View Full Version : Citadel and large castle defense...

Golden Horde just arrived with well over 25k troops. I got a great saved game with their arrival and a cool citadel with barbican defense. One of these days I'm gonna put my saved games just before cool castle defense battles online for others to play if they want.

On to my question. When the Horde first arrived, there was massive damage done by the castle towers. However, once the outergate fell, it seemed like not as much damage was being done. My troops were just on the other side of the outer gate, keeping them in a bottleneck and from advancing.

Do the outer towers stop firing once the outer gate is breached? If so, it would seem best to keep some troops outside the castle to keep the outer gate from falling thus allowing the full damage of the castle to be done.

Can anyone shed light on this? I lost that battle, but I did kill a good 10,000 troops. :)

Not sure, but its likely. 'Cause if, in reality, the outer gate fell, the attackers would surely kill every one in the towers (who hadn't run already). After all, they could get behind your (the attacker's) lines and countercharge your men sandwiching them between the gate and the tower-troops.

Don't take this as a firm 'Yes' though, this is purely speculation on my part http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I just fought a castle defense battle against the GH. I think the outer walls stopped firing whenever the Mongols were inside those walls. When I killed and routed all the Mongols who had gotten inside the walls, then the outer walls started firing again.

I also noticed that the Gate defenses seem to run out of hot oil and rocks at some point. I don't know if there is a finite limit to them or if the amount of damage to the gate has some threshold that was reached.

There may be also some effect on the towers too, caused by the amount of damage done to them. Is the amount of fire from the towers reduced by the amount of damage to them? It does seem like it does...

I too noticed the catapult towers stopped firing. It also seemed like the outer arrow towers stopped firing too.

I'm not sure if it was because they ran out of ammo? Or if it was because the outer gate was broken.

My Outer Gate was broken too, but all the arrow towers kept firing as long there were no Mongols inside the gate. I wonder though, if the amount of fire from the towers is reduced according the amount of damage they have taken.

My ballista towers were never damaged at all, but they stopped firing after awhile, so maybe they ran out of ammo?
