seems to me that even if i kill all the prisoners i have, ransoms still occur after for nobles i have captured. how can i ransom them when they're dead? wtf?

and while we're on the subject, why do i get BS vices like strange and pecker-brained just for killing prisoners. again: wtf?

I wouldn't complain about receiving moola and still getting the pleasure of executing them.

are you sure these are not from different battles?

in order to kill all, click the kill all button every couple of seconds.

I typically do a round of assigning orders to all my units and then hit that button.

I almost use it as a confirmation of orders button.

however, habit sometimes bites when I forgot that I captured a king. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

No, I get the same thing, but only when I kill them AFTER i win a battle, like when that screen pops up.... It certainly messes up my general's take no prisoners policy...

This might be because the retreating army have nowhere to go.

I think snowhobbit is right. If the one who escaped the battlefield have nowhere to go (castle, neighbouring friendly province) they are captured after the battle and ransomed.
The strange vice after battle is probably totally coincindently.

thx for the insights. that escapee thing might be true.

altho it seems to me that executing prisoners does in fact bugger you up with all sorts of bad vices - which really sux cuz killing them is often the best military decision to make. it seems that my Generals who are Hero's with mostly all-good virtues start getting all kinds weird BS vices the moment i line up some heads to chop off. if i could get some confirmation from the techies about if that is true for sure or not, that'd be very cool.

I concur with this. Happens quite often too me since I use pincing manouvers on the offensive and do get a lot of captivities although I might have slayed all prisoners after battle.

Well, I know that in at least one case that happened to me without having the nowhere to go issue. Well, that's not true, it's possible they had nowhere to go. But I know for a fact that I captured their King during combat itself. I proceeded to execute all the prisoners (it was their last province, no heirs, wanted to get rid of them before getting ex-communicated). Instead, I got the ransom for the King, and he was holed up in their Keep. Now, I have no problem with getting the 10+K florins, but I really did want him dead.

dude, stop killing prisoners after the first vice pops up since then you get morale penalties which really suck. It goes up to -3 morale IIRC which is fairly steep in a game that places such emphasis on morale.

However, I can never resist getting Butcher when I get the opportunity. It's just so cool. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Scant Mercy is good, but No Mercy is bad.

Kill prisoners once or twice until you get the Scant Mercy virtue, then stop.

My Kings allways have Scant Mercy and swift justice, I wonder why http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I have never killed all prisoners and still got ransoms, lots of fun and still get payed, nice.

I hate these V&V's i always want to kill off the troops, no point giving them back as i will just have to fight them again, but then you get morale penalties, its seriously annoying..

katank
04-17-2004, 18:37
but then again, they get lowered command ratings and the ransom can give you new troops to fight them again.

besides, the money they pay can't be used to buy new troops.

it's not as bad as it seems though I also find it annoying

Snowhobbit

hmm, did some checking and found out that you can indeed execute them and still get the ransom, wonder if the troops are dead then?
Really strange that no one noticed this before...

Hi there,

I'm trawling through posts picking up loads of good tips, but this is still confusing me:

I was in a fight with the BYZ and their faction leader was present. I gave them a good hiding, and when their general ran off (with the remains of his army) I sent some Royal Knights after him to capture him. I did the old double click on a space in front of the retreating enemies so my Knights ploughed through them capturing and killing plenty.
On the downside, they killed the Sultan so I got no ransom.

Is it best to use Light Cav to chase down runners, or is there a sure way to capture, rather than kill, a faction leader.

cheers NT

no sure way really.

I think you need to be able to get it so that the unit can a) catch him b) be strong enough to kill him c) not be trigger happy.

first two quite doable but third, meh.

I have difficulty restraining my troops sometimes.

I do seem to get lots of captures with halbs though. I think more than most but that may just be my imagination.

The only time you will not get a bad vice at least 90 percent of the time is if you take prisoners when your castle is being assaulted.

Serpent

If you have prisoners from fight kill them after battle but before body count Then all prisoners are killed (even those who just didn't have friendly province.)

Whit rebels you don't get ransoms you get their lands and confiscate their harvest. Money just depends how many rebels have you captured. You can release them but you still get their lands.

All units that are running from battlefield will be captured.
Sometimes they just stop running and start attacking and die Sultan or not. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If you want to kill their leadr you can use some form of light cavalry to hunt them, and then send in slower, more effective troops to kill him

Thanks Katank,

I've not played that many games, but it seems to me that Light Cav are more likely to capture someone than say R Knights.

I'm a touch confused. Serpent said that enemy that run from the battlefield are automatically captured. Is this right?

I was under the impression you needed to run them over with Cavalry etc in order to take prisoners.

I'm in the middle of fighting the Golden Hoard in GA/Normal/Egypt and the answer to this would really help me out.

cheers

Sorry...No talent

You have to run them down ...unless they do not have place to go. Like castle or friendly province.

All units that are running from battlefield will be captured.

I meant this in a sense that you run over them... But if they change their mind about running and attack they will be killed.
