Your first online battle

When there was only Shogun, I went online and played two whole battles. Ooh, not alot of experience there but man that first one was great. After playing against the AI and learning how to anticipate it's moves, to face a real mind was awesome.

You know how even when set up on a very steep hill back against a map edge, with spearmen bristling all along it's top, the AI would still come straight up that hill. Stupid stupid stupid. When I played my first battle online though, to see my opponent pause and make wise choices about how to defeat me was awesome.

I was set up along a hill very much like I described with some cav sitting in the rear waiting for a time to mop up. What I remember most is that from his starting point he had sent some No Dachi on a sneaky trek through the woods that bordered the map to come at these cav from the side. Because I was facing the army he was sending against me frontally, this totally worked. Only by chance did I happen to move my camera back and swing to the side in tme to see these No Dachi already in full charge. He had snuck them across almost the entire map to right up behind my cav. I laughed out loud as they sliced through them like butter.

It is much more satisfying playing against a person than it is the AI. I got (and still get) an adrenaline rush as the battle started. It is especially fun for me when I know my allies and/or enemies. I like to communicate during the battle, it helps reinforce that you are playing with real people rather than the silent AI. In my limited online experience, friends/aquaintences are more likely to communicate during the battle.

What it lacks is the campaign aspect - your previous successes/failures contribute to your current battle in the sense of where fought and with what units. Maybe some day we'll have an online campaign available.

I thought after playing the AI on experienced many times I was ready to go on-line with my skills. At the time my opponent kept on telling me that he would define the word noob for me.:smile:

Once you adjust your army selection and tactics against good players, you will soon be victorious.

I HOPE Rome will have some campaign aspects on-line, though it would take a long time to play I suspect.

i havent had a first battle yet, i went ont he first time ever for me and a room came up,, but no one was in it,,, just a bot room moderator,, i have no idea if i did anything wrong or if just no one was i there,, can someone explain how to have an online game to me?

It's very likely you played with an unpatched version of VI.

Download the latest (not tough, there is only 1) patch, and join the fun.

The 1.1 patch is for MTW, the US/ Euro patch of 5.67 MB is for VI.

You saw noone because you are the only one playing unpatched.

Yes, it will do a few things to your game...

A few bugs are corrected (mainly swipe... if you don't know what that is, then don't worry, but also -ian does not work for MP anymore).

Chances are it may impact your SP campaign game rather negatively (as in; you can't play them anymore), but I really don't know about that (have not played campaign for a long time).

I actually won my first one. Probably because they totally underestimated me as a noob. Then, I lost about 12 or so in a row.

I unfortunately lost my first battle =P. I learned the hard way staight forward attacks = Total Defeat. Luckily later a vet told me what to do (Get low cost high Valour ect.)

My first was when Shogun was early out, I lost - as everyone did first time - and got hooked. Didn't stop playing every day for well over a year, until a certain first person shooter caught my eye, then I got hooked on counter-strike for .. well until a few months ago.

I played only a few times, with Shogun so long ago.

My first battle was i a 2v2 and I bought 2 high valor arqbusiers. We were on attack and the toughest part was getting my ally to wait for me (we were all noobs I think). My guns tore up his front line and when we charged they broke and ran, end of story.

Then I bought Everquest and that was that...

I think he means that you will not be able to play your 1.1 campaigns after installing VI? No idea what swipe is...

my record now stands at, 6 wins, 5 losses, my first two games being wins, i then came back a week later all cocky, and got my butt kicked, since then i've leveled off.

maximus im quite sure previous SP campaigns are still playable after the 2.01 patch, i donno about 1.1, im sure its the same

It really depends. But i guess 10-15 minutes are normal.

this varies greatly, sometimes just getting ready to start a battle can take a long time in itself. the battles themselves can go from anywhere from 10 minutes to over half an hour if the teams are equally matched. leaving in the middle of the battle is certainly possible, but it wont make you any friends, and if you do it too often, you will start to get a bit of a reputation.

You should give online a try. It is a rather exhilarating experience as you can tell from Maximus's post above you.

My first MP MTW was a 2v2. I played the Danes and bought 8 vikings, 5 feudal knights, 2 mounted sergeants and a royal knight general, all of high valour. I didn't know about the penalty for more than 4 units of a type at the time. The initial battle turned into 2 1v1s. When my opponent had got his archers in range I charged with the vikings, flanked with some of the cavalry and used the rest of the cavalry to support the viking line. Miraculously, it worked and my opponent routed. By then there was a blizzard on the map and I couldn't see my ally or the other opponent. I asked my ally how he was doing but got no reply. I therefore assumed he was maneuvring or having an archery duel so I gathered my forces in good order, which took forever. It wasn't until I looked at the replay that I saw that my ally was desperately fighting for his survival a short distance from me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-curtain.gif Fortunately, I nevertheless arrived in time and we won the day.

Second game was a 4v4. I managed to rout one opponent but made the same blunder in taking too long in regrouping. My side won and I was still present on the field.

3rd game: 1v1 where I used the same strategy as in my first one, only this time with the Byzantines. Yielded my 3rd victory.

4th game: 1v1 in a desert. I played the Egyptians. My opponent must have been fairly green or just not realised that this was a desert map (probably both) because he brought 5 archers and the rest of his army was about equally split into feudal knights and feudal foot knights that got grilled in the sun. I was the defender but still charged him uphill and routed him.

5th game: My opponent was Mithrandir of the Org (Glorfindel online). Here I learned that camels stink and so do I in online battles vs. veterans. Arse on a platter. End of story.

My current score is 8 wins vs. 6 defeats.
