

If I think of any more questions, I'll post 'em here.

Thanks for your time http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

First of all, welcome to the ORG, Axeknight http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Second:

Yes, due to the fact of every other Catholic faction being able to get a piece of you (not literally), without getting excomunicated.

Your excomunicated King or the excumunicator Pope has to die.

Well, in Shogun you hadn't diferent nations and different people. The game accuratelly reflects that. They were all Japanese, so changing of allegiance wasn't that far-fetched.

As for the number of peasents for garrison, it depends on the difficulty level and the amount of hapiness buildings you construct (churches or mosques, border forts, etc...).

That really depends on the strenghts of other factions and the most beneficial provinces for you to take. Try to have as few border provinces as possible. It lessens the strain on frontier armies and allows more preparation by having army reserves.

stars matter more than valour for generals.

I would recommend going into Iberia.

you have less borders and Navarre and Aragon is an especially good chokepoint. Provoke a war and the steep mountains will enable you to slaughter the enemy unmitigated and then sweep into the rest of iberia with little resistance and don't stop before morroco.

this and the rest of north africa is only 1 land border, awesome http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Thanks

One more question:

The Almohads seem to have the ability to launch amphibious invasions. They try to conquer England while I'm fighting in Iberia Can I launch attacks by sea? I know I can destroy their boats, but can i put men on my boats and send them behind enemy lines, as they're doing?

I'd definitley agree about going ofter Spain. Its got three iron producing provinces and two provinces which give valour bonuses to ships in the fullness of time. A very good advantage imo, and Katank is definitley right about the choke points.

To launch an amphibious attack, you need an unbroken string of ships between the province you're invading from, and the province you're invading. Any enemy ships break the chain, so just surround your island properly with boats to prevent them from invading. To invade theres, you'll have to sink their ships.

Thanks for the help guys http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Having had a nose around with agents and bishops, the Almohads are a bit tough at the mo' (strongest faction, control most of Africa and Arabia), I've decided to attack 'em when Its possible to win (A great general first seeks victory, then seeks battle - Sun Tzu). I've just invaded and pacified Germany and Denmark. Next stop, Iberia http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

OK, one last question.

How do I hire mercs? I have an inn, I go to 'Train units', then 'Hire Mercenaries'. I select the mercs I want, they go in the 'Creating' bar, and then I never see them. the bar is empty next year....What am I doing wrong?
