Hello you old wise modders of the ORG,

I'm back with yet another silly question: What should be changed in names.txt to alter the province, faction, leader title names? Only the {"stuff"} to the right or both ["this"] and {"that"}? What about @{"these"}?

I searched thoroughly but couldn't find anything useful, sorry.

in names .txt, and also in changes.txt (for VI) and in default faction specific (for leader names and\ faction names) and in default region specific (for province names)

never ever change anything thats ["text"] feel free to change the other to. {"text"} is the translation of ["text"] by changing it, you change what the game displays when that string is used. @{"text"} can also be changed, it merely means the data string is located in another file, or is repeated somewhere.

Hello again,

I'm afraid I've screwed up names.txt (no, I didn't neglect to backup first but...)

I've edited the following:

CHANGES.TXT
DEFAULT_FACTION_SPECIFIC.TXT
DEFAULT_HEROES.TXT
DEFAULT_REGION_SPECIFIC.TXT
DEFREGSPEC.TXT
EARLY_FACTION_SPECIFIC.TXT
NAMES.TXT

The game couldn't load and produced an error. Then I started ruling out the files one by one and found out that it's NAMES.TXT that causes the trouble.

What may it be? I have triple-checked and there's no changed ["stuff"] or typoes etc. Can you please eloborate on the interreferences of the files? It's very possible that there might be mismatch with some value in one of the other files.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry can't help you there, but I didn't think Names.txt could cause that, I thought it could cause Could not Translate errors.

OK... I went ahead and redid the whole stuff from scratch. It took me one day, from afternoon to past midnight.

The game doesn't load. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif Whatever I do with names.txt crashes the game and if I leave it alone, names won't come up.

Now...

This thing has been done hundreds of times since the game came out. There's medmod, maxmod, minmod, safemod, ntw, htw, xtw, @tw... hundreds of mods altering names/provinces/factions. That's why trying to discover it on ones own is POINTLESS.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

I don't want to rediscover the sun.

I just want some damn simple help from the able modders who have done this hundreds of times and they're not eager to give it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

I'm not happy. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-no.gif

I'm overly frustrated.

I hate it when people want to keep information for themselves.

I hate people who do it. I've met enough of their kind in modding SD.

Regards.

Sorry, Mouzafphaerre I'm unable to sort out the problem. But I can give you an advice: send a PM to the Blind King of Bohemia. He has increased faction's number to 30, in his SuperMOD, so he should be able to sort your problems out.

Hope you'll be able to solve these problems... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Hmmmmmmmmmmm Tricky,
If you've only edited as the Black Prince prescribes you shouldn't have any probs. Is the names file the only part of the mod you've got installed at present. As I understand, you've taken all the rest of the mod exept the names file out but the Names file is still giving you problems. All the names file does is translate filenames into on screen/in game file desription/names. So unless you've mis-edited a [text] somewhere or removed a file that the [text] refers to or even have omited [text] which a file is trying to find (most likely in my case) there shouldn't be a problem. I don't know if text in the changes file and names file can conflict but imagine changes overwrites the namesfile so there shouldn't be a problem there. Unfortunately modding is a minefield. Unless your very methodical and thorough, testing and backing up everything at each stage you will make lots of errors. And even if your carefull you will make errors.

Hello,

Tricky is not in this thread (yet). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm trying to make a "modlet" myself, so no downloaded mod is involved.

I want to change:

* some faction names (all forms incl. posessive etc.)
* some ruler titles
* some province names
* some castle names
* some entire name (and hero) lists for certain factions

and

* add/remove a couple heroes (optional)

Thanks in advance.

lol http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif I've already made myself a name as a DIY modder and you've all seen that most often this turns out into a DIY "mess your files up" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif

Mouzafphaerre, you can send me your txt files if you want (you can find my e-mail in my profile). Perhaps I can scroll through your modded files too. Who knows, maybe I find something? Not that I'm an expert in these things, but I've already cleaned up some of my own mess, so... Anyway, four eyes see more than just two.

Mouzafphaerre,
This is a copy from a modding guide I´ve had for a while. Don´t know who wrote it but if the author read this - thanks, it´s a treasure

3.2.16 Adding entirely new names (OPTIONAL)
This section is entirely optional. If your happy to simply use the predefined names for your faction then you can ignore this part. However if you wish to add some historical accuracy to your faction then read on.

Example:
Some historical dutch figures were:
Count Dirick III 993-1039
Count Dirick IV from 1039-1049
Also the forefathers of the dutch royal family were:
Walram I
Hendrik II de Rijcke
Adolf Van Nassau
Many thanks to EX__Mordred for providing me with this list.
So to provide a little historical flavour, I will show you how to add the above names. We’ll make Dirick IV our first King, make the forenames above royal forenames, add Van
Nassau to the Dutch surnames list and finally make de Rijcke the royal surname.
The below method was given to me by Majestic Ithaskar so many thanks for your help once again.

Every name in DEFAULT_HEROES.txt must have a label and in the Loc/Eng/names.txt each must be repeated exactly the same and given an identifier.
Open the DEFAULT_HEROES.txt file and scroll down to the dutch forenames list. Add the below names to the beginning of the list.
// 20: dutch_forenames ADD_FORENAMES:: "Dirick" "Adolf" "Walram" "Hendrik" "Rutgheer" "Vlas" "Walraven" "Willem". Also scroll down to the dutch surnames list and add the below line to be beginning of the surnames list.
// 17: dutch_surnames ADD_SURNAMES::
"De Rijcke" "Van Nassau"
Now Adolf and Van Nassau have already been defined but Dirick, Walram, Hendrik and De Rijcke are entirely new names so we need to defined them in the Loc/Eng/names.txt .
Open this file now and scroll down to end of the forename and surname section. Add the below lines.
// New Dutch forenames ["Dirick"] {"Dirick"} ["Walram"] {"Walram"} ["Hendrik"] {"Hendrik"}
// New Dutch surnames ["De Rijcke"] {"De Rijcke"}
The part in the square brackets is the identifier. This must read exactly the same as the name in the
Default_Heroes.txt. You can also set some Princess names using this method. Also you can now add famous heroes with new names using this method as well, i.e. define the new names in the
Loc/Eng/names.txt file and then add those names to the famous heroes list, princess list etc

I will gladly mail you the complete guide if you provide me with your adress. Good luck

Thanks. According to the guide, I did right. Anyway, I'll redo it with more attention to spelling etc.

The guide is "Adding New Faction Guide for Viking Invasion" by "EX__Starkhorn" and stickied at the top of this very board. (Ignore my email please.)

It was such a stupid mistake. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif I was using extended characters in names.txt labels and the game couldn't load. You have to use the standard 29 letters in the labels and spare the rest (accents, umlauts) for the translations. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-blush.gif

Hey Tricky, thanks all the same http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif The last files I sent include typoes (bad province names). I already corrected them but was too lazy to launch the antivirus and OE for the resend...

The whole thing must be complete soon. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
