Well, I thought I'd just tell everyone about myself as I plan to stick around. I thought it may help knowing what kind of player I am and the experiences I've had. Getting to know players from random topics can be hard.

I bought STW when it first came out. I am a big Akira Kurasawa and Toshiro Mifune fan, so I knew I'd get into this game. I still enjoy the feel of this game the most. I spent many a night conquering Japan, I was rather addicted. I only played SP for some odd reason though. But one day I decided to brave a battle with a live general. I got my *ss kicked. But I was game for another battle a few days later. I got lucky and routed him from the field. Sadly, I stopped after that. So two online battles under my belt. MI intrigued me, but I never bought it. I felt STW was so perfect as is, there was little need for it.

Does anyone else remember when they were thinking of naming MTW, Crusader TW? When I saw them creating it I followed it with much interest. LIfe had taken hold at that point and I wasn't playing much STW anymore. Then I stopped. About 6 months ago I bought three games. NWN, Sim City 4, and MTW. I got hooked into NWN and never even touched the other two. I started my first MTW campaign about a week ago. I have divorced myself from NWN, it's a lethal time sink hole. And I still haven't played Sim City 4. And I bet I won't with the hold MTW has on me again. Oh well, at least now I'm playing a game that I truly enjoy instead of feel is a chore. Building stuff for NWN and persistant worlds (for other people basically) gets old, fast.

With MTW I feel the old magic of STW coming back. These games are so good. Through experiencing the differences in this game though, compared to STW, I'm wondering what I might have missed in MI. So I plan to get it. I will also be getting VI, as it seems to be the standard for online play. And, if there is another culture I love, it's Vikings. Big RUNE fan here, awesome game.

Online play is capturing my attention again and I plan to hone my skills a bit and then wade in. The whole idea of Ronin generals and Clans when I first saw them back in the STW days seemed so cool to me. Plus, one thing I always tell people when I am trying to convince them to buy these games is, that I still get nervous when entering into a battle in SP. The tension and reward of fighting a live general is that much more intense. My two battles online proved that to me. I don't know about joining or creating a clan though. While it adds comradery to your multi army battles, I like the idea of being a feared Ronin. One even the clans will come to know. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

NWN = Never Winter Nights ??

Glad you are enjoying MTW. I looked at STW the Original after MTW, by borrowing a friends copy and played it briefly, before returning. MTW has so many more options, units, factions, etc. STW was a bit old. However, I saw where MTW came from and wished I had STW before, rather than burning my time on CivII/III and Caesar III/Pharoah.

Yes, Neverwinter Nights. And I know where your coming from in terms of STW looking old. Just imagine MTW not existing though back then. And the charm for those that still enjoy playing it is I think the culture. The way in which one must make a Japanese TW title is so different than Europe. The music especially. The commands on the field yelled in Japanese. The look of the units and their banners, is actually appropriate for Japan. The cool cutscene movies.

It would be interesting to do a poll about whether the players who are still enthralled by STW are big Japan fans. Whether they watch samurai movies, anime and generaly enjoy Japanese cultural things. I often read that it is the feel of STW that they enjoy. I think there's just something about Japanese warfare that captures their imagination. At least this is true for me.
