In the years this forum has been running, I know this topic has had to come up. But I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. Besides, I want to whine.

If you are assaulting a fortification, you get to arrange your troops as you see fit, within the placement limitations. Any general who ever has gotten a chance to fight another battle has done this. However, when attacking on the regular battle map, you have very little choice--sometimes none. I can understand having to stay within the placement field, else you could set-up behind the enemy. The few battle arrangements you are offered by right-clicking the formation thingy, are fine, but you can't place that particular formation where you want it. Worse, regardless of the troops one has on the field, you often don't have all options available As often as not, you'll have one viable option, and all the rest revert to what amounts to column of companies. Great formation if your marching somewhere, or using a massed formation to drive the center, but the heavies aren't even in the front. Is this a glitch? It doesn't matter if I'm playing VI, Medieval, or a Mod. I've taken to accepting the column formation most of the time, hitting start, then immediately hitting pause to arrange my troops the way I want them. Is there something I'm missing here? If not, is there some way for the moding experts to correct this? Like maybe for the next version of Med Mod, or as a patch to the next version? If it works on castle maps, shouldn't it work on battle maps?

Gee, that was a nice whine. I feel better. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Lord O,
I completely agree that 'real world' would allow you to arrange your army's formation, and I've ground my teeth many times, when after committing to an attack where I know I'll be outnumbered, I find myself picking among the few pre-set options.

ON the other hand, I think its designed to give the defender one of his few advantages. Being able to specifically set up his troops where/how he likes before the clock starts. Its supposed to make time a more pressing issue for the attackeer. Of course, if you hit pause (I do too, I admit, so I'm not judging...), it kind of negates this advantage to the defender.

Ya know, OBADIAH, that's probably what the designers were thinking, but the advantages are with the defender in most cases. An attacking force, as you obviously know, is really at a disadvantage and expected to take higher casualties. (Grant you, this game doesn't work that way.) Rule of thumb is to try to amass two or three times the number of troops your oponent has at the point of attack. We can't do that because of the sixteen unit limit, and that's fine. It is a game. But I still would like to know about the unavailability of some of the formations when you right-click the army button. If you have a diversity of troop types, shouldn't they all be available? They are always listed. I'm just curious that it might be a bug. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif

There is a way to mofodiy the list of battle formations for your troops, indeeed in NTW we have the anti-cavalry Square formation available.

I'm not 100% how it was done, I'm sure someone else might.

Sorry I can be of little help, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.. It can be mofidied http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
