View Full Version : Arrows from castle walls?

I was just playing around with artillery and castles and noticed that even the castle walls are firing arrows at my crews. Just curious if anyone knows at what level of damaged they are rendered unable to do so. Or, if they must be completely destroyed to stop.

Welcome, POISON ARROW. Hope you enjoy the ride with us. I ran a test not too long ago, because I seemed to have the same problem. Went against a castle with, I believe, three defenders. I took in my General's unit of Chivalric Knights and fifteen culverins. I also set the no limit on missles and time. I proceeded to level every tower, all walls, opened all gates, and even destroyed the keep. Left one defender to attack. I still lost a couple of knights to fire, from I know not where. I don't know if this is a glitch or what. Hopefully, someone else does and will respond.
BTW, the lone defender wasn't even a Jedi http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
I'm under the impression that the walls stop firing when the first chunk gets broken off. That can be 25%, 33% or 50% damage depending on the type of wall. It would also make sense because the archers no longer have a proper place to stand upon. These whateveryoucallthoseholesinthewallsthatyoufirethrough also tend to get destroyed with the first chunk. I recently broke all but the last part of some walls and used that last remaining part as a cover for my archers that peppered the defenders on the inside. My archers took no casualties despite spending a lot of time there. Lord Ovaat's example is therefore rather surprising to me.

just use peaseants as fodder to protect your crews and set there formation to loose so you dont lose as many men in theory they can avoid/dodge the missiles in this mode rather than tight formation etc. as theres not much you can do about it but just put up with it? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The whateveryoucallthoseholesinthewall are embrasures or loop-holes, depending on time period and use. I believe that test experience of mine was just a glitch, but don't know for sure.
Do a search on castle in this forum or the Main Hall. There's lots of posts on this subject.

I thought it was called crenellations.
yep, the arrow towers stop firing when destroyed but the central keep arrows always shoots until the castle falls.
These don't even have a range limit and are fully lethal IIRC.
they do seem to target nearest units though so use peasants as others suggested.

crenals are the up...down...up part that follow the very top of the wall, loopholes are in the wall itself

i think the keep stops firing once it gets destroyed (doesn't happen very often unless you have plenty of gunpowder artys) i always destroy it when i can, specially with NTW in which artys are sic good.

crenellations are the square blocks placed at short intervals along the top of the wall giving it the zig zag sorta shape.
