I know this has been asked before but I just love to read peoples opinions on these two fantastic games.

I would love to see a mixture of the two games (Medieval's campaign coupled with Shogun's battles)

Why do you think STW battles are better?

well for a start they are a hell of a lot smoother than Medievals. I can play battles with a res of 16*12 without any slowdown even with huge armies.

That aside I just prefer the way that individual soldiers in each unit react to their situation. If they are being attacked they don't just stand there like in Medieval and I feel that the fighting animation is a lot better. In Medieval you get all soldiers in a unit all performing the same animation in sync (when engaged with an enemy unit) which doesn't look right

The weather effects, sound and general atmosphere are superior IMO

Don't get me wrong, I still think MTW battles are great but I think Shogun's are better. If only they had bigger and more varied maps.

I think you need a new computer or something. MTW looks far better than STW. I tryed going back to STW and it was just to easy and simple vs. MTW. Same animation in sync??? I don't think so..

Something i really like better in MTW in better control of reinforcements.

I agree though. One thing STW really has got is much better maps. They can be huge. They just look better to me.

If you have a unit of spearmen and they are 3 ranks deep and engaged in battle, the first rank is animated as they fight the enemy but why are the other two ranks also animated as if they are fighting when the first rank seperates them from the enemy?

I see it all too often, a unit 3 or 4 ranks deep and every soldier in the unit is performing a fighting animation even though only the first rank is engaged.

I don't agree that I need a new computer, I don't remember saying that Shogun looks better than Medieval either. My Medieval battles are played at 1200*1024 with a lot of video memory allocated to the textures so the units don't look blocky and it runs perfectly smooth

About the spearmen, the 3-4 ranks are fighting the enemy, the rest are in reserve. Thats why the units 3-4 ranks are performing a fighting animation.

Will it be a 100% as STW or will it have ships, trade ect. like MTW?

When I play the game only the soldiers engaged in fighting are animated, not every member of the unit.

rows supporting should also be doing the animation.

either all doing the animation or only the last row not doing the animation shows good deployment of spear/pike

Spearmen have longer weapons then swordsmen or axemen, so the second rank also attacks. Pikemen have i believe 4 ranks that attack.

Spear units have 2 support ranks and pike units 4. So you can actually see 3 ranks of spearmen fighting.

Both. Shogun is very atmospheric, while still being deeply strategic. Medieval has a much wider range of units and therefore much more strategy, but is somewhat less mysterious feeling, probably because of the more familiar european setting.

I've absolutly loved both games and am looking forward to RTW.

Well I installed STW out of curiuosity and have these comments:

- MTW clearly is a big step improvement from STW. Those who accuse MTW of just being a mod of STW are mistaken IMO.

- graphically I don't think STW is as good. Whats with the X's on the tops of hills? The presence of mist is the only thing that really stands out, although the trees might also be prettier.

- casualty rates seem higher than in MTW speed wise; it feels two units reduce each other faster than they would in MTW.

I do really support a Shogun version in MTW, that would be cool. But I can't help thinking... why do it now, when you now you're only going to haver to do it all again after Rome comes out?

I like both, but MTW stole my heart with the strategy part and the battle scenes are superior Plus with the additional units and some special units allocated to various factions, MTW is a lot more fun than STW where all the units are the same more or less

i liked the feeling that you won the battle not because you had superior units but had a better strategy.

That fog was at times annoying in STW but why is there never fog in MTW. That fog sometimes saved my butt and sometimes it caused me to lose a battle because i was never able to find all the enmy units

I have seen fog in MTW battles, but it doesn't last very long since the weather is always cycling through various states. It seems to be the result of moving away from the seasonal turns of STW to yearly turns in MTW. The randomization of initial weather required by yearly turns is continued throughout the battle itself. If you pick a particular starting weather in custom battle, it doesn't seem to make any difference to the weather you get except you might start out at a different place in the weather cycle. There are a few different cycles available depending on climate and season. I remember a LongJohn post where he said the weather was improperly implimented in MTW. He specifically said some muppet had screwed it up.
