with what effect? morale boost? depending on? oratory skills? nay, too much in my opinion. just give a bonus for studying oratory and this is it.

I doubt it will give any sort of morale bonus, I think it's just a little feature to add some atmosphere to the before battle stage. It also says it's a good way to pick up tactics; maybe old Hannibal has a few tricks planned out and is hoping that flying cursor in the sky sits down to listen http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

MikeB. over at the .COM (I think he posts as Captain Fishpants here) posted the following on speeches;
"Scripting the general's speeches was an interesting exercise. The system takes account of the overall battle situation, the troop mix, the enemy, any allies, and other factors in creating a speech for the general to deliver to his men before the battle. Let's just say that for the big battles, it's worth listening to the speech as it might just give you a hint or two about how the battle could be won.
There is also a chance that the General's personality will also shine through. I could tell you what VnVs have an effect on battle speeches, but that would only spoil the surprises in store."
So, I agree w/ Monk here - it's a cool little feature.

This does sound like a really cool feature and one that will no doubt improve the game's atmosphere and assist many a newbie in winning battles.
However, I sincerely hope CA has alotted as many resources into improving and tweaking RTW's strategic and tactical AI as they have in making RTW as user-friendly as possible. When you consider that RTW was delayed primarily because of the game's lack of tutorials and newbie appeal CA has certainly had enough time to work on the AI as well. I've seen some really wacky and foolish behavior from the strategic and tactical AI in Medieval so I am desperately hoping that when it comes to RTW such things are left in the past.
A strong AI opponent is near the top of my wish list for RTW.
