The old British sitcoms are the only thing woth watching these days. My favourites would be:
Blackadder
To the manor born
Keeping up appearances
Only fools and horses
Allo allo

I would probably go with To the manor born if forced to choose, as it was consistently great and the idea was never worn out. Blackadder has too much slapstick nonsense and the first series loses marks for the Mr. Bean alike style of Blackadder himself. Allo allo got stupid after series 3 (or was that 4? The one where half the original cast left). Fools and horses can be so grimly depressing it is not just comedy, a good thing, but it doesn’t rate as pure comedy so it is in a class of its own. Keeping up appearances wore out the idea in the end, but only in the last series.

I hate most of the more famous ‘funny’ comedies – Dad’s army, Faulty towers, Ab Fab, etc – load of rubbish.

Honorary mention goes to Maid Marion and her merry men, as done by Tony Robinson (Baldric in Blackadder) for CBBC over a decade ago. Blackadder for children, but not really dumbed down, a twisted view of the Robin Hood legend. A real masterpiece, and I wish I could get it on DVD.

i think i would go with Porridge first, then Blackadder and Open all hours third.

i thought Only fools and horses was total crap, still do in fact.

anyone remember an old comedy set in Roman Britain?
it was called Chelsford 123 (Rory McGrath was in it), it only had a short run but it was funny. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif

I couldn't believe Blackadder didn't win - I was POSITIVE it would - and was dissapointed when it didnt. However my number #2 (though far, far, far behind Blackadder) came first - only fools and horses is class, and I still enjoy it.

not so much sitcoms but phoniex nights [peter kay] series 1 and two this is superb without a doubt. and being a nortwest lad its even better as we understand it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif it was the best series/comedy on the box at the time it was on. as for sitcom blackadder/only fools and horses were good but the last few specials they did off only fools and horses are not only dated but crap as well.

so blackadder for me.

like garlic bread peter kays the future im telling you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Spaced and Black Books are my 2 favourites.

Blackadder is a clasiic as is Fawlty Towers. Not a fan of Only Fools and Horse though - the more recent specials have been so lame.

Blackadder is fantastic, series 3 for me is the funniest.

Also Bottom was hilarious and should have ranked much higher in that BBC 2 thing.

Blackadder should have won.

Sadly I knew Only Fools would snatch it. When you repeat something as often as that and make so many Christmas specials, you know its going to be stuck in people's minds and they are going to vote for it...

If Blackadder had half the air time coverage Only Fools has been given over the years I bet you that would have won.

Gotta be The Office, closely followed by Porridge - Ronnie Barker's comic genius only narrowly beaten by Gervais and Merchant's utterly brilliant multi-level parody. Honourable mentions to Blackadder and Fawlty Towers, of course (natch).
I'll stick in a good word for The Good Life, too, partly because Felicity Kendall was so cute http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I was dissapointed that Dads Army and Hancock's Half Hour didn't do better.

I used to like Only Fools and Horses, but I got fed up with the way the BBC keeps repeating it and the way they keep putting pressure on the writer and actors to produce yet another last ever episode because they want to win the Christmas ratings battle and they have no idea how else they can do it.

My ab-so-lute favorite was Blackadder too. With exception of series 1 (which I found pretty... boring and not funny), it's a great sitcom. I love Rowan Atkinson and his characteristic pronounciation of the B It's great to hear him pronounce the name Bob. And, oh yes, the silliness of Lord Percy and Sod off I have a cunning plan Baldrick. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Blackadder was excellent. I agree that the first one was the weakest of the series.

Bottom is great as well, quite like the live shows as well especially number 2 + 3

Edit:
Spaced was excellent and hopefully a third series will be released (can't wait till fri when Shaun of the Dead is released)

And the Young ones.

In no particular order, my fav's:
- The Office
- Blackadder
- Alan Partridge
- Chewin' the Fat
- Father Ted
- League of gentlemen

I'd watch Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers and some of the others mentioned if they were on but I'd have a fairly 'take it or leave it' attitude about them.

The Office, simple as that. I don't care if it wasn't up as an option to vote for, the office is the greatest british sitcom of all time.

How can you say 'no' to a man like David Brent.

Very true. Did you know the American's who want to copy it want to change Brent into a woman? And they want to take the focus of the story away from Brent and onto Tim and Dawn. American's have no sense of comedy.

Blackadder, Rab C Nesbit, Father Ted, Coupling, Red Dwarf.

All of the above leave me in stitches, but RD, Coupling and Blackadder do an especially good job of it. The others are good in doses but I find the jokes do tend to get old eventually.

Personally I wasn't a massive fan of the office. It was good for a few giggles (especially the ep where Brant did that screwed up dance) but otherwise I found it mostly dross *hides from possible flames*

Here is a question...

Can anyone name 5 great comedies produced by ITV? (So far they have all been the beeb or C4.)

My thoughts on Felicity Kendall. I think it's the mud thing, the basis of her attraction. A bit like Charlie Dimmock... considered 'sexy' by some, but for the life of me, I cant figure out why http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif You are all very lucky, if it wasnt for the last few posts i was about to go around to everyone's house and burn them all down for not mentioning red dwarf, you should all thank monkian. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif

Now with that over

1) Red Dwarf - it has 8 series, and a film in the pipeline. The one lines in it can keep you laughing for ages and each series is different and even each episode is different. The characters are classic. Lister, Rimmer, Cat and Kryten are all superbly played. And the addition of K.K in the last few series adds even more gags.

2) Blackadder - I have to agree that this is one of the Greatish British Sitcoms ever.

I can't believe people actually like the office, i find it mundane and when ever i catch it on tv, they seem to be the same as the other one i caught. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif
