…or least give us an option to turn them off so the newbies can have them.
Really – in every screenshot – they are WAY too large and really take away from immersion. In fact their absence may add some nice “fog of war” once the day glo colors are tune down a bit.
Time Commanders looked quite nice without them and I truly can't see what they add to the party.

What they add? Recognisability. This way you can easily click the big flag for a unit, like in MTW. Personally I like it, it's a lot better than those crappy MTW banners.

I don't mind them at all but the ability to turn them off would be a really nice touch, especially for people looking for a more realistic experience. Without those massive banners towering over the troops playing in that 'general's eye view' command mode mentioned in a recent preview article is going to be particularly harrowing experience. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I like them. They look better than the previous flags. I think the game should come with an option to turn pretty much everything on and off, so those who have a problem with everything can make the game as they please.
In Shogy the banners were fine. In Medieval were an eye-sore. Now .. I don't even know anymore http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif

I do recall seeing unit banners in the last episode (Marathon). You just didn't see them in all shots. I believe most things we see on the TC are derived from the large screen which doesn't show the banners, while the small monitors do.
There most certainly are banner in at least Raphia. I like them. Well, they are not perfect but I like their look given their limitations. And I want the banners in.
STW banners were great... They looked like something drawn from history. MTW was not good at all, but I never thought much about it.
The banners seen in Raphia are rather small, not the giants seen in other shots. In fact they seem smaller than the MTW version and quite a bit more beautiful.

I should have been clear here;
There are indeed banners in TC - but only on the small screen - not on the large one.
And yes, I agree that the STW banners were quite appropriate to the period. However, the banners we've seen to date in R:TW are neither appropriate to the period or aesthetically pleasing.
In addition, I for one want as much realism as possible in the tactical battles and the banners detract from that.
Just give me an OFF option and I will be happy.

Actually it's only when the battle goes to full view when the banners dissapear, I've seen them frequently on that main screen where the beamer projects what happens on the PC of the guy behind the strategy table. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

they only look huge because most screenshots are zoomed all the way in... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-surprised.gif
I have no problem with the flags, but it would be nice if you turn them off or have a slider for size or something.
lol i was just thinking about this a few days ago.
i agree, there should be a feature that lets you turn banners on or off, sometimes those banners just block the view :p.
or if your going to have banners make it so SOMEONE is actually holding it O.o; and if the banner carrier dies someone picks it up and moves on :p, didnt they have those in roman times? like akaik the roman banner was like a sacred thing to an army >_

Tarrak, the solution for returning to the good old samurai banners is to try and make these historically accurate also; not unicolored flags with a simbol on them, but what they really used; and they used standards
So lets give the romans only aquilas (sp), the gauls tribal simbols, but not flags, more spears with totems I think, teh dacians (well, I had to say it) the famous dracones, the egyptians .. don't know, what ever they had as simboles, and I don't think those were flags.
I was playing last night Toyotomi Hideyoshi's historical campaign (don't know what got into me) and I couldn't help noticing how real all those soldiers seemed, even if they were perfectly aligned when compared with those ugly units of Medieval

Observe Roman units in screenshots and movies. They have the unit flags, and the unit leader carries their personal standard. I've yet to see the aquilifer, though. :\

I agree the option to remove the big banners should be included... The Smaller Unit standards should remain.
In time Commanders I didn't notice that there were not any large banners, but that didn't detract from any of the action. You could still easily identify troops by unit colour, and that works best I think.
The day-glo colors and the oversized banners are indeed intrusive. I have always disliked Total War's insistence upon over bright unit colors. They are a constant reminder that the game is trying too hard to facilitate our control by making the factions painfully different looking.
Small, colored banners are all we need. Every soldier doesn't need to be green or blue.

Wait a minute...
I am possibly one of the worst Total War players around here.
I need those unit flags...
"Now where did my general get to?"
"There's his standard surrounded by lots of bad-guy flags..."
"Oops."
Without those standards I would have a much harder time controlling the battles, or at least trying to control the battles.
Have them as an option to turn on or off.
Or better yet have the option of making them huge with writing on them like...
"Hey dummy, this is your general, don't get him killed."
"Warning, not designed for Braveheart-style tactics."
"Caution, will not rise from dead so keep them alive"
or my favorite
"Front, point towards enemy."

flags will be staying, if I recall some long ago post in STW its about the needs of people with less than perfect color vision.

Everybody is all upset about the banners, but not a mention of the radioactive feet of selected troops? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif (And yes, it's still there, I saw it in the TC Marathon episode)
And think about this- How else do you propose to select individual units when they are in a melee with several other units of yours? Simply click upon the men? Practically impossible. The unit banners should stay.
Indeed, the banners are needed. But they don't need to be garish or huge.

The Standard is a must for me ... and anything else that makes the battle more realistic and less gamey

I think after seeing the newest screenshots, the banners look fine. The flags representing "valour", however, do seem a bit large. I do like how the flag is floating though, and not impailed through the unit leader.
guys, in MTW/STW, down in the bottom of the screen, see those rectangular shapes that have the unit icon in em? see em? well you can double click em and you will automatically zoom in on that unit.
seriously, there should be an on or off feature. so everyone is happy.

Yes, but we don't always know where which unit is... We know what unit is somewhere. I have actually tried to use that feature a lot, but often I have selected other units. That is why I rely on the banners when it comes to melee.
(and to Aelwyn)
The valour banners seem big because they are about the size of STW honour banners. There was a bit of complaining in the beginning about the size of the MTW valour banners from both MPers and SPers. Perhaps they listened to that.
But if people want the banners to go, then fine, make it optional. It would be an interesting way of making te game harder once it has been mastered.
