Here's a mod idea I've had. This would start in 771 A.D. and use a modified version of the regular MTW map.
The factions:
-Franks
-Angles
-Saxons
-Welsh
-Scots
-Irish
-Picts
-Danes
-Norse
-Swedes
-Abbasids
-Cordovans
-Asturians
-Avars
-Magyars
-Khazars
-Bulgars
-Byzantines
-Novgorod
-Polans

So, although you're not dealing with an experience modder, I'd like to know if anyone likes this idea.

It's a good idea, just a shame I don't have the time to make the MOD.

Excellant idea,
Duke John is making a new step by step guide to modding and is posting it somewhere here in the Dungeon. Most of this mod can be achieved through simlpe re-scripting and renaming and with loads of units and buildings already available to adopt and adapt from the VI mod. How to ammend to the campaign map and how to create New animations should all be in Duke John guide. Although if you do create new units you'll need 3ds max, Maya or whichever modelling/animation package you prefer. look forward to future developments.

Such a mod is already existing I think, made by Kataphraktoi if Im not mistaken. Ive still got it on my pc, and although she has made mostly changes to the Byzantines, the Franks, English, Burgundians, Slavs, Khazar, the Fatamids, etc. are all in. You could ask her if she'd allow someone else to complete her work http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Sounds like a good Idea Earl, you should do it. I can help partially with the historical part if you would like.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Anything happening with this mod proposal then. I've still not checked Kataphrakti's Dark age mod. Ellesthyan, is it up on the Org. One thing i thought should definitely be added in this mod was The Lombards and maybe The Spanish Marches (Aragon/Catalonia) as seperate from the Asturians. I might even be able to assist a little.
My modding skills don't stretch to animation and map making yet. But I can attempt alot of everything else. Plus have good sources for historical information and unit icons (and copies of most 2D and 3D design programmes). So Earl hows the mod going, maybe I can be of help.

I haven't done much on this mod idea, but if you are willing to offer help, that certainly gives a little bit of encouragement to see it through.

Oh yeah and Nomad, I was intending to include the Lombards - I just forgot to include them in the list.

I can help you in organising the names and such stuff since my own Modlet is about just that.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Think the main thing will be to get the Map right. There are enough units and buildings between the Vikings stuff and the Medieval stuff, to pad out a basic Dark Age Game and then possibly think about using some of the custom folders and a few of Duke John New Unit Graphics or some originals, if there's anyone interested doing/lending a few.
I've just got 3dsMax5 but I am still very new to it, so won't be dabbling in animation just yet. All the new faction flags and shields will probably be the fiddliest bit. Think it would be a good idea to download, Kataphrakti DarkAge mod and pick up from where she left of maybe she's already done a few flags. I'm of to investigate.

I'll just let you know that this mod is still a possibility. What I'd appreciate is any historical input anybody has to offer. I can edit most of the names for the factions.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif High there Earl,
Im dabbling a bit with Hetmans Mod proposal at the moment. Working on some late 15th early 16th century units, so I can't promise commitment. However I noticed you've not included the Umayyad Caliphate. Think its got to be in there I know the Ummayad dude was only an Emir but he was pretty much indipendant and did fight (and win) against the Abbasids becuase of his indipendent style of government. That besdies there are shed loads of Unit icons to be found on the DBA website. They cover all the armies of the time, I 'll do some research and post you some Jpegs, if it helps. Also you could (eventually) borrow those HTW elephants for a Persian styli army, (maybe a bit fancifull, but...) and perhaps plunder a few more body bifs for other stuff. Ok of to download the Lukmap generator,

Hi Again Earl, Got some Jpegs here for you,
but I'll need you email address. There's some Franks, Avars, Thematic Byzantine, Lombard and Magyar stuff. More to follow if you like these.

p.s I haven't got time to convert them to BIf's at the moment. But if there are no other takers maybe I could do it later.

Earl of Sandwich,

I think, that some kind of collaboration with our (Fury of the Northmen, that is) team would serve your mod well. This is because our mod is set in approximately the same era as yours, and we're going to have some of the factions you have in your list (Franks, Lotharingians/Lombards, Germans etc.). We both are working on dark age mods, so some exchange of information would probably help both projects.

Regards,
EC

Well, I did mention the Cordovans, and by that I meant the Umayyads, or the Emirate of Cordova.

I'd be glad to see them. My email address is CA11887@hotmail.com.

That was just what I was thinking. I agree that we should collaborate on the creative effort.

Ooop's Sorry,
Missed the Cordovans looking for the word Ummayid. So much to do, so little time. I've sent you a few New Unit icon images in the post. Hope they're of some use.

Nomad, those pics were pretty good. I can say that they are of some help, definitely, in terms of how they give some idea of what their armies were like.
Anyhow, I've done a little research on the thematic byzantine armies. They would consist of
Psiloi (archers)
Skutatoi (spearmen)
Kataphraktoi/Klibanophori
Tagmata Cavalry
Trapezetoi (light cavalry armed with swords, and perhaps bows as well)
Thematic Cavalry (not as powerful as the elite tagmata)
as well as various mercenaries

Frankish units- I'm thinking of a frankish knight unit; a little more powerful than the regular dark age mounted nobles.

Avars- definitely there will be the pre-existing avar nobles as their elite unit. In addition, it appears they had axe wielding footman as well as spearthrowers, from those jpeg files.

This project will probably kick into full gear in a week or so, because now, I have school projects and stuff to work on.

Alright, I have continued work on the mod, so feel free to continue talking about it and giving ideas. I've done some modding on faction names. Unfortunately, the game won't run right now...hopefully it's only temporary, and the computer will stop pouting and get BACK TO WORK LIKE THE DAMN PIECE OF JUNK IT IS http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif It doesn't look like there are many takers for this mod at the moment. Shame but with Hellenic and WoTR beta testing plus the new XV-XVIImod being developed, I guess a few hands are tide. I'm going to be Beta testing for a bit plus i'm working on a mod already. So, can't commit to much more than more unit pics and general info. Hopefully you'll geta few more takers soon, Good luck with the computer, mate.

It turns out the problem with the game running was related to the naming. So, I managed to get it fixed, so I had the names as I wanted them. Then, I tried to edit historical kings for the Frankish faction, and something must have gone wrong, because now, everybody is nameless. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-oops.gif Well, I'll just have to figure out what went wrong and correct this problem.

Earl of Sandwich

Alright, that problem has been corrected, though with a hitch. But anyways, if anybody has some historical knowledge that is worthy of contributing, I would appreciate it.

What sort of historical information do you want? It's a bit hard otherwise... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
