Hi. I am England fighting France. The Pope has warned me to stop within 3 years. Well, France doesn’t want a cease fire. Other then trying to marry off daughters and sending skilled emissaries are there any other ways to gain peace?

The Pope had already declared a crusade on me. This was unfair since I had been attacked first by Aragon. Then the Papal States were destroyed by the Italians. Latter on they apparently came back from the dead and completely destroyed the Italians. The bottom line is how can I check if he has a current crusade declared me or against anyone else.

So those are my two questions thanks for the help.

The Pope is ilogical. The best thing for me is to islolate him in a castle in a provence and leave him there with few troops.Repeat process if you have to. If he is eliminated, he is hardwired to return stronger.

Your friends chart(two hands shaking),will tell you if excommunitcated or noted. You also receive crusade notices.

You don't have to make peace with someone to avoid being excommunicated. All you have to do is not attack that empire. Defending yourself if they attack you is ok, and I believe so is attacking a province to liberate a siege. Beyond that, any attack on a province or ship will get you excommunicated. So a ceasefire, while nice, isn't necessary.

I don't know of any way to check if the pope has declared crusades against you, only to see if you are excommunicated. If you are, the piety crosses of your generals will be broken.

I couldn't agree with JAG more The broken crosses just mean you are excommunicated, but not that there's a crusade against you. However, if you aren't excommunicated, you can't be crusaded against. The only problem with wackin' the Pope, is he never GOES AWAY He keeps coming back every ten or so turns, with larger and better armies. I have resigned myself to allowing him to live as a faction, but battered and isolated with few troops and little income. He can't reemerge if the faction is still active. Then, if he misbehaves, zap him with about ten three star assassins at one time. Most always works that at least one gets through They elect a new Pope, and still sit in isolation. Pennyless. Unloved. Unwanted. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Gawd, I love this game.

If your king has an influence of 8-9, the AI factions will be reluctant to sign a treaty with you, and will be inclined to ally against you out of fear. I try to keep my king's influence at 6-7 which means I am regarded as powerful enough not to be worth attacking, but not powerful enough for the rest of Europe to fear me conquering everybody. It also means that as everybody wants to be my friend, I needn't fear a crusade if I am excommunicated.

If either your king or the Pope is elderly, and your provinces are pretty loyal, you should be able to handle an excommunication pretty easily if you want to finish off the French.
