My biggest fear for RTW is the 4v4 games what kind of pcs will u need to run a 4v4? thats 8 players all with super pcs Looks like 4v4 may become a relic of the past

a 800mhz computer with old gfx card can run 4000 units ok acording to the last Magazine i read.
realisticly you cant complain about games moving on.... we cant sit back and stick with STW or Quake 2 graphics becuase some people cant upgrade.
besides, a 2 gig processor and a decent video card plus a gig of ram is very affordable now days.
I think her concern goes beyond a 2 gig processor, K_Y.

I think shes talking about who could host a 4v4 game, becuase hosting it is another story from joining a 4v4 game,it takes a lot of power for that and requires a damn good connection to support the other 7 players on your computer, after all the game is running on your comp not theirs.

Yes my system at the moment is a 2.2 athalon 512mb gf2pro(poo) ill be getting a radeon 9800 pro or xt b4 rome comes out but i worry for all the other players i the foyer are we just going to haave to host games with peeps we know that have pcs that will handle the game? No one is telling me that at 1000 processor is going to handle 4v4 i just wont accept that Also the devs said in a post somewhere on the org you would need an 8mb buffer in your hard drive if anyone could locate that post id be most grateful

Hello Swoosh,
It's here http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin....d+cache (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=19;t=13293;hl=8+and+mb+and+cache)
The MTW network code is faster in my experience than STW's. There are some other changes and MTW is more demanding than STW (a 4v4 custom isn't that smooth on my Pentium4 2.6). STW and MTW are more or less the same though: 3D battlefield and 2D units.
Modern graphic cards release some stress fron the CPU by handling the graphics with their GPU. 2D sprites are done by the CPU iirc. So, there will be some gain and some loss (all/most graphics handled by GPU instead of CPU but more work because of AI etc.).
I'ld wait with hardware upgrades for RTW. There will be cheaper, better and faster products available once RTW hits the shelves, and your new 9800pro may be the so so instead of the rocking part. Better save some pennies and decide what you really need when RTW is out.
That's true faisal and running a custom 4v4 is even more demanding (full AI).

I'm sure that the developers would not want to tech themselves out of their market. Thus a 'good' machine should do nicely. I myself am not cash-flow strapped so will upgrade as soon as its out. Ill wait untill then though as theirs no point in doing so till its out. If Swoosh's worse case scenario turns out to be true though, that will hurt multi.

Yes lahll but remember if most comps can do single player the devs wont see it as teching themselves out of the market. As has been said many times multiplayer is a tiny percentage of that market.

But Rome is more or less quake 2 graphics http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif -- just with tens of thousands of guys on screen simultaneously http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif
Me & my 1.8ghz athlon + 1gig ram + 9800np are looking forward to it indeed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-builder.gif especially after seeing how it copes with Farcry http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-glasses2.gif (mind you, performance in shader heavy game = performance in vast dx7 game)
eh? Im guessing you mean Far Cry when you talk about shaders here, but DX7? Rome isn't directx7, most certainly not. Even Medieval was 8.1 :)
Besides some handy little features of DX9 means you can instruct it not to render off screen and hidden images without having to make it part of the games actual graphics engine. pretty handy feature for a game such as RTW.
