View Full Version : Tone down Jedi generals?
Hi folks,
This Jedi general thing is doing my head in. There I am, sweeping the decadent lapdogs of the Byzantine emperor out of Asia Minor, and in one particular battle in the strategically vital Trebizond region the Byz are down to one Kataphraktoi general. Just one, surrounded by Nubian spearmen to the front and Saracens to the rear and peppered by Desert Archers to boot. And he keeps on going, slaughtering about 100 spearmen, putting them on the verge of routing. I mean, I've got near 500 men left standing and he's one, and I nearly lost. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-no.gif
I'm happy to have heroic generals, don't mind the odd slayer-of-dozens, but this is simply unrealistic. In an otherwise excellent simulation engine, this is a major flaw. Even the finest knight in Christendom (well, Orthodoxy) on the best-trained destrier with the heaviest barding will go down unsupported and surrounded by guys five ranks deep with big pointy sticks. He wasn't even a Byzantine super-heir, just a 2* Kataphraktoi troop-leader

Sorry for the rant, but this really annoys me; it's at the level of serious game flaw for me. Does anyone know of a simple mod or tweak that will tone down the effects of generals' valour on their hitpoints? I know this has been discussed recently but I couldn't track down any answers.

Seriously, what you described was a fluke. That won't *ever* happen again for a long long time, though it's pretty frustrating when it does. Oh yeah, also, get some good attack units to take out the kataphract. He should only have 7 hp (2 star + 5 general base hp), so attack him with ghazis or something. Spearmen are horrible, cause they have waaaay too low attack.
However, I think the general hp stuff is hard-coded, so there is no way to directly mod it.
try using high attack units after pinning with spear.
also, use javs, x-bows/arbs, naptha, artillery on it.
armour piercing stuff take down armoured beasts like katanks better.

This is probably just a rationalization, but ....
I wonder if the AI is trying to capture him.
This occurred to me while watching one of these 500 to 1 battles. I mean, if the guy's worth 1,000 florins, maybe the AI isn't all that eager to kill him.
I think he said a simple unit leader so not even worth much, maybe a few hundred but not 1k though.
capturing is interesting though for capturing, just autocalc. I always have better shot of capture when autocalcing.

In a played out siege, all unit inside the castle will fight to thier death, so you got way better chances to cature the king if auto-calcing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
no they don't they most likely do because of no retreat +8 morale but some peasant class units just rout around and around the fort and get captured/ cut down

LOL most definitely agree with katank.

well, my unit 200 slavs, peasant, and UM in a fort when assaulted by a force of boyars, archers, rus spear, armoured spears, and vikings did that.
the firs thing i knew, BOOM the walls come down. Then I maneuver the slavs over only to see two units of boyars and some blood thirsty vikings rumbling towards them with archers providing cover fire and spears marching over to join the fray.
My slavs melted upon contact and my entire army decided to rout but had nowhere to rout to so started going around and around the fort, getting chased and cut down by the boyars like so many little flies.
I was laughing so hard I didn't care that these were my troops dying in this funny way. I continued cracking up when I saw they killed only 9 men
Still laughing, I refused the worthless bums' ransom and let them die so my other soldiers would know to not rout as if they don't fight honourably, they don't get ransomed when captured http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

@Ulair: I've never heard of any mod that tones jedi down, and I rather doubt one exists. The whole mechanics of hitpoints is inside the game engine, not in a moddable file.

It's most likely that they was 1 cm outside the walls with one unit. Then they rout. And even if they do rout, good luck getting the king to rout. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I can point out that I actually meant the inner area around the keep.
I don't know why but I found I captured more kings before the 2.1 VI patch and when I played on easy or normal.
autocalcing gives you the best chance of capturing.

Man I hate the lone general unit. I once wasted 17 Royal knights (my 7 star KING) on a 4 star enemy general. I've also had around 150 spearmen slaughtered and 3 of my units routed before I finally killed the general. One word - REDICULOUS
