View Full Version : Famous kings! Why doesnt they work?!
Whats the deal with Famous kings in DEFAULT_HEROES.txt?
The only king that is actually given the stats and vices from the list of FAMOUS_KINGS is the king that each faction start with, all following kings are random
It isn't supposed to be like this, right?
If I get it right it works like this (the following goes for the second in the list): the 1st king with name 0 (Henry I) is supposed to get c:2, d:4, p:4, a:7 and vnv: lawman1.
And the 1st king with name 7 should get c:3, d:4, p:3, a:4 and vnv: vaccilator1.
Am I right?
FAMOUS_KINGS:: FN_ENGLISH 12
//name no. c d p a portrait vnv
4, 2, 3, 7, 3, 4, -1, tyrant2
0, 1, 2, 4, 4, 7, -1, lawman1
7, 1, 3, 4, 3, 4, -1, vaccilator1
The thing is it doesnt work. For example, Henry I doesn't have the right states or vices.
Anyone know a way to fix this or are all famous kings useless??

You can edit all stats and portraits for your Famous Kings, and even choose which one will be your starting King. I've tried it with numerous Kings from several different faction lists, and it always works.
However, I have yet to figure out how succession works. So if my 2nd Famous King is named Henry, and the current King has an heir named Henry, it doesn't necessarily use the Henry from the FK list. So I still don't know when or even if it uses the other Kings from that list.
I did notice that the English Kings are in historical order, from William II to Henry V, with the exception of Richard II, who is missing altogether. Their v&v also seem to somewhat match their historical personalities (William II is a Tyrant, Henry I a Lawman, Richard I a Mighty Warrior, Henry V a Great Leader, etc.) So it would seem that they should appear in succession; Henry I should follow William II and so on.
Since I'd love to know the answer to this, I'm going to post the question in the mod forum. Will reply back if anyone bites.

Just remember that the kings can die,and if one of his heirs is death on the battlefield,or burnt by inquiz,or assasinated ,he cant be king anymore...
And also,if your king participates in battles and leads assaults,his son will probably develop useful V&vs,while if hes sitting at home, he will be drunk,and the like... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif
I restarted a campaign with the french three times (it took to long for the english to get a famous king) and the first prince (that later became king) was different all the times.
This is from the DEFAULT_HEROES.TXT:
FAMOUS_KINGS:: FN_FRENCH 12
//name no. c d p a portrait vnv
3, 1, 2, 3, 2, 7, -1, secret_avarice3
0, 6, 3, 6, 3, 4, -1, gluttony2
3, 2, 4, 6, 4, 5, -1, zealot3
Which means:
FAMOUS_KINGS:: FN_FRENCH 12
//name no. c d p a portrait vnv
Philippe I 2, 3, 2, 7, -1, secret_avarice3 (starting king in early period)
Louis VI 3, 6, 3, 4, -1, gluttony2
Philippe II 4, 6, 4, 5, -1, zealot3
The first prince to mature is Philippe and he becomes king Philippe II when his father dies.
He should be: c: 4, d: 6, p: 4, a: 5, vnv: zealot3
This is his stats and vices for all three times:
- c d p a vnv
(1) 1 2 2 2 great warrior, chainless wonder
(2) 4 3 2 4 natural leader, secret perversion
(3) 1 2 1 1 natural leader, secret pride
And that is way wrong

Lysarin:
Starkhorn replied to post in mod forum. He provides a link to his guide, which apparently answers your questions. Here's the post:
http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin....y254844 (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=16429;st=0;r=1;&#entry254844)
I've downloaded it but haven't read it yet. If you test it before I do, please reply here and let me know what happened. Good luck.
I'm interested in the answer to this question as well. I quickly looked through Starkhorn's post (excellent guide, btw), but I didn't see anything that directly addressed this question of succession.
I've tested this a few times as the HRE in early. The oldest starting prince for the HRE is named Conrad, who becomes Conrad III when his father dies. Conrad III is listed as one of the HRE famous kings in DEFAULT_HEROES.txt, so one would expect the newly crowned Conrad III to have the stats/v&v listed in DEFAULT_HEROES.txt. Unfortuately, he doesn't... at least not in the half-dozen tests I've tried.
Has anyone ever had one of these famous kings emerge during a campaign? It would be a real shame to have this stuff built into the game but not properly implemented.
I assume it doesn't work. I've tested it many times with no results. I think that the kings besides the first are useless. I have a theory that I forget if I tested or not. Like for example (not proper, made up names) Henry V might be the starting king for Late. If you modify the Henry V entry in DEFAULT_HEROES it might change his starting stats. Now mind you this is just an untested theory I'll try later, but right now I'm off to play Battlefield:Vietnam. I might test my theory tomorrow or later tonight though. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-builder.gif

Now, that´s a really interesting question which I´ve asked myself on more than one occasion. Can´t wait to see what you guys comes up with.

I think this would work... I've added a new faction to my campaign (The Swedish) and made 25 historical kings for them and at the beginning of the campaign they start with a king from DEFAULT_HEROES but after him they seem to be random (which is really annoying since I've done 22 kings that are useless).

I know. I did at least a dozen kings for the Germans and the same amount for England and have yet to see any but the first. Frustrating, since it took alot of time to research and add historical stats and v&vs, and even try to pick somewhat historical protraits for each.

Oops sorry I had mis-read the original questions from Plantagenet in the dunegeon forum and yes the guide doesn't answer that question.
I had always thought that the famous kings section worked sequentially. For example for the French you have the below.
FAMOUS_KINGS:: FN_FRENCH 12
//name no. c d p a portrait vnv
Philippe I 2, 3, 2, 7, -1, secret_avarice3 (starting king in early period)
Louis VI 3, 6, 3, 4, -1, gluttony2
Philippe II 4, 6, 4, 5, -1, zealot3
So Philippe I starts in early campaign and his heir in the early campaign is always Philippe II but he doesn't get the famous king stats.
Well I had always assumed this was because the system was waiting for a first-born son called Louis, who would then get the stats for Louis VI. then the game would wait for the first-born son called Philippe. It didn't matter that there had been a Philippe II before a first-born Louis appeared because the Famous Kings section works sequentially.
The important thing to remember is the First-born status.
That was what I had always thought but I will admit to never having effectively tested it before.....
might try to get it a go this weekend.
Will be quite shocked to learn that it ain't implemented properly.....
Cheers

See the Conrad II -> Conrad III example I posted earlier in this thread. That's a textbook example of a sequential succession of famous kings, but it doesn't seem to work... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

I've tried it several times too. Either we're both missing something, or it just doesn't work.
However, if the latter is indeed the case, why would CA waste all that time to enter dozens of Famous Kings for each faction? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
I don't know why they don't work but I don't think they do. But I do you know can modify the starting kings of High and Late. For example I wanted to do a High French GA campaign. I looked to see that Phillipe II was the king. I went and found Phillipe II in DEFAULT_HEREOS and changed zealot3 to zealot4. It worked. So you can modify the 3 starting kings at least.

Interesting topic, I was wondering about this too.
Now, I think it simply stopped working since the patches came out, possibly since VI 2.00, because I remember seeing the custom pics of Barbarossa and Lionheart in the SP campaign of MTW 1.0 and probably 1.1 too..but since then, they've never ever appeared again even though I had the corresponding princes become king. A random element can (almost) be ruled out since I have played lots of campaigns where I had the matching kings but neither protrait nor according stats.

I was writing an editor program for all this, but I got sooo sick of banging my head on my monitor http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif
I gave up.... I might just resurrect the project if you think it's worth it?
