My favorite single player campaign is Takeda (black daimyo) on the Hard setting.

Why "hard" and not "expert"; and why Takeda?

I enjoy playing Takeda because I like having to play on both sides of Nihon at once. Being in two places means I have to (read in MUST) use: Emissaries, Ninjas and Shinobi. As for Expert vs. Hard: On hard I can manage, on Expert, one end of the island gets wiped out!

Fighting on two fronts (while trying to turn it into a One Front war...) means I always have limited man power - I have no overwhelming force anywhere on the map.

Plus - with 2 campaigns going on at once (on both sides of the island), SOMETHING is always bound to happen. I have never had the opportunity to just "click" through about four seasons to build up troops.

Major high points? Getting Naginita! When you are scrapping by, getting those Naggies makes all the difference.

So - what is your favorite SP set up, from a purely "fun" standpoint?

You can win with Takeda on expert by giving up the southern (western) provinces, and taking Musashi right away. Hang onto Aki as long as possible.

Well, why not take the hard way? Abondon the eastern fief and concentrate on the west. You are still much better off than Mori on expert. The iron sand provinces are easily available, nd the reduced cavalry cost always helps.

I'm playin Oda on hard right now. It's alot easier than I thought, I'm about to try Takeda on expert. =)

The most important units are the Geisha and emissary. The Geisha is what brings me the win most of the time. Like the saying goes, "a smart general first seeks victory, then battle."

When you're surrounded in small areas like Takeda and Oda, the quickest way to gain land is build allies by means of emissaries. Then, while there is peace, build a geisha house asap. Send her to assassinate your allies' Daimyo. Once they are all gone, no heirs left, some of his lands and men will transfer to you.

Dirty trick, but all's fair in love and war right? Hard to believe, but I learned this one from the A.I.

You have a spare citadel for Geisha? But surely that means you aren't finishing with Takeda in twenty years on expert.

The quickest way to win the game is to hunt down one clan at a time. Figure out were the heirs are and kill them in battle then go knock off the Daimyo in battle.

The smaller the battles the greater an advantage your Daimyo Hatamoto have. Also early they tend to be the only heavy calvary around. So use those advantages and that it is normally easier to out move the enemy when you have a small force.

So charge out with your Daimyo, use him in smaller battles and lead a larger main force on the same front with a heir (so they go up in rank and diminsh their chances of getting assassinated).

Actually... in the LATE sengoku campaign, many clans start out with a citadel and upgraded dojos... (but, NOT Tokugawa, of course... that would be stacking it...)
