There's nothing like learning the hard way... After watching my rampaging Egyptian hordes, full masters of Asia Minor, fragment and disintegrate in multiple civil wars after a couple of failed Jihads on Crete and Rhodes, I now really understand the importance of my ruler's Influence http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

No news for the old-timers, of course, but I'd not played with the under-influential Eggys before. I also noticed something I hadn't expected: I had two Jihads fail for reasons I don't quite figure.

Does a Jihad fail if your ruler is captured, or because it loses land connectivity back to its Ribat? I know it fails on the destruction of the Ribat or death of the sultan. The Spaniards took Egypt, capturing my sultan, while I sent my Jihads to reclaim Cyrenacia (sp?) - we swapped Jihads for crusades over the border, which also surprised me - and since my Ribat was in Sinai the Jihads had no land route back to it and failed - the message was something about losing touch with their home Ribat.

Anyway, from owning the SE corner of the map to a couple of broken provinces surrounded by rebels, Spaniards and resurgent Turks and Byzantines in the space of three years. Hung by my own over-expansion, I reckon. As in life, so in MTW. I love this game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Cheers,
Ulair

Nasty, the way things can turn out. But it'll be fun to rebuild your once-great empire, methinks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Aye I rebuilt my civil-war-broken Almo empire, which was a real fun indeed...until my game was killed by the horrendous CTD that is. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

@Ulair: r u certain your ribat wasn't captured? I checked the EVENTS.TXT file and there's no message for a jihad failed due to losing contact with it's ribat. the only thing close is
["jihad_base_lost_blurb"]
{"Without the backing of a Ribat, this Jihad has ended in defeat."}
which indicates a lost ribat.

Also, i've sent jihads thru enemy territory (with no direct land/sea connections to my territory) and never had one disband. Is it possible you skipped over a natural disaster event? An earthquake could have destroyed the ribat, ending the jihads.

Ahh, my dear "CTD Mouzafphaerre"
I must say I admire your patience and endurance with thoose CTD´s. If it happened to me on that scale, no even half of it, I´d go berserk and split the bugger in two with my Danish axe.

Ulair, you might have lost a ship to brake that important link you´ll need or missed out on some event like motorhead stated.

I don't think losing land contact matters. I know I've allowed Jihads through my territory. Also, being surrounded by enemies does not bother crusades.

I'd have to guess that the capture of your sultan is the problem.

What is a CTD? does that mean crash-to-desktop? if so that happens to me to sometimes, I thought it was a problem with my computer.. So your telling me it is a bug with the game? Please tell me I am not the only one...

everyone gets a CTD every now and then, esp. after a hard fought battle or favorable turn of events

aren't I always Mr. optimistic? it's true though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

That's my guess too. I'm certain the Ribat wasn't destroyed - no enemy in sight and no random earthquakes. Once I can face it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I'll reload the savegame and experiment.
