There's nothing like learning the hard way... After watching my rampaging Egyptian hordes, full masters of Asia Minor, fragment and disintegrate in multiple civil wars after a couple of failed Jihads on Crete and Rhodes, I now really understand the importance of my ruler's Influence http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
No news for the old-timers, of course, but I'd not played with the under-influential Eggys before. I also noticed something I hadn't expected: I had two Jihads fail for reasons I don't quite figure.
Does a Jihad fail if your ruler is captured, or because it loses land connectivity back to its Ribat? I know it fails on the destruction of the Ribat or death of the sultan. The Spaniards took Egypt, capturing my sultan, while I sent my Jihads to reclaim Cyrenacia (sp?) - we swapped Jihads for crusades over the border, which also surprised me - and since my Ribat was in Sinai the Jihads had no land route back to it and failed - the message was something about losing touch with their home Ribat.
Anyway, from owning the SE corner of the map to a couple of broken provinces surrounded by rebels, Spaniards and resurgent Turks and Byzantines in the space of three years. Hung by my own over-expansion, I reckon. As in life, so in MTW. I love this game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Cheers,
