This topic is aimed at undisclosing your likes (or dislikes).
It is not exactly a poll, because i expect you to give some kind of explanation for answering yes or no.
The question I rise is : Do you play REAL RPG? and if yes, which ones?
I dont know how nerd you can think I am,but i play(ed) a lot good games like Lord of the Rings,Star Wars,Vampire:Dark Ages and the MAsquerade,7th Sea and some minor ones.
The reason is quite simple,i like being with my buddies, drinking beer and playing in the evenings, and it is also more intellectually sophisticated than watching big brother and the kind, and the last reason is that i like farming my character, observing the way he changes.
OK,im a freak.*sniff* well i cant help it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

By Real RPG do you mean LRP, Live Role Play.
I do this in the Lorien Trust system. I found people knock it before they try it, and it is really fun.
now lets see what kind of person, people think i am?
I used to play V:TM Redemption online quite alot, that was a very fun game. The best times oddly were when action was furthest. Just sitting around in a dimly lit palace in Vienna talking with 6 other people I met not 10 minutes ago. It all just fit so perfect.
Very fun game though. I haven't played many RPGs other than that. Is Diablo considered an Rpg? I played that to.

Thanks for the interest..
I meant Live games, you know, Books, dices, that kind of stuff.
Anyway Vampire:TM on computer wasnt a bad adaptation of the original.

I've been playing D&D since late 1977. Alas, for the past 3-4 years, we've only been able to play 6-8 times a year as most of the players have young kids and we are separated by 60-90 minute drives to get together. But we are still chugging along.

Avid D&D player since 91, with a smattering of other games such as Vampire and Twilight 2000 (the best modern PnP game, in my opinion). Nobody lets me play Vampire anymore since I always play my favorite clan

Wow,we have some experienced players herehttp://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
And having read the previous answers, i had another idea:
Whats your favourite type of character?
I mean,do you prefer a barbaric muscle-man,that shoots first,or a subtle Maquiavelic gentelman, that makes others do the job.
And also,do you start with high attributes and abilities or do you invest in Vices and Virties, and other inborn attributes?
kekvitirae, may i ask which is your favourite clan?
Personally, im inclined for Ventrue and Gangrel...Theyre not very similar, but its good having some variety. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-toff.gif

V:TM, WFRP, and recently been looking at Kill Puppies for Satan.
For Vampire, my favourite clan would have to be Malkavian.

I mainly play a Torrie because nobody else lets me play my favorite clan: Salubri. Their reasons?
1. There are only about 7 of them in the world at any one time.
2. 13th Gen players dont like playing with a 8th Gen player.
3. The majority of the group are Tremere.
I wish they would start roleplaying and stop rollplaying. Heck, I'm mainly a rollplayer, but I would rather rollplay with a well thought out character with background than a pre-generated character sheet with no personality. Heck, my character is mostly a pacifist healer.

I'm into live rpgs since 1995, I've played with many systems (white wolf, tsr, cyberpunk 2020, rolemaster, deadlands), but lately (well, since 1998) I'm playing with a homebrew system and an original setting roughly based on medieval europe. What we are trying to achieve with our system is to discourage power-players (even the most accomplished swordman in our game could be easily dispatched by inferior opponents if outnumbered, attempting d&desque heroic feats invariably result in untimely death of the pc) and encourage role play for its own sake.
I've tried the table version for one evening. The experience was simply traumatising. I'm simply proud of myself for having kept a more or less straight face through the ordeal. I've only seen live RPG on tv and I think I'd rather be caught dead than doing that.
It's not that I look down on those who do this, it's just not for me.

Two thoughts here:
First, given the stigma usually attached to RPGs, I'm surprised to see anyone confess to playing it.
Second is that I suppose it isn't entirely unusual to find that D&D players are the same sort of folk that would hang around these forums.
Ah, those were the days... Not played in a lo-o-ong while, but once upon a time I played The Fantasy Trip, D&D, Rolemaster, Runequest, Call of Cthulhu and GURPS (in approximate chronological order). These days a diaspora of my original RPG friends, three kids and no time mean no playing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif Kudos to Gregoshi for keeping up with it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif
As to embarrassing experiences or attached stigma - well, the first depends critically on a good games master and a sound bunch of players all prepared to suspend disbelief and live another life for a few hours; and the second - well, past thirty you no longer care LOL http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif
Cheers

As a P.S.: having played it seriously with a bunch of mates, pencils and dice I never could get into computer RPGs, even the good ones like Ultima or Might and Magic. Just not the same...
Been roleplaying since 1990 and played many campaigns and adventures. Mainly AD&D, MERP, WFRP, Star Wars, World of Darkness, Call of Cthulhu. Dipped into so many other systems.
Not been playing so much recently as my group has drifted apart. But found some 'new' players and it looks like I'll be able to have a some regular games again. I'm currently looking at running Pendragon (with some inspiration from MTW).
As for the type of character I play...
Anything really, have a fondness of elven rangers in D&D but apart from that my characters are pretty varied - from a wheel chair bound computer programmer to a mindless half-orc killing machine.

I used to play V:TM and the Werewolf one (cant remember the exact name - its been a while).
I quite like V:TM-R on the PC and i'm looking forward to bloodlines.
My favorite clan used to be Gangral but i'd also play Brujah.

I agree, its better to play with a character with a well thought out character with a proper background

I know that feeling...No,you cant do that cos my 14 dices plus Disciplines plus my magic sword bonus is 156,which divided by a critical makes 2000 damage so its death
How many times have you heard that?
Thats why there are some players that are hated by everyone... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif

I'm a 44 year old geek and don't care what others think.
As for embarassing moments, there was the time we were in line at McDonalds and one of the group decided it was a good time for a trip down memory lane...
Tom (in a LOUD voice): Remember that time we killed the guards and put their bodies in the barrels?
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-uhoh.gif
Me (under my breath): Keep it down Tom, these people don't know we are talking about a game.
SwordMaster, are you too young to have remembered the famous Waldo letter in Dragon magazine? I believe it was from the 80's and this guy descibed his wizard Waldo: an absurdly high level with equally absurd powers and equipment. The only detail I recall is that he had a Death Star - yes, the same Death Star from the Star Wars movies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif For several years afterwards, the famous Waldo was mentioned from time to time. I may have to search for it in my Dragon Magazine Archive on CD.

Yes,i suppose im too young(19) to remember that, but i would like to see it if you can post it or add it to the downloads or something...
Anyway the most absurd thing i've ever heard was:
Ok,so the dragons throw flames, right?,so if we throw a barrel of rum into the face of the dragon he will blow himself up (please note the crushing logical reasoning)
That was 2 years ago...

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-laugh4.gif Sounds like the character (or player) was drinking the rum out of the barrel.
I'll see if I can find the letter and post it.
Back on topic, I was fond of elf fighter/magic users when I was a player, but that hasn't been very often. I've been DM for about 23 out of the past 26 years. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif

May well have been Werewolf: the wild west
I was an avid player of Vampire: the masquerade (my brujah rebel was great, rebellious to the pount of telling the local master to shove off and let him kill something) for a few months, then we switched to werewolf, and did several one-nighters of quite a few games, even a few we made up urselves (we had alot of time to kill that we couldn't rp in).
Alas, I moved away and have since never been able to find a group to tabletop with, both me and my g/f would love to with prety much anyone, but here in south wales with no car we are kinda limited, especially having two kids.
So, both of us are avid online roleplayers using freeform messageboard based roleplay cmmunities, mostly on MSN. We've both been doing this for about 5 years and I now manage several of my own. It's a great chance to roleplay, my main character (a 130~ year old wizard) is actually the character I used to tabletop with, though he has changed a lot since then (and he's due to die pretty darn soon).
It is not the same, thats for sure, and it's all written, no dice, no cards or stats, and it relies alot on judgement, common sense and decensy to pull it off, I'm happy to say my groups are free of silly kids coming in with uber-powerfull charcters to kick ass, and have much more thought out characters with inherant weaknesses.
If anyone wants it, the link to my best site is http://groups.msn.com/talesofadventure

as to attached stigma, well have a look at this please. Hopefully it will make you laugh, It may mke you cry and I very much hope it doesn't make you throw away your dice and repent.

Jesus Thats disturbing....How can someone write something like that??
By the way, gregoshi, the player DID drink (whiskey instead of rum),because we used REAL alcohol when the characters wanted to drink to avoid them drinking too often and to avoid them saying(and doing) things like I jump through the window while using the chair to protect myself just after drinking 2 bottles of tequila...
Of course we reduced quatities and everything, because we didnt want anyone hurt...
I've been away from my mates for 8 months(im studying abroad) and i really want to play, its been a loong time...

Just by the way, gregoshi, how did you manage to keep being DM for such a long time...I couldnt manage to get more than 3 more-less consecutive intelligent stories...And the guy that lasted most was for a year and a half....
Is there some kind of secret or you have some special inspiration when it comes to D&D http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif

Bumped so Gregoshi can answer the question...

Okay, okay I'll tell.
Basically, I've been running the same campaign for the past 26 years. First a little history on the players/groups in the campaign. The campaign has had 3 parties start in it. The first was the guys and gal from uni and that ran for 3 years. This party advanced to about 9th level in that time of very heavy playing (about 20 hours per weekend). After graduation, we all went our separate ways, but the characters became NPC in the campaign, so they live on.
I then started a new group from home/work playing in the same campaign but in a different location in the time period just after uni group ended. This group fluxuated in members for about a year and finally settled into 4 consistent players of gradually less and less playing time over several years as we got married and had families. This party also advanced to about 9th level when we began to realize the party was too weak on spell casters for these higher levels. Rather than try to fix the weakness via introducing a new PC or two, they opted to start from scratch again. Thus began start number three. Again, a slightly different location but I advanced the calendar about 5 years to get past a major war that was brewing when the players abandoned their old characters. This new group, like the other two, has advanced to around 9th level, but they are keeping at it now - onward and upward
The basic campaign structure is of the big, bad evil demi-god trying to dominate the world. The key is that the characters aren't aware of their role in the conflict. Most of their adventures have had tie-ins with the overall theme and gradually revealing bits and pieces of the whole picture, but none of the parties so far have even come close to seeing the big picture. Some of their adventures have been one-off adventures with no real relationship to the main theme, but many of the bad guys/monsters they have fought against are major and minor minions of the evil demi-god. For my own enjoyment, I've established these relationships with the goal that some day they will get a glimpse of the big picture and the role they have been playing all this time. But for now, only some of their adventures are related to each other, but only in the sense of their small view of the world.
The current party has estabilished some key contacts with some VIPs which will eventually lead to their greater understanding of the world situation. In addition, they are sitting on a gold mine of information in the form of records kept by a mage they defeated (but didn't kill) who was running a for-hire spy/information network using dopplegangers. I've been gradually feeding the group information they find while researching these records during the times between our game sessions. What they do with the information they learn and what questions it makes them ask will determine how quickly the campaign advances to the main theme.
I've also planned the campaign future so that the group will never directly confront the evil demi-god. They will make their contribution by thwarting his plans and defeating his most powerful minions - of which there will always be another one to replace those killed. I don't have to worry about what happens when they kill the evil demi-god, because they will never get the chance. If they did, the campaign would pretty much be over and I don't want that - like Sauron dying in LotR. I have too much attachment to the campaign at this point to let it die. Besides, at our current rate of play we will all be dead or in a nursing home trying to remember our names long before their characters can even threaten the end of the campaign. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Over the years I've used modules as well as a lot of my own creations. I've also tried not to lead them by the nose through the campaign but rather give them choices of things to do - or at least the perception that they had a choice. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-evilgrin.gif Over the past 10 years I've found my creativity harder to get going and my game day DMing harder to do. This latter is probably due to the sporatic playing we do. You can call me Rusty. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I probably am selling myself short because the players have told me numerous times how much they are enjoying the campaign. One player even compared my campaign to the story arc of Babylon5 - a high compliment indeed. They leave the sessions pumped and frothing at the mouth in anticipation of the next session...until they realize they may have to wait 2-3 months before we can get together again. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
In the past week or two I've started looking at some online RPG tools like WebRPG and OpenRPG in the hopes that if we can play via the internet in the comfort of our own homes, we will be able to play more often. We shall see.
Anyway, thus ends this long and rambling tale. Aren't you glad you asked?

Was a fanatical D&D player from 1977-1984. Me and some friends also started a club in college and roleplayed Risk on an old schoolmap of the world with tinsoldiers, cavs and arty. We RP great commanders like Napoleon, Wellington, Gustavus Adolphus etc etc.
Got my first personal computer in 1986 (IBM) so I guess that´s why I stopped RP ordinary games and started RP my computer games instead.

Hahahaah, yeah, long post, but very enjoyable.
BTW, if you have a look at Tales of adventure (the link is at Sociopsychoactive's post) and go to GENERAL and then VAMPIRE, were having the same problem for playing online, mostly because of the dicerolls and keeping track of the character profiles,so if you find something helpful or have some advice, it will be appreciated...
I dont remember the last time i played D&D, but in Lotr We never ever had a spellcaster, but we had a VERY good archer and a VERY brutal axeman, so we opposed the spellacsters quite effectively until they were powerful...Then we made new characters http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif
