I was just playing as the Danes, and I had the greatest battle ever. Here's the situation:
1) I had just conquered Norway about five turns ago;
2) The remnants of the invasion force were kept there to maintain order in the province for those five years;
3) The Prince who lead that force had some awful vices and I really wanted him dead (his valour was -2);
4) Once loyalty was high enough to let me move them out of the province, I sent them to Livonia to weaken the garrison there.
Okay, now you have the background. Here are the numbers for the ensuing conflict:
Livonia had: 157 spearmen, 60 woodsmen, 120 Lithuanian cavalry, and 120 crossbowmen. Total = 457 men.
I had: 91 vikings, 17 archers, and 3 royal knights. Total = 111 men
I won't describe the battle in too much detail, but suffice it so say that I routed them within less than two minutes and I didn't lose very many men. I must add that I attacked them UP A SLIGHT HILL How did I do it?
Well, it goes like this. I really wanted to lose this battle, because I wanted my prince to die (hehe) and because I wanted to weaken the Livonian force for a subsequent invasion of higher-level troops. As a result, I put all my troops into loose formation so they would stand a greater chance of dying in melee, and then I charged At the last second though, just before my line was about to meet theirs, I decided that I couldn't just 'throw the battle' so ignobly..... and so I pressed CTRL-A and set everyone back to close formation. Guess what happened?
My men were in loose formation, so they were spread out quite wide. Once I pressed close formation, they all came together pretty quickly and wrapped around the flanks of the enemy line better than I have ever seen Once that happened the battle was pretty much over. I couldn't believe it
Has anyone else ever discovered this? Let me know http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
