View Full Version : Ahhh Crusades
Crusades are fun, if confusing.
It appears that the computor can send their crusade by any route & the human can't.
Going east and then south thru catholic regions you can add volunteers-altho at times Hungarians won't join. Why???
Going south & then east the Spanish don't join. You steal money, but what you need are troops.
I understand the Orthodox won't join, but why some catholics?
When crusades come my way I often remove troops from the provinces the Crusaders approach-to stop from losing them.
At times the contradictions in the crusading portion of the MTW has led me to resign the game and even to call talk to my son or daughter. Hmmmm

you can only move the crusade by the shortest route to the destination.
The amount of people that will join a crusade in a particular province is determined by the zeal of the province.more zeal->more people.
BTW, you shouldnt write the headings in spanish.
The French declared a crusade on Finland in a recent campaign of mine, and guess how they got there? They took a boat over to constantinople (mine), which of course was JUST reinforced by a stack of freshly-minted chivalric MAA, the first army of its kind in that era. AFTER they scooped up half my guys, including the MAA (constantinople of course was heavily defended), they took a boat straight to Finland. Which they could have done in the first place.
So basically, they went to the complete opposite end of the world from the territory they were supposed to be attacking, just to steal my guys. That is frustrating.

This game is international in scope & a few highlights in the language of choice is appreciated by me. I can always consult a dictionary in apurs.

The crusade part of MTW is a fascinating addition to the basic game. It displays the classy nature of its creators-despite some inconsistencies-such as the ability of the a1 nations to take more flexible routes to their crusade's destination.
Often after you successfully liberate the holyland from the heathens you are rewarded by a Civil War.

Crusade movement, whether in MTW or a mod, is controlled by the AI. You are only allowed to move to specific provinces, which are highlighted when the crusade marker is picked up. The AI factions play by the same limitations. And the shortest distance to Antioch isn't always a straight line. Don't know why that is, but your crusade can be tripped merrily around the map. It used to infuriate me when my only move options were really poor, IE, into my own provinces, provinces with low zeal, or worse, through hostile territory. Yet, the AI seemed to be able to stomp around my kingdom, raping, pillaging, sucking-up troops, etc. Doing some checking with the space -ian command line code showed me the AI plays by the same rules. Many years ago, in a campaign far, far away, I had a French crusade try to pass through one of my British provinces while I was at WAR with France Duh? I refused, of course (maybe just because they were French). That crusade then jumped from province to province--back and forth and sideways--while I tried to pin it into a fight. It was early in the game, I had relatively few troops, and it crippled me for about twenty or so moves. And yes, the fat little imp in the frock excommunicated me. To be honest, I haven't seen that latitude of movement in a crusade since, mostly 'cause I'm playing MED MOD, and Wes & the guys fixed most of the crusade lunacy. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
