well, if you are excommed right away, no one can tech up to crusades yet so they don't do anything

once they have crusade markers sitting around and the pope calls for crusades on you, be sure to welcome very angry knights and order footmen

BTW, apparently if the pope calls for crusades against a faction, it's possible to launch multiple crusades at that faction. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Stupid peasent rebellions will turn into large scale Christian rebellions if you wait a while.

If your king has an influence of 6-7, few factions will be keen on picking a fight with you, even if the pope wants them to. A low influence rating means you are perceived as a weak power and an influence rating of 8-9 means you are perceived as a potential threat.

Also, if you are only fighting against one enemy and most other powers are allied with you, not everyone will be keen to risk everything on a crusade against you.

If the pope urges you to crusade against someone, the only advantage to you of doing this is that you won't need to give the pope as much money to get his blessing for the crusade.

While you are excommunicated, it is well worth checking the loyalty of your provinces every turn, and building loyalty enhancing structures such as churches.

Historically, a king would politely decine or ignore papal urgings to start a crusade if he thought it wasn't in his best interests.

He'll also pay for some of them, too.

Is there a time limit? Do you have to launch right after the Pope calls for Crusades to launch multiple Crusades, or do you get several turns? I don't play Catholics enough to know. Every time I've had multiple crusades launched against me, It's been right after the Pope issued the call.

I think you have to launch as he calls or nice stuff doesn't happen.

I usually launch right after he calls to be able to do so. you may be able to get away with launching a few years later but I would guess the time frame is quite short.

He renews his call every now and then though.
