Alright, I've downloaded Genpai War installer, but I have a huge problem:

For some reason, my pc downloads files into a microsoft word format, making it impossible for me to download anything like the MOD i just tried. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-computer.gif

It is very frustrating, and its been doing this for about a year, no matter what i download, it becomes a wordfile filled with thousands of pages of jibberish. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif

I have tried importing it to things like Winzip and such, but those programs just open the files as word documents as well. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif

I am deeply sorry for inappropriately posting this here, but being a new user i am extremely limited. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-embarassed.gif

I am just absolutely fed up and disgusted with this annoying error that prohibits me from downloading files to improve my games (such as STW or MTW). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

I know there are several computer guru's here and am desperately seeking help http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-help.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

thanks for your time...

Hello jkaney55,

I'm not sure what's causing this problem, but there's something 'easy' you can try to open at least your downloads.

Depends a bit on your Operating System settings, but if you can see the extension .doc, simply change it to .zip (or .rar .exe in case it's one of those).

I do have wrong extensions at times too, and use this simple edit to fix it.

Thanks Tosa Inu,

Your kind help is sincerely appreciated, however I think the problem must lie elsewhere as the document name is as titled:

GENPEI WAR MOD.zip

I was going to try the other options you've listed, but unfortunately I am not sure as to how to change them... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif as I am quite clueless when it comes to computer stuff.

However, I am fairly good at following directions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Any other help would be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you once again http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

I don't think that .zip files can have spaces In them, use _ (underscores) instead. Other than that it's corrupt or bad zipping. However, this area isn't my forte.

perhaps this is due to file associations? have word taken control of all extensions?

I would recommend trying to get a checksum or hex editing but it's not that practical.

have you considered reinstalling OS? fresh install could easily fix the problem.

Katank, Thank you for the suggestion, but what exactly is
OS http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-embarassed.gif

computer jargon is something I am not to familiar with http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif

Thanks to all of you guys for your help, and I apologize for being so computer-illiterate...

If you have WinZip (or whatever archiving software), there should an option/preference/configuration in which you can setup which file extentions to associate with your program. For example, in WinZip 9.0 you can look on the menu bar for options -> configuration and then select the system tab. There you will see a check box associate WinZip with archives and an associations button to select which types of archives to associate to WinZip. Check the zip archive box and from that point on zip files will open WinZip.

The other approach you can take is to NOT double click on the zip file - it will simply open Word from what you are telling us. Instead, open WinZip (or whatever archive program you have) and then from within this program, open the zip file. This should get around the file extention association problem you seem to have.

I'll try to paint a more vivid picture of the situation, as
before I had left it pretty vague... so here goes:

As you all know, we are not given choices when downloading
from the host sites, so I went through the whole process of
downloading to arrive at a complete and apparently successful
download. However, when going into my program file then into
total war, I have the file but under a Microsoft word document.
I double click on it, and sure enough, I end up with a couple
thousand pages of coded writing.

This is not the first time this has happened before, it has
happened when downloading other patches and MODs for
other games. The bizarre part is the files do not end with
.doc instead the end with the correct extensions such as
.exe or .zip

Anyway, I inserted a full copy of the document into Winzip
with high hopes of the ability to open the file, but have
emerged with no success.

Now, I have tried most of the kind suggestions given with the
exception of reinstalling the OS. Reason being, the CD has
disappeared sometime ago, and since my PC is about 4 years
old, Gateway no longer holds the CD for the program...

I am not sure exactly what I should do...
It is incredibly annoying, but is the absolute only thing
wrong with my computer.

Once again my description has turned out to be very vague..
due to my especially poor lack of computer knowledge.
But hopefully someone may relate as I turn to the community
for help, hopefully someone might know what is happening.

Thanks once again, with no luck yet, all
suggestions have been great help.

Thanks,
J Kaney http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif

I know the problem.

you have the hide known extension thing on

thus, real name is blahh.zip.doc however the last extension is hidden.

to fix this, go to tools-> folder options and select the view tab

then deselect the checkbox that says hide extensions for know file types.

apply to all folders.

now go to the file and rename blah.zip.doc to blah.zip and everything should be OK http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Thanks a bunch, I'll have to try this
hopefully it will work.

I just have one small question:
Open Tools under what?
Winzip maybe?

And one more small question:
Once I get this working (should it work)
will I need to redownload the file, or will
the file change itself back to what it
needed to be?

Thanks once again

under explorer

then you can see the files as blah.zip.doc

which you right click and rename to blah.zip

then blammo, stuff works

Oh yeah, by the way, now that
I can access the file, and have
installed it, how can I access
the game to play it?

Thanks once again

Hello jkaney55,

Assuming that you installed it properly:

Start STW WE/MI and start a new campaign. There's a scroll list at the top to select different starting dates. There should be something like Gempei era there. (Sorry, it's been a while since I did myself).

Good luck and have fun.

I think I might have installed it improperly
because I've checked the campaign selection
it is unfortunatly absent from the choices...
Is there a certain way to install it?

katank

good to see it worked out for you.

I'm sorry I can't help with the mod though as I'm not familiar with it

Thanks one final time (as it has now become
quite redundant http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif )

I have figured out how to set it up, and have
now embarked upon a new escapade
