View Full Version : Night Ambushes?
you know how the game will have the day change on the battle field, well have any of you heard anything about night ambushes, where you send archers in and burn down a fort, in the middle of the night.
please answer.
thanks, dessa
But they've announced this since a long time now .. adn at the .com we had options for units like the German Night Raiders. I don't think there are others who know more on this, but it is enough to be sure that night raids will be in http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

Night battles, but not necessarily night ambushes...
...cause we got no problem with ambushes in the morning

I do my ambushing after breakfast. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
it's just that ambushing at night might, advantage a team.
in covert operations, like secretly going and burning down a major fort, and then attack the next day and destroy the undefended enemy.

I think I read somewhere that we will not be able to select the time of battle. If it's true so there will be no "night ambushes" but just "ambushes" that can last till night come.
I have another question about ambushes in strategy map. Maybe somebody know the answer. How will it work? Will the ambushers just appear suddenly on map and then we'll have common battle but "trapped" troops will get reduced moral? Or will we have real ambush in battle level: the "trapped" troops are marching along the road and ambushers suddenly attack from forest?

Maybe the ambushes meant that you can force march soldiers and surprise them. thus creating an ambush. Or As the German units, you can hide them in a forest, and when a army comes marching past, you can ambush them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-gossip.gif
Ok, we can have nightbattles and we can have ambushes, that is known for sure. We do not know if we can have night ambushes, but it is a logical conclusion. So I believe that we will see night ambushes.

How will the archers work at night?
its not that those oil lamps are powerful enough as to illuminate a 100 yard shot...

Maybe send a flaming pig in the direction of the enemy. Kind of like a live torch. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
On a serious note though, I think a volley of 1000 fire arrows would be quite spectacular at night. Imagine the chaos it would cause to start raining thousands of them down on an unsuspecting enemy encampment. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

BUT the ARCHERs DONT see what they are aiming at.So you could fire that spectacular volley targeting your own troops. Spectacular yes, smart,no.
What i thought is that your skirmishers should be able to put torches int the ground just outside the range to illuminate the enemy when they approach...

The Archers can't see to shoot?
We are talking about night time here, not standing in the Middle of a Pea Souper.
You have to remember that archers don't need to be accurate they just need to launch a volley in the direction of their target... and I doubt a massed army of men gathering in a field 100 meters ahead is going to go unseen.
At any rate people's eyes adjust to the dark, if you spend some time in an open field at night you will be able to see objects ahead of you. (and even more so if the moon is out)
True visability is impaired and there will be a loss of accuraccy, but it won't matter that much
Besides the enemy could be carrying torches... (and no I don't mean ones with Duracell batteries)

The archers would probably know how far away the enemy camp was, anyway, so they could just launch a volley of arrows which they know will land say, 300 yards away. They'd most likely be able to hear the enemy too.
