Welcome Barraba http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
You need to move one of your stacks onto the castle you're trying to attack. The stack icon will change from a knight just standing there to (I think it looks like) a knight swinging a sword. That means that army has a mission. That will force a battle between you and the castle. You can still auto-calc it, once you get a chance to see their forces (assuming you have the VI add-on).

If you pick up one of the units in the province and hold it over the fort/castle, you will be asked if you wish to end the siege by assault. You need to do this with each stack of units you wish to participate.
It is helpful on any fortification bigger than a fort to have siege weapons (cata or bigger) Four are usually enough to assault anything up to a castle-with careful placement of artillery. More is usually better.

Greetings, Barabba73. This forum rarely, if ever, flames people's questions. There's less of that nonsense here than on any other forum I've used.

You can select the units you want to use in a siege and put them in a separate stack, then drop them on the castle. It's just like fighting a naval battle. You hold it over the castle until the stack lights up, then let go. It will ask if you want to attack.
You can also attack with as many stacks as you want.

speaking of naval battles, i havent heard anything about this or read anything about Rome: Total War yet, its just something i think would be kool, that in RTW you could fight naval battles like you do on the battle field,, or maybe on the regualr battle field you can like go into the houses or shacks and see the people inside or like go inside and light it on fire,,like a more 3rd person kind view like u are one of the soldiers,, not for the whole game or battle, jus tin like certain small instances like that, otherwise that would defeat the purpose of the game,, im not sure if this post belongs here, but the last post just gave me this thought http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

check out the area of the org dedicated to RTW, they have tons of cool stuff there, with all the info you might be looking for. to the best of my knowledge, sea battles will still be abstract. also, if you are looking for some really good screenies click here (http://www.strategyinformer.com) for general info on the game, plus unit and building profiles, click here (http://www.totalwar.com/community/rome.htm)
Hello Maximus Aurelius, welcome to the Org.
Unfortunately, naval battles in RTW will be abstract. You can read this in the RTW FAQ at the .Com. Whether this is a good thing or not has been exhaustively discussed by Voigtkampf, Sir Moody, Doug-Thompson and me in this thread: Naval battles (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=19;t=13396;st=0)
