I am playing my first Viking campaign as the Vikings and I can't quite figure out how to destroy buildings during a battle. I have two problems:
1) During an invasion, there are no buildings at all on the battlefield, other than a few houses, even though I know the province has several buildings in it on the campaign map.
2) During a siege, after breaching the gates, I had one of my units attack the church to try to destroy it. They hacked and hacked at it until time ran out, but it never got destroyed.
What am I doing wrong? I did notice that after the battle on an initial invasion the computer advised me that I had plundered 2000 florins, but that seems to be random to me, as I did not notice that any buildings were destroyed.
Please help...
you`re not doing anything wrong at all. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
what building you see on the strategic map and on the battlefield are NOT related in any way.
this topic was discussed some time back, but i can`t remember if the plunder you recieve is derived at ramdom or is related to the prosperity/size of the province and the size of the invading force.
just keep on raiding all those tasty provinces and you won`t go too far wrong http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
happy plundering http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

i forgot to tell you how to destroy the buildings
just follow katank`s directions below. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif
the plundering by detroying buildings occur only on the strategic map.
your actions on the battlefield does NOTHING.
it's ironic how in castle assaults, you pound the castle to dust and then capture it intact whilst if you starve them out, you lose everything.
after you take the province, click on the province and the buildings there should show in the review panel.
right click them to call up the parchment and click on destroy.
some are auto destroyed and plundered when you take the province while some may still be intact.
you get 1/2 of the money from the construction cost but you get full as the vikings to emphasize their plundering expertise, hence ludicrous plunder. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

On the battlefield, if you want to have some fun destroying buildings for the sheer joy of it, archers do a nice job on wooden structures with their fire arrows. Just target the archers on the building and they will do the rest. Infantry can tear down walls, but I've noticed that they take a very, very long time on some structures to the point it isn't worth it if you have the battle timer turned on. Ballistas can do an okay job on taking out houses, but I'm not sure they are in the Viking campaign.

I might be wrong on this one since I haven´t documented it but it seems that destroying all buildings on a battlefield and castle map DOES get me higher pillaging income. When I started to play the VI game I didn´t destroy anything and usually got around 2-4000 fl. from pillaging. Nowdays I destroy everything on both maps and get around 3-6000 fl.
What one should really do to determine this is qiuck-save the battle and try out both methods in 10-20 battles to see the difference.
Goofball The fastest way of destroyong buildings is, believe it or not, using archers I always bring atleast 6 units, sometimes more, into a battle/ siege.
6 archer-units will open the gate in just two blasts, destroy a house in one and level a church or a warrior hold to the ground in 7-9 blasts. Quick, clean and efficient
Archers are useless though on castle-gates and castles. You´ll need siege-weapons for thoose. But there really aren´t that much castles in VI.
could this be because of faction or provinces?
if you play a viking campaign, you get double the florins from plunder.
also, if you are lucky enough to hit an abbey province, that's 2k right there if viking and 1k otherwise which can also skew results.
the plunder of same province by destroying in both might be interesting though. maybe I'll try dat.

The good news is that I think they have changed this for Rome Total War. I seem to recall someone saying that buildings in your provinces will alter the battle map, and buildings destroyed during battle will remain that way when you return to the campaign map. If true this is a great leap forward
Now if they would just make it easy for human generals to play out the battles (which were developed in the campaign) in multiplayer mode, and then reload the outcome back to each players machine, it would also be a great leap forward into making a multiplayer campaign a reality.
Gotta keep dreamin....
yep, gotta be able to have multiplayer campaigns. RIght now, I think the best you can do is use the -ian thing for the strategic level and then fight the battles in MP but only with 16 units.
the latter is the real limitation IMHO as I think the best alternative to having multiple waves is to use comp controlled allies but they are really stupid.
