armour vs. defense rating

Question,

Does the armour rating of a unit effect melee combat at all, or only the defense rating?

I looked in the official strategy guide, but see no reference to the armour rating.

From what i can gather, armour effects the ability to withstand missile fire, and the defense rating is used for melee. Is this correct?

Additionally, do armor upgrades add to defense as well as to the armor rating?

Yes the armour rating is only for missile defense while defense value is for melee defense.

An armour upgrade add +1 to armour as well as defense.
