View Full Version : racist factions in Total War?
just wondering if factions in Total War are racist cuz ever since playing as the Almohads i've never ever ever been able to get a white girl princess to marry into my Muslim family.
are those factions racist, or what's the deal? i don't know exactly how many times i've offered but it certainly was A LOT over the weeks and not once did i ever get one yes

the comp hardly ever says yes regardless of what faction you are...
You have to think of medieval times no ruling heirarchy of that time would marry into another religion and besides that even thought its not programmed into the game I could just see the pope being very displeased and that nation would be very succeptible to an excommunication for an action of such a matter. I've did a little bit of experiment during one of my games and if you are a catholic faction a muslim has no problem accepting a marriage whats another wife to them anyways. If your Muslim it is rare but lots of begging with an emmisary will get you a marriage but is much easier if you are going after the same religion

It never happened to me either but I think it´s good. I mean there´s a holy war going on, right? It would be one of the most unlikely turn outs of the game if you could achive this. Although I don´t think it´s possible.

Would you send your daughter to join a harem?
No, I think the earlier post is exactly correct. People in the Middle Ages were too religious to marry their daughters to a different religion. The computer allows some weddings between Catholic and Orthodox Christians, but that's about it.

It has to do with your monarch's influence. Increase it and you will find brides easier. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
The shortest way of increasing influence is winning battles. Conquering lands is even better. Following a stable building program (gaining great builder etc.) does increase influence as well.

Hey Mouz can you give us a little history behind your sigs ? I recognize the sword, it's the sword of Mohammed ?
mouz, I find that with more lands, the comp hates me for being successful and thus rejects my offers quite often.

Yeah, the greater you are, the more you are hated. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Sinan and others interested,
The vertical flag on the left side of my sig is a colour-altered remake of the war standard of Hayreddin Barbarossa (http://www.piratescrossroads.com/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=238). One of these days (or years http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif) I'll restore its original nefti colour.
The line on the top is from the Qur'an.
On the four corners are written the names of the first four apostles of the Prophet, within crescents.
The sword was the Prophet's, but he presented it to his apostle, Ali, and it was renowned as his: the Zulfikar. The handle is a hand symbol, representing the home folks of the Prophet.
The six armed star is the tricky one. It is named the seal of Suleyman (Solomon) instead of David's star in Islamic art, and is widely used as a symbol of power and sovereignity.

Basically its the Christians vs Islam at this point in history...
They all hate you if your playing Muslim.
Historically Emperor Alexius in Byzantium called for help from the rest of Christendom against the Turks, which started the whole avalanche of the Crusades.
It is a world of religious extremes and while the Catholic West did really dislike the Orthadox religion they can still find common ground with them from time to time as they are at least Christians... Historically they did intermarry with the rest of Catholic Europe.
The Harem was often made up of non-muslim Women anyway, I think mainly because the Koran doesn't allow Muslim women to be held in a Harem.
As a christian faction, I did once manage to marry one of of my princesses to the Turks though.
Its also the case that Muslim factions do not need heiresses as their leaders marry automatically; byt and large they are just not concerned with the issue.

I have lucky in that once i married a daughter with a Muslim faction to make a stronger back to back alliance, and vice versa , is about the way of respect i think if your international importance is great you have more changes to married with strong houses .

You're most welcome.
Correction:
I said first four apostles; it should have been first four khalifes (still apostles but only two of them are firsts of their kinds [male adult, child]).

I quite often marry off Byzantine princesses to Almohad Khalifa.
I have never found it a problem to do so.
The Patriarch of Constantinople, while grumbilng, recognises the necessity...

People in this time period did not really care about skin color. Hatred was based almost completely on religion, ie Christian vs. Muslim. Like an above poster said, no Christian monarch would ever marry his daughter to an infidel Muslim, he would be very unpopular with his people, the Church, his other children etc.
Historically, if I am not mistaken, Richard the Lionheart wanted to marry his sister to Saladin's brother but she refused because of the religious differences and general hatred toward Saracens (again, due to their religion and the perception she had about them).
As far as the game is concerned, I know not if the programmers purposely made it more difficult for Muslim princes to marry Christian princeses, but like another poster said, The influence of your king makes all the difference. I had my Turkish Sultan get numerous marrigae offers after boosting his influence.
Also, I would add that Muslim princes had a lot of women to choose from and I don't think they used marriage as a political weapon like Europeans tended to do.
For those that care to read, there is my two cents.
Thank You.
