I have got to the stage in making the scots a faction where I have assigned FN_FREE21 to make the kings unit early royal knights and have assigned fn_free21 to all units that I want the scots to build.
I have play tested the mod and it works so far. BUT, now that I have implemented the changes noted above I keep getting unrecognised faction messages and the game wont load.
colounm 28 row 97 to be exact.
row 97 is early royal knights.
everything was fine till this point, what have I done wrong???

Yea, I think I did.
I was following starkhorns guide and everything was fine until this point. I really anticipated no problems, grrr.
Assigning factions to units is easy stuff I dont understand this at all

I'm using a direct copy of the VI crusaders_unit_prod text file and the Scots are working perfectly as Highland Clansmen for royal units.

Trouble is I want royal knights.
the game is recognising the faction scots, will allow me to build any unit that is ALL_FACTIONS but I still cant add FN_FREE21 for specific units.

Well it should work fine if you followed the guide. Send us your declarefaction line and also cut and paste column28, row 97 from the unit file.

thx for your offer of help starkhorn.
DeclareFaction:: "FN_FREE21" Is this what you meant?
As mentioned before, adding FN_FREE21 to the crusader unit file will not let the game load so at the moment it is as it should be so I can play the game.
Also, as I mentioned, the mod is working, ie-I can get to the campaign select screen, choose scots campaign and start playing without any probs-it is just the crusader file that is the prob.
This is what is so annoying, your guide was easy to follow and I am pretty experienced at modding units, I dont get why this isnt working-at such a late stage of a mod...

Yeah this error is annoying and everytime that I got it, it was due to a typo somewhere or something not quite in the correct format in the crusader file.
So paste to us exactly what you've got in your crusader file in row28 column 97. It's hard to check for typo's when I can't see what you typed. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif
Also give us the exact error as well and when exactly you get the error, i,e, when you startup mtw etc.
Also what have you set to be you leader's starting unit ? Paste that column/row as well.
Cheers

I just posted the entry for early royal knights starting at its build requirements, I thought that might be easier.
The error was at the load up point. a box with FN_FREE21, unknown something or other. Apologies for being vauge but kekvit was helpin me by sending a whole new scots file but that isnt workin either at the mo So I am juggling with two mods at the moment.
At the moment the starting leader is un-assigned-defaulting to highland clansmen (which isnt so bad for scots).
Also, in kekvits mod the game wont recognise custom0 file in the textures/men directory (i assume it just sits in the men directory along with the peasant directory)
{ROYAL_COURT} EARLY NO "HEIGHT( 125 ), RADIUS( 50 ), SCALE( 138 ), PROJECTILE_TYPE( NONE ), SAMURAI( YES ), MARCH_SPEED( 9 ), RUN_SPEED( 20 ), CHARGE_SPEED( 22 ), MIN_TURNSPEED( 2 ), MAX_TURNSPEED( 8 ), TURN_TO_MOTION_SPEED( 8 ), MAX_INMOTION_TURN( 96 ), FORMATION_WIDTH_SPACING( 115 ), FORMATION_LENGTH_SPACING( 125 ), ENGAGEMENT_THRESHOLD( 2000 ), CHARGE_BONUS( 8 ), MELEE_BONUS( 4 ), DEFENCE_BONUS( 3 ), ARMOUR_LEVEL( 4 ), HONOUR_LEVEL( 8 ), AMMO( 0 ), FORMATIONS_PREFERRED_NUM_ROWS( 3 )" NO "own_unit_tooltip1, own_unit_tooltip2, other_unit_tooltip1, other_unit_tooltip2" HORSE "MAILHCAV, YES, YES, LiHorse" "FN_ENGLISH, FN_FRENCH, FN_GERMAN_HRE, FN_HUNGARIAN, FN_ITALIAN, FN_PAPIST, FN_POLISH, FN_SICILIAN, FN_SPANISH, FN_DANISH,FN_ARAGONESE, FN_BURGUNDIAN" "FN_ENGLISH, FN_FRENCH, FN_GERMAN_HRE, FN_HUNGARIAN, FN_ITALIAN, FN_PAPIST, FN_POLISH, FN_SICILIAN, FN_SPANISH, FN_DANISH,FN_ARAGONESE, FN_BURGUNDIAN" "Missile, Shocktroop, Spear, Cavalry" "SKIRMISH(0), ADVANCE_PARTY(1),

That's because in my mod, custom0 is reserved for the Knights of Saint George. custom1-7 are the renamed BIF files

Well there is no mention of the FN_FREE21 in the royal knights line so that can't be the problem.
Where exactly have you put the FN_FREE21 in the crusaders file ? BTW, I assume you are using the gnome editor to edit the crusaders file ? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif
I know it's obvious and it's in the pre-requistes but some people don't actually read that part.
Also re-read section 3.2.1, specifically the below paragraphs.
"So add the below line at the end of the above list. It’s important you do it at the end of the list, read the comments to find out why, infact for all of the sections in this file ensure to add the lines for our faction at the end of each section. Close and save dutch.txt once you’ve added the below line.
DeclareFaction:: "FN_FREE21"
Open the Early.txt file. Scroll down to the DeclareFaction section and add the line above to declare FREE21 as a faction. Close and save this file. Do the same thing in the High.txt and the Late.txt."
The important line is the last one. Is FN_FREE21 declared in the high and late.txt as well as these scenarios use the crusader file too.
Cheers
