In order to better understand anything it is useful to examine other anythings of similar categories. Governments often compare themselves to other countries (the country you reside in is always better than the other countries). Of course the following analysis is my opinion only, but I am interested in your opinion (no matter how incorrect -ha).

After MTW, several other games I have played come to mind. Although turn-based games are my favorites, AOE 1&2, are my favorite RTS strategies because of their high quality production values and play balance.

Europa U is a good game, but further efforts to use their engines, such as HOI,& Victoria have not worked well. HOI was released in an unplayable form & 5 patches later, is still unplayable; I acknowledge that some individuals insist that they actually like to play HOI. HOI is overly large with toooo many units & provinces, & after all those patches, the enemy (the other side) still does not improve their border fortifications. England still does not respond well to Germany's aggression, etc., etc. I find most other RTS to be seriously inferior to AOE2.

On turn based, LOTR2 had some playability as had MOO2. LOTR3 is as much a failure as MOO3. I find Civ3 is inferior in all but graphics to Civ2. Civil War Generals 2 was decent with some serious a1 weaknesses. The a1 can attack, does not defend, & has no ability to defend its flanks. The Talonsoft series has beautiful artwork & can play brilliantly human v human, but lacks the programming to play well human v computer.

I found Syberia-nice but short & with beautiful artwork. Myst was great in a pioneering way. I hate they way many of the puzzles in Myst & other games of the same genre have to relation to the plot. I like the Chessmaster series, & the Hoyle popular game series. Baldur's Gate 1 is the best of the roleplaying Hack-n-slashes (say I). I hate Hack-n-slashes.

My point is that on a nice turn base accumulation-organization and RT battles, MTW is king. MTW is not flawless, but dominates the genre. MTW also is in my top pc game list of all time. I have not been able to finish the top 5 list as I change my mind often. But MTW is there, along with Chessmaster 5000, AOE2, and ????.

Incidentally; nice big article with pictures on RTW in May Computer Gaming.

I hope this topic, of some interest to me, is appropriate in this forum on MTW. If not, please delete-no big deal.

Try Praetorians. Its AOE type, based on Rome, bu uses MTW like tactics.IMO in lacks a bit of variety...but give it a try.

Durruti, this topic is fine here in the Entrance Hall or in The Arena forum.

I don't have a lot of time to play PC games, so I have to be picky. TW has dominated my playlist since STW came out in 2000. It is nice to read about other games too. There may be another gem sitting out there unbeknownst to me (but I doubt it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ).
